Advice for Seekers

advice-for-seekersAdvice for Seekers
Written by Charles H. Spurgeon
Published at Attic Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing

About the book

Many people get lost in their faith walk by using the map of their own understanding rather than the guidance of God. Spurgeon, one of Christianity’s most enduring influences, helps set the seeker on the path of peace. In his classic work, Advice for Seekers, Spurgeon offers Scriptural truths to help remove the obstacles so the simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can be grasped.

From his own experiences and his years of ministry, C.H. Spurgeon shares a gentle spirit of grace through his words to comfort and encourage those desiring to know the Lord.

Chapters inside this exquisite reproduction of a late 1890’s classic work include:

  • Do not Try to Save Yourself
  • Despised Ones Seeking Jesus
  • Seekers Touching Christ
  • Still no Light and Why?
  • and 9 more

Apart from Biblical writers, Spurgeon is considered to be history’s most widely read preacher. Called the “prince of preachers,” he is said to have preached the gospel to over ten million people in his lifetime.

My Thoughts

I always wanted to read the writing of past Christian leaders and getting this little book from Charles H. Spurgeon opened my interest in discovering more wisdom from the past.   First and foremost, I need to inform my reader that this little gem of a book is written in what I consider older English so for this French Canadian it was a bit difficult to read but the message is very inspiring and clear.    I think that everyone who are Christian ought to read Advice for Seekers – even if you have been a Christians for 16 years as I have.    It will give your mind a new perspective of the Gospel message.  Most of us are used to listening our pastor on a weekly basis but sometimes I find that the message is not preached as it used to be back in the days of Spurgeon and others renowned pastors.

Who was Charles Spurgeon?

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born in June 1834 and died in January 1892.   He was a British particular Baptist preacher.  He is also known as the “Prince of Preachers”.  In his lifetime, he apparently preached to around 10,000,000 people often at numerous places each week.    He was also a prolific author of many works including sermons, autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns, and more.

The book Advice for Seekers provide insights on how Spurgeon concluded that what stand in our way to move forward and grow in our faith is us.   This book contains a collection of sermons preached to encourage people to remove the barriers that hinder our grow as Christians and trust our Savior completely with everything in our life.

I sincerely think that this book is not only for seekers looking for God but for everyone who wants to grow in their faith and want to move forward in complete trust with God.    I have gleaned precious insights from it while reading it and think that even though it’s written in old English, that I would want my kids to read it when they come in age to understand it more (high school).

Please watch this little presentation of the book.

Advice for Seekers is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

My Thoughts

This small little book is a gem in itself as it recall the life of one of the greatest inspiring Christian.   John Newton wasn’t always a Christian.   He had to learn the hard way and when he finally cried out to God to be saved, he realized the importance of living for Him.    His story is amazing and will help you understand the powerful words behind the hymn that everyone knows – Amazing Grace – which is sang in every churches throughout the world.

See this little video about the book.

The book is easy to bring with you to read on the bus or while waiting for an appointment.  It has the feel of an old book and contains some black and white drawings illustrating the life of John Newton.

Reading his story, opened up my eyes on the world of slavery back in the days.  Now I know that still today there are slavery and I pray that one day this will not exist anymore.

This book could be a great reading assignment for high school student along with a paper to write on the life of John Newton.    I love learning more about people from the past especially about someone who has become an important example of the Christian faith like John Newton.

If you want to learn more about John Newton and the slavery market from back then, this book will provide insights for you about the history of slavery as well as on the life of a great man.
