Praying Through Your Adoption

5256213Praying Through Your Adoption – A Complete guide to Creating and Nurturing Today’s Forever Family
Written by Michele Cervone Scott
Published at WinePress Publishing

An Interview with Michele Cervone Scott

What can you tell us about yourself, your childhood, and the present?

I grew up as an only child in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Faith was a vital part of our family life, so I believed in God from an early age. About mid-way through college, after heartaches and some poor decisions, I decided to trust Jesus and the plans He has for my life. I graduated, moved to the suburbs, and married my husband, Eric. I worked in the corporate world and Christian ministry before becoming a work-at-home mom through adoption.

When did you first realize you wanted to become a writer?

I started writing poems and stories for fun as a child. I even had a poem published in Highlights for Children. Through high school and college I enjoyed researching and writing papers, but I never considered becoming a professional writer until I wrote Praying Through Your Adoption.

What inspired you to write Praying Through Your Adoption?

I've been talking to God in prayer for as long as I can remember. I turned to prayer during our infertility, and I had planned to pray through a pregnancy if that had been God's plan. While adopting our son from Russia, we experienced painful delays and obstacles, such as increased fees and additional paperwork. At a particularly low point in the adoption process, I participated in an online prayer vigil that directed me to pray for very specific aspects of adoption – from government officials to waiting children. I realized the power of prayer specifically in adoption and saw the need to help other families pray through their adoptions as well.

How did you come up with the title?

Becoming an adoptive family is a process. First, you make decisions about the type of adoption and the age of the child you wish to pursue. Then you work to become approved, educated, and prepared for welcoming and parenting this new child. Praying Through Your Adoption shows families how to rely on God and their faith through the entire journey of creating and nurturing their forever family.

What other life experiences shaped you to write this book?

Wow, many life experiences influenced this book. Our infertility is probably the biggest since the longing and waiting for our son is a large portion of our story. But even getting laid-off right before our adoption, experiencing post-adoption depression, and dealing with special needs made me want to encourage others dealing with similar difficulties.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Retelling my experience with post-adoption depression was hard. After our difficult time becoming parents, I never imagined I'd feel overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed as a new mom. As much as I wanted to skip over that chapter in my life and in the book, I felt it was important to paint a realistic picture for prospective adoptive families. Thankfully, other adoptive families were willing to share their real-life joys and challenges in the book as well.

What's one of the most important things people need to know about adoption?

One of my favorite quotes in the book is from the late Derek Loux, an adoptive father of and an advocate for orphans. He said,

“My friends, adoption is redemption. It's costly, exhausting, expensive, and outrageous. Buying back lives costs so much. When God set out to redeem us, it killed Him. And when He redeems us, we can't even really appreciate or comprehend it.”

Derek's words capture so much. There is loss, and, yes, there are sacrifices – financial and otherwise – in adoption. But the rewards for answering God's call to care for orphans are priceless.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

In writing the book, I had the opportunity to feature around 20 families and their unique adoption stories. No matter the circumstances, I could see the special love that ordinary families experience as forever families. I'm grateful for their transparency and support for this project, and I think the readers will be, too.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

With over 143 million orphans across the globe, I would love to see more families consider adoption. But I deeply respect the person who reads this interview or picks up this book and, for whatever reason, decides adoption is not right for them. I hope they would at least consider providing prayer support and perhaps even financial support to families pursuing adoption.

Where can readers learn more about you and adoption?

I encourage readers to visit www.PrayLoveAdopt.com, a website I created to provide information, encouragement, and prayer support for families in any stage of the adoption journey. Visitors can read an excerpt from Praying Through Your Adoption and order a paperback or e-book copy if they desire. They can also visit my blog, www.MommyForward.com, and my main website, www.MicheleCScott.com to learn more about me and my other projects.

My Thoughts

This book is interesting for couples considering adoption – whether through Child Aid Society, private adoption or international adoption.    It will cover every aspects of an adoption from the consideration of it to parenting the child once he/she is included in your family.  Each chapter will give you guideline on how you can pray for your adoption – or for a family member’s adoption process.    The chapters covers considering adoption. financing, interceding for the future child, for the birth parents, for others involved in the process and against spiritual warfare.   It will give you guidelines on what to pray when you are waiting, when you advance in the process, when adjustment is needed and for support needed.

The author is also mentioning key verses helpful in your praying time as well as incorporate family stories throughout the book.

Praying Through Your Adoption is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.

Disclosure:  I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for posting the author’s interview on my blog.  This blog tour is managed by Christian Speaker Services.

Captain America Toys

hasbro_2009ca-corner-top

imageJuly 22nd as come and gone already but on that particular day the official release of the Movie Captain America hit the theaters around North America.

Some of you might not know who Captain America is….  Most comic collectors, however, won’t hesitate to give you a bit of information on this fictional character from Marvel Comics.  His real name is Steve Rogers and he was enhanced to become the super hero wearing a costume resembling the America flag and armed with an indestructible shield.

He fights various enemies but his main one is definitively the Red Skull.

To celebrate the new movie, Hasbro Canada has a variety of fun toys that you boy will more than likely enjoy.

My boys have seen these while I was watching videos of the NY Toy Fair earlier this spring.   I had not received my package from Hasbro yet.   I knew what was coming though so I kept an eye open on their reaction…   My 5 and 7 years old were super excited to see the disc launching shield and the mask.    They also had bright eyes when they saw the various action figures.    I knew that what I will receive from Hasbro will hit a spot.

Being comic collectors, we have a tendency to be attracted by anything comic related – movies, posters, stick-ons for walls, t-shirts and so on.    Since the Free Comic Book Day, the boys have started their own comic collection.   I pray and hope that their wives will enjoy this hobby as much if not more than themselves.    I don’t mind comics – in fact I have read more than my own husband (a young guy even told him he married the perfect woman once).   And every time a new movie comes out, we are generally going to see it at the movies.  This year however is different…   This is the third movie coming out in about two months and we haven’t seen it yet – neither Thor or Green Lantern for that matter.   *Sigh*   I am looking forward for my oldest son to go through his babysitting course tomorrow and we shall have a babysitter in the house…

So Captain America’s movie is out there and apparently it is doing well.   Hasbro Canada has a variety of toy related to the movie and the character that any boy will love.  I have received three fabulous products to review.

355936955056900B10331C66D2F211CFCAPTAIN AMERICA Disc Launching Shield

Built especially for the Allies’ own super soldier, this indestructible shield became a symbol of strength for people around the world. In the hands of Captain America, it is a powerful weapon. Now you’ve got the chance to wield the shield of the most skilled fighter in the world!

Make crime-fighting action “come alive” with this Disc Launching Shield. When enemies appear and it’s up to you to defeat them, wield your shield to protect yourself from their advances. Just when they think they’ve got you cornered, use your shield to launch your five discs up to 20 feet to take out their forces! With your power and this shield, there’s just no stopping you!

My Thoughts

Ahhh…. A shield that shoot discs.   We have a few of these things around the house – mostly fast food restaurants toys!   Still anything that shoots something is a BIG attraction for boys I find.    I do have rules in our house though – not in the living room and not in the dining room.   So mostly, they would do that in their room or in the basement.  There is always outside but if you don’t see where the disc has gone – it will be gone for quite some time if you don’t find it.

The shield can launch discs up to six meters of distance.   The shield is made of sturdy plastic that will sustain the roughness of play of boys.   The child can hold it easily in his hands and shoot the discs to take a target down.   I am thinking that my boys will like to try this one with some cans stacked as a tower.  Beware that 4 AA batteries are needed to enjoy the shield.  These are not included in the package.

35596D655056900B1085A4D3B95F6589

CAPTAIN AMERICA Hero Mask

Make super hero action “come alive” with this awesome Captain America Hero Mask. When villains rear their ugly heads and you’ve got to save the day, put on your mask to feel just like your favorite hero! With details that make this mask seem just like the real thing, you’ll want to wear it all the time — or until your evil enemies are defeated!

My Thoughts

This is definitively the perfect item to pretend play as Captain America.   I almost wished I have some sort of America Flag costume to make it more real.  But a simple blue turtleneck will do.   If you get the Disc Launching Shield as well, your child can have an instantaneous Halloween costume this year.  And if you have more than one boy, you could create your own Avengers team with a Thor and Iron Man costume…   The mask is made of plastic and is quite comfortable to be honest.   It would stay properly on the head of any kid with the use of the velcro.

Make believe items have gone a long way since I was a child.   I am quite impressed with the quality of the mask as well as the design.   The part that goes around the eyes is soft and comfortable.  It won’t bug your boy when he will wear it for a long period of time.

45158DEA5056900B105B155DC620E331Hero Power CAPTAIN AMERICA

When young Steve Rogers became Captain America, he gained amazing, acrobatic combat abilities. With his indestructible shield strapped to his arm, he charges into battle against his foes!

Your electronic Captain America figure is ready to take on whatever evil forces come his way! When villains approach, activate his lights, battle sounds and phrases including, “Let’s take them down!” His shining shield star and glowing grapple launcher give the bad guys just a taste of what they’re in for. Attach his shield to his back, and then launch his grappling hook to grab his enemies and bring them right where he wants them. Even when you’re surrounded, you and your Captain America figure can battle your way to victory!

My Thoughts

This is the ultimate action figure for any little boy.   It is about the size of a Barbie doll and had lights and sounds coming out of him.   Press on the star on his chest to hear him talk and fight.  Some people might not be impressed with this toy simply because you hear fighting sounds.  But honestly knowing the character and how he fights villains, I have no problem with it.   The sound is also accompanied by light coming out of the shield.    The action figure also has a gun and a shooting tool that launch an hook.    The shield can be placed either on his arm or his back.  My son Jérémy will more than likely enjoy this action figure because he will be able to play with his little sister when she takes her dolls out.    He can become the defender of her dolls while they play together.

So what do you think of the new toys based on the Captain America movie?  Pretty impressive isn’t it?  Each of these Captain America toy (and other ones as well) is available at your favourite toy store.

GREAT NEWS!

So Good Beverages

imageRecently I was contacted to see if I would be interested in reviewing the So Good Soy Milk Beverages.   I agreed even though we don’t have anyone in our family who has milk intolerance at this point in time.   When my daughter was younger she had some intolerance to regular formula and milk at one point.   We had to buy some soy beverage for her.  I figure that exploring new taste and discovering new products would help us to expand our taste buds.

The So Good products are produced by Earth’s Own Food Company.  Earth's Own Food Company is a Canadian company who is the #1 non-dairy beverage company in the country. Our recipe for success is fostering wellbeing in everything we do and making healthy products that are good for consumers, their families, the community and the planet. Earth's Own Food Company has 205 employees who are passionate and committed to the company's vision and continued growth.  Earth's Own Food Company's vision is to be a pioneering healthy food & beverage company, one that takes an ethical approach to championing nutritional innovation & high quality products and services in order to actively improve people's lives and well-being.

So Good is made from non-genetically modified soy protein by Identity Preservation. What this means is that a monitoring system has been put in place which controls each step of the manufacturing process -- from seed selection to planting and harvesting, transportation and processing -- to ensure no genetically modified soybeans enter the supply stream at any time.

So Good is 100% lactose free and a perfect alternative to milk. Lactose is the natural sugar found in dairy milk and lactase is the enzyme required to break down the lactose. Some people have little or no lactase in their body which means dairy milk and dairy milk products cannot be digested. The common symptoms of lactose intolerance are stomach pains, bloating, gas, diarrhea and nausea.    So Good is also 100% free of cholesterol and low in saturated fat. Vegetable oil is added to Original and Flavour varieties of So Good to provide appropriate fat levels for satisfying mouth feel and beverage smoothness (100% cholesterol free polyunsaturated sunflower oil or Canola oil is used).   The product is 100% free of animal products and suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets as well as 100% gluten-free and are suitable for people with Celiac Disease.   So Good is a participant in Health CheckTM - a food information program developed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.  So Good has factories on both the east and west coast of Canada, reducing its distance to market (unlike Silk soymilk, which is shipped up from the US).

imageI have receive coupons that I could exchange for the full product at the grocery store.   So far we tried the Strawberry and Chocolate flavours.

I have to admit that the So Good Strawberry didn’t win some fans in our household.   I would have thought that my kids would have liked it.   My daughter herself, age 3, has picked it because it was pink.    But somehow the taste didn’t stick with them.    Personally I thought I was drinking a milk made of imagechalk.    You could taste a bit of strawberry in it but not enough to remove the taste of the soy behind it.   I guess that with time the kids might get used to it…  if needed be that is.

So I didn’t know how the So Good Chocolate would be received when I open the container.

Well surprisingly the kids and I LOVED it (my husband doesn’t drink or eat anything chocolate except if it would be white chocolate!).    The taste of chocolate was rich and when you were done with it you just wanted more of it.    We drank this one in a record time (compared to the strawberry flavor that is…).  My sweet Jasmine kept asking for more even though there wasn’t any more as the container was…. empty!

I do have two other vouchers for So Good products.   I am looking for a Vanilla (requested by my husband) and a Chocolate one.  But somehow, the stores I went too didn’t have any in stock…   I did three stores yesterday and none had them – Wal-Mart (almost empty shelves), Metro and Shoppers Drug Mart.   Mmmm!   I still have to go check at Loblaws as well as Independent but haven’t had the time yet.  UPDATE:  This morning I went to a Loblaws who had the Chocolate and Vanilla Omega version.  These found their way to our house…   Looking forward to discover the Vanilla flavour but I will wait until my husband is back from his Daddy day with our 5 years old son!

All So Good products are made of natural flavours, are an excellent source of nutrition, contain calcium, are low in saturated fat and are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals!   And it is perfect for people who can’t drink milk because of issues like being lactose intolerant.

GREAT NEWS!

One of my readers will win 50$ worth of vouchers for So Good Products.

As a first entry, tell me which recipe you would like to do with a So Good product.  Include the link to that recipe from their website.

Waterproof Bible

Waterproof Bible

Bardin & Marsee Publishing

One July day I received a message from an online Christian store about Bibles.    We have many of them in our house but one particular one grabbed my attention – the Waterproof Bible.   What?   They can’t be serious…

Well I looked into it and yes there is such a thing as a waterproof Bible out there.    A Bible that you can bring and not worry about getting water on it.  A Bible who is stain resistant, that won’t bleed thru if you write or underline, in which you can use dry highlighters in it and where the pages are extremely durable.

The durability of the Waterproof Bible gives you the freedom to take God's Word with you anywhere - lounging, traveling, exercising... with worry free confidence that your Bible will withstand the test of time.

The Waterproof Bible is 100% tree-free and made entirely from synthetic materials giving it the potential for extreme longevity. Yes, the Waterproof Bible can be recycled or, better yet, you can use it for a lifetime! Our creation care starts with the Bibles we make and continues to our everyday company lifestyle. Many of the daily trips, errands or deliveries, we make around town are done on our cargo bike. We make a conscience effort to recycle all that we can in our homes and at the office.

How this Bible came to exist?

image

Three friends and many Bibles later -
We excitedly introduce the Waterproof Bible and THE OUTDOOR BIBLE!

The Waterproof Bible and THE OUTDOOR BIBLE originate from our desire to take God's word into all of His creation, regardless of the weather or circumstances. That is why they are completely waterproof and lightweight, dry quickly, are much stronger than paper, and adapts well to all extremes or reading environments (on a rainy campout, in a coffee shop, even in a hot tub. Just as a frog lives on land and in water, the Waterproof Bible and THE OUTDOOR BIBLE thrive in any situation or climate.

Wherever life takes you - carry the Waterproof Bible or THE OUTDOOR BIBLE and Be Inspired. Anywhere.

Your Friends,
Michael, Bobby and Anna

More from Michael:

The winter of 1996-97 was a big snow years for America's number one ski resort in Vail Colorado. It was, however, my first year to lead mountaintop worship services with Alpine Resort Ministry. I remember trying to read Scripture on those snowy Sundays while huge snowflakes melted onto the pages. "If only this was waterproof," I thought to myself.

During autumn of 1999 while backpacking in Smoky Mountain National Park I set off for a day hike early one morning. After the most beautiful day spent watching a blanket of mist rise from the mountains and listening to the comforting sounds of leaves falling from the trees onto the ground, I headed back to my camp. Upon arriving, I found my Bible more wrinkled with moisture than my skin after 2 hours in a hot tub. "Why can't it just be waterproof" I thought.

The summer of 2001 was the first time I have ever lived in a house with a swimming pool. I was so excited to spend time in the pool soaking up some rays and planning out the schedule for the summer camp I was directing. It was such a good idea at the time... I could float in the middle of the pool, shades on, and Bible in hand. As long as I could stay calm and move slowly, I should have had no worries. In the middle of adjusting my position on the float, my Bible started to slide off of my belly. As I started to grab my Bible, I remembered that my hands were dripping wet! "Waterproof Bible, Anyone!"

More from Bobby and Anna:

As a believer in Christ and one that has always loved to be in God's creation exposed to the elements, I have often desired to have my Bible by my side for reading here and there. My exploring has led me to mountain tops, river banks, sandy beaches, misty valleys, and hot springs, and has caused me to become soaked to the core while backpacking or paddling. I hate to admit that my Bible has not made it with me on many of these occasions for the sake of protecting it and because I don't trust a plastic bag not to puncture. Michael and I have been talking about how awesome it would be to have a waterproof Bible for many years now, and we have finally decided to produce it ourselves. Now we can put an end to all the worrying that we have done in the past about our Bibles and take God's Word wherever our adventures lead.

To make this happen, Michael, Anna (my wife), and I have formed Bardin & Marsee Publishing, LLC to produce the world's first waterproof, rugged, and tear resistant Bibles. We hope that you find heaps of enjoyment reading God's Word in all weather environments.

Wishing You Happy Trails and God's Guidance,

My Thoughts

From the day I received this Bible I was amazed by the thickness of the pages.   Recently, it has been announced that the paper money in Canada will change once again and will be so strong that you could wash it.   So having this Bible in my hands made me think of how things have changed through the year…  I remember sitting in a water chair in our pool when I was – oh I don’t know 18 years old approximately – and reading Shoeless Joe.  A bug came around and I wanted to shoo it away.   Unfortunately, my book went flying and ended up in the water.   You have never seen a girl get out of a water chair that fast to try to recuperate the book…   The book was went and once dried all wavy.   I still have it by the way.

Because of this little adventure, I was always hesitant to bring a Bible with me close a body of water…   So imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered that a waterproof Bible existed.

But those of you who know me, also know that I would test it… thoroughly.

So this morning I proceeded to do a crazy test.  Here’s what my facebook status said:

I did something totally crazy this morning - I soaked my Bible in the kitchen sink. And you know what? It is not damaged whatsoever! How I did it? I'll let you know in an upcoming blog post....

I had also included a picture from the Bible under water.

IMG_8524

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there I no water. PSALM 63:1

I think I grabbed some interest as someone said I had a great teaser and another friend said I was very sneaky!

Still I have proof that I did the testing….  I don’t have a pool and I wasn’t at the beach so I used my kitchen sink.  See for yourself.

IMG_8526

IMG_8523

I opened the Bible – that’s also when I took the close up picture above.

After a few minutes and the kids staring at the Bible, I took it out of the water.   Water pearled over it and on the side of it.

IMG_8528 IMG_8529

My son, Alexandre – age 10, touched the pages when I took it out of the water and he was impressed to see that the pages were not wet.

Scrabble FLASH

E3B4E4535056900B10781AE566B1E36DScrabble FLASH
By Hasbro Canada

About the game

How many words can you make with these letters?

Got a minute? That's about all you need to play this addictive, fast-paced version of SCRABBLE. Just line up the letter tiles, then shuffle and slide them to find words fast and beat the clock!

My Thoughts

This game is perfect to bring at camping, on a plane, on a retreat or any other place where you want to stretch your brain cells.

I will be honest with you.   I have seen this in the store since last Fall and it didn’t attract me at first.  But as the months went by I kept seeing the package.  One day I picked it up and read more about it.   I liked what I read and asked Hasbro to see if I could review it.   They agreed and send me one.   I didn’t know what to expect from it and I am pleasantly surprised.   I enjoy it quite a bit to be honest and love the fact that it is small enough that I can carry it anywhere I want.

The content is simple – you get five electronic letter tiles in a storage box.   Three games are included in Scrabble FLASH.C1B4CA795056900B10296F0932328D12

Game 1 will permit you to find as many words you can with the tiles.  You can do words containing 3, 4 or 5 letters.   When the time is up you will get you score as well as the maximum words possible you could have done.

Game 2 will challenge you to find as many 5 letter words as possible.  Once you have one word found, the letters will change and you have to find a new word.

Game 3 is similar to game 2 but it can be played with multiple players.

Each game can also be player with 4 letter tiles instead of the five.  Talk about challenging especially if English is your second language…  *grin*

To play any of these games, you will need to be fast.   But with practice you become faster.    My son, who is 10 years old, “stole” my Scrabble Flash one day and was playing with it.   I am pleased to see him being interested in word games.  I find word games will help him (and his siblings) to be stretch their knowledge and discover new words sometimes.

This game is particularly interesting for homeschoolers as it will help your child – and you as well – to play with letters to find as much words as possible.    A perfect game to take a break from the school hours and still learn at the same time!

Pssst!   I have since discovered that two other FLASH games will be coming out later this year – SIMON and YATZEE.    They look amazing if you ask me from what I have seen on a video.    I am looking forward to discover those as well.
Scrabble FLASH is available at your favourite toy store.
