Privacy and Social Media

As part of my course Developing a Social Media Strategy, I have to write a post that incorporates and connect to an article I have recently read or something current I’ve seen in the news.

One day about two weeks ago, my husband emailed me an article that he had read on ctv.caGrown-up Facebook users similar to young people: study .   After reading the article, I thought it was an interesting subject for my course.

Apparently adults are not much better than teenagers to protect their privacy while on social networks.   Ah!   Really?     I could have told you that without going through a study just by the things I read sometimes….

Nevertheless, I think that having a study on the subject will make people realize about the kind of information they put on facebook and other social networks.

According to the article, one of the authors of the study says

You should treat anything that you post on facebook like you’re posting on the front page of a newspaper, so you want to be comfortable that you’d be OK with your employer seeing that, your family member seeing that friends, children,…

As I read these words, it reminded me how sometimes I have read some posts on facebook that got me wondering why in the world someone would put that up.   Honestly, I must admit that it drove me mad at times because somehow it affected me quite a bit – like becoming mad of the people and judging them.   I quickly realized that I was not on a good path and this was affecting me more than I would have thought.    I took some steps to reduce the amount of reading from some people.

Did you know that nowadays numerous employers will check out your facebook page before proceeding to hiring you?    And that if you don’t get a job, it could be because of something you had posted on facebook?   Unfortunately, if this is the case, you are more than likely never know about it as the potential employers will not divulge the information.

The study has compared the habits of two groups – a young one composed of young people ages nine to eighteen (288 facebook users) and an older one where the ages were ranging from nineteen to seventy-one (285 facebook users).

According to the research, the younger users would be more likely to reveal more information simply because they are spending more time on the social networks.  However, whether the younger generation is not as foolish as we first thought or that the older generation are more foolish concerning the protection of their privacy the study has not revealed this.   Generally speaking

there is this belief that younger people, especially teenagers, are somewhat foolish when it comes to privacy and social media, and as people get more mature, older, they become more careful and more protective of their privacy.

However, the study has identified a trend that the younger generation would be more likely to do – ‘friend collecting’ which is simply to add people they do not like or do not know personally.

After reading this article, my first reaction was that I wasn’t surprised by the results.    I tend to agree that people should be more careful about the kind of information they post on facebook or other social networks.  In 2011, I have already a number of friends who had some sort of virus that has spread on their friends on facebook as well as been hacked (not by family members).

I personally am somewhat protective on the kind of information I would put on my tag line on facebook.    I try not too vent too much to the whole world when something is not going well or if someone if frustrating me.   Oh I am tempted at times… but I remind myself that it is not a proper behavior and that in the end it could cause more problems than anything else.    It is like pouring fuel on a fire – close your eyes and picture a fire to which you add some gasoline in it… what would happen?  Exactly – an out of control fire.

Complaining and posting your own frustration on facebook can have a similar effect on a relationship – it can get out of control…

So be wise.  Think twice before posting.    Is it necessary?  Is it putting someone down?   Is it adequate?   Is it out of taste?

Same goes with pictures, videos, comments and so on.

Always think about the consequences before acting.

To come back on the study for one last time, I was surprised to see that kids as young as nine years old were included.    Honestly it is beyond me to understand why parents would allow their kids of that age to use social networks.   Honestly, I am reticent to let my own ten years old boy to navigate these sites just yet.    I don’t think he has the maturity to make wise decisions while using them.    Maybe I am ‘old school’ for that matter – yes coming from someone who has a master degree in Information Technology.   But I want to protect him and his siblings as much as possible against damages that could affect their whole life in the future.

In the meantime, I am planning to become wiser while using social network and be very careful of the kind of information I will post.

What do you think about the article?   How do you protect yourself while being on facebook?   Are you careful about the type of information you post?

Removing heat stains from a wooden table.

My husband’s cousin made jam today and discover after the job was done that she had a heat stain on her wooden table.

263658_10150241068447252_517672251_7735913_4537599_n

So she put a damp cloth over it…

270860_10150241069522252_517672251_7735919_4137288_n

Plug in her iron.

264277_10150241069587252_517672251_7735920_104521_n

Checked a few times to see is the stain was going away… nope…

267444_10150241069667252_517672251_7735921_7485971_n

Continue the “ironing” on the table… and….

268063_10150241069812252_517672251_7735923_1442144_n

VOILĂ€!   The stain is completely gone.

263647_10150241069907252_517672251_7735924_7765663_n

I thought it was ingenious.  Apparently it would work on older stains as well.

Thanks to Jennifer Cambray for allowing me to use her pics that she posted on facebook!

Prayers needed for a case at the Supreme Court

A few weeks ago, I received an email about a prayer request on an upcoming case at the Supreme Court in Canada.

Tomorrow (May 18th) is the date.

Here’s the email.

Dear OCHEC members and leaders,

Earlier this week you received an email from OCHEC forwarding to you press releases about the Supreme Court of Canada case on May 18th regarding the Province of Quebec curriculum, the Ethics and Religious Culture (ERC), addressing the issue of whether parents have the right to choose the kind of education their children will receive, particularly in regard to religious instruction. Basically, the province of Quebec is insisting that its students take a course on Religion and Ethics that teaches all religions are on a par. Thousands of parents have tried to excuse their children from the class, but their request has been refused (the province supplied the school boards with a standard rejection letter). Two parents have fought this and the case will be argued in the Supreme Court. How does that work? On May 18 the nine Justices of the Court will hear both sides of the case presented (certain Christian organizations, including CCCC and EFC, are among the interveners) and then they will decide if it is the parents or the province who are able to decide what their children should learn in this case.

Why are we sending this out to our Homeschooling community? Because if the SCC decides in favour of the Quebec ministry of education, it will set precedent giving the government the right to choose and insist on the content of curriculum even religious curriculum. This case could be used in the future to decide legislation regarding home education freedoms.

We’ve been asked to circulate a request to join with one support group that is organizing prayer and fasting for the weeks leading up to this case. I’ve attached excerpts of emails from S K who is spear-heading this prayer and fasting movement.

If the Supreme Court of Canada case we referred to is decided in favour of the Quebec school board things related to parental choice of educational material will be non-negotiable. Forever. And it would almost certainly affect homeschooling, eventually: imagine if you could only homeschool if you agreed to a certain curriculum (including books you disagreed with) and your kids were required to be tested on the material....and that was the only homeschooling option. Consider how things have changed from when you were a kid. I remember being read Bible stories, told about John 3:16 and studying The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in my public school, when they still said the Lord's Prayer. None of that would happen now. Gideon Bibles are barely permitted in the Waterloo region schools and the school board is considering further legal action on that issue. What else will be lost over the next 20 years if we do not seek God's face on this? (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Pray! Pray! And please again consider fasting .

Here are a few suggestions for specific prayer:

Pray Proverbs 21:1 "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever He pleases." - that God would direct the hearts of the Justices ("kings") to allow parents, not the government, to decide what children should learn.

They are

The Right Honourable Madam Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, P.C.

The Honourable Mr. Justice William Ian Corneil Binnie The Honourable Mr. Justice Louis LeBel The Honourable Madam Justice Marie Deschamps The Honourable Mr. Justice Morris J. Fish The Honourable Madam Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella The Honourable Madam Justice Louise Charron The Honourable Mr. Justice Marshall Rothstein The Honourable Mr. Justice Thomas Albert Cromwell

Pray for all the people arguing this case on May 18 - for our Christian brothers & sisters intervening in the case, that the Holy Spirit would tell them what to say (Matthew 10:19-20). We are asked to pray for those who persecute us - not sure if the opposing folks would count as persecutors! - but pray that they (and the Justices) would have their hearts turned to Christ.

Above all, whatever happens, pray that God would be glorified.

Please ask yourself: What if you were in the situation of wanting to excuse your child from seeing an objectionable movie in class, BUT YOU COULDN'T. [These things are already happening in public schools in Ontario.] Or, you did not want your child to read a blasphemous book, but you had NO WAY of preventing it - except for your child to get an incomplete credit in that course. Or, you want to send your child to a Christian school, but the Christian school is not allowed to teach Biblical Christianity (Jesus really IS Lord, etc). Or, you are homeschooling but are forbidden to teach about Jesus (or, say, use creationist materials) or just that you are required to have your kids follow certain curricula.

Well, you could say that this doesn't affect you, and it probably wouldn't immediately. But I think it is naive to think that it wouldn't eventually. The underlying issue is WHETHER IT IS YOU OR THE GOVERNMENT WHO SHOULD CHOOSE YOUR CHILDREN'S CURRICULUM.

Lest you think "Oh, that couldn't happen here", please consider the fact that more severe restrictions already exist in western Europe. For example (this is from Wikipedia, accessed today, under "Homeschooling in

Germany"):

"Homeschooling in Germany is illegal with rare exceptions. The requirement to attend school has been upheld, on challenge from parents, by the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. Parents violating the law have primarily or most prominently been Christians seeking a more religious education than that offered by the schools.[1][2] Sanctions against these parents have included fines of thousands of euros, successful legal actions to remove children from the parents' custody, and prison sentences.[1][2] It has been estimated that 600 to 1,000 German children are homeschooled, despite its illegality.[3]”

PLEASE PRAY. OUR GOD ANSWERS PRAYER.

Thanks for reading this far! And feel free to circulate this to anyone you think would be interested.

"As a Father, God finds His greatest pleasure in relieving the wants and granting the desires of His children. Prayer is the child's request, not to the winds, nor to the world, but to the Father...Prayer is the seeking of God’s great and greatest good, which will not come if we do not pray." (E.M.Bounds)

From an HSLDA Canada email I received today.

Right to opt out of anti-Christian course in Québec argued before Supreme Court
In September, 2008, the Province of Québec changed the religious education curriculum, requiring all students from first grade to the end of high school to take a course each year entitled, Ethics and Religious Culture. The course surveys all religions, treating Christianity on par with all other religions. No religion is permitted to be presented as more desirable than any other. The course is mandatory for all public and private schools. Even religiously based private schools are not permitted to teach a religion course contradicting Ethics and Religious Culture.
The Applicants, Lavallée and Jutras, are a married couple with four children. They live in Drummondville, Québec. On behalf of their children, they applied for exemptions from participating in the Ethics and Religious Culture course. Their requests were denied. Several thousand parents living in the Province of Québec also applied for exemptions from the Ethics and Religious Culture course on behalf of their children. All requests were denied. The Minister of Education has, apparently, indicated that all such requests will be denied. School boards have been supplied with a standard form rejection letter for this purpose.
The outcome of this case will potentially impact religious education throughout Canada. Right now even private Christian schools in Quebec are prevented from teaching religion from a purely Christian perspective.
For more on this story please click here and here.

Please join me and many other Canadian homeschoolers in praying for this issue.

Thanks.

Social Media and Barbie & Ken

As I was reading the lesson for the next few weeks in my social media course, it got me pondering on how the social network has been used in the past to promote something. I remembered stumbling on a book last year titled Historical Tweets (http://historicaltweets.com) . They even have a twitter account - http://twitter.com/historicaltweet.

Then suddenly I came onto the news that Barbie and Ken were back together… If you remember correctly back in 2004 it was all over the news that they broke up and such. Well imagine my reaction when I read that Mattel is using the social media world to promote their back together. There’s talk about engagement which means there’s might be a wedding in the horizon. Ah!

Not only the Ottawa Citizen caught the news but even the blog world… And believe it or not but they are using facebook and twitter as well as an online dating site to promote it.

I think Mattel is using the social media world in a wise and innovative way to make people talk about Barbie and Ken. My daughter is too young to understand all the buzz going around. She has been introduced to Barbie only recently. But having grown up with Barbie and Ken, I wonder where this marketing will be going and how little girls everywhere will react to this news.

For more details go to http://barbieandken.com/ - Yes they even have their own website....

Texting & Driving

Lately in the news (in Canada anyway with Toronto and Ottawa), we hear of bus drivers caught texting while driving…

Believe it or not, there is a law in Ontario which do not tolerate this kind of behaviour behind the wheel…  if caught you can get fine up to 300$!

Even though my kids don’t have a cell phone yet, we tell them often how texting and driving don’t mix and can cause serious problems.

AT&T has put up a little documentary on the subject.

Listen to this with your teenagers , discuss about it and hopefully they will think twice before doing it (so does anyone who have a cell phone!)…

What’s in a name?

[nablo_typer_160px_thumb[3].jpg]

In the Bible, a name has a special meaning.

Abram means “exalted father” – problem was he didn’t have any kids.   Then God changed his name to Abraham “father of a multitude”.   God had a plan for him.   A grand plan…

Sarai got her name changed to Sarah but both names means princess.

Isaac’s name means “laughter”.

Theophilus means lover of God.

And I could go on like this throughout the Bible.  Even places had their special names.

Beersheba means well of the oath.

Jerusalem means city of peace.

Gethsemane means oil press.

God himself has many names (as well of Jesus) and each of them represent a special aspect of Him.

El-Olam is the Eternal God.

El-Elyon is God Most High.

El-Shaddai is Gold Almighty, the All-Sufficient One.

You might wonder where I am going today.  For my post on NaBloPoMo, I thought of sharing the meaning of my kids’ names.

As you can see, the middle names of each of our kids have the Gift of God in either the inherent meaning or the spiritual connotation.   It was important for us that this was reflected in their names because they are indeed gifts from God to us.

And this week-end, we saw that Alexandre was carrying his name very well.   We were invited to a birthday party and he was the oldest child there.   Nevertheless, he helped a lot with the younger kids during games with his brother Dominic and was overshadowing his little sister at times.    Result:  People around us were impressed by the two older kids and kept telling us about it.   This was so nice to hear and to “digest” as well.    As a mom, hearing these kind of comments is important as it confirms that what I am doing as a parent is good.

Thank you Lord for our four kids.  They are indeed precious.   May your hand be upon them throughout their lives.

Happy Anniversary TOS Digital!

A year ago, the new digital version of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine came in the world.

And I had an opportunity to review the digital version in the past.   At first, I was a bit against the digital part of the magazine.   I'm the kind of person who loves to have the magazine in my hands.  But then I rapidly discovered some advantages of it.   Like being able to forward a specific article to a friend or have instant access on the website of some advertizers.   Also, having a digital copy of a magazine permits to reduce the number of trees that are cut to produce the paper magazine.

To celebrate the first anniversary of the digital version of TOS, the folks at TOS  are offering a special price for whoever who wants to receive it.   The prices will go up from week to week so act fast!

From January 19th to the 24th, it will cost you 10.95$ for a 1 year subscription and you will get 5 e-books!

From January 25th to the 31st, it will cost you 12.94$ for a 1 year subscription and you will get 4 e-books!

From February 1st to the 8th, it will cost you 14.95$ for a 1 year subscription and you will get 3 e-books!

Finally, after February 9th, the price will be 16.95$ for a 1 year subscription and unfortunately you won't get any e-books...

The five e-books which could become your bonus gifts are:  Living and Learning On One Income, Valentine's Project Pack by Hands of a Child, Hands-On History Activity-Pack from Homeschool In The Woods,  Jesus - The Life-Giver from Katherine Loop, and What's the Matter: An Introduction to Chemistry (Grades 3-9) frin Treasure Box Press.   All great books that I personally wouldn't mind having too!

So hurry fast!   And you will have a great digital magazine to expect in your e-mail as well as wonderful e-books to read when you have a minute!

Click here for more details or order.

10 famous people who were homeschool

A friend on Facebook posted this note and I thought it was interesting.   I just wanted to share it with you all...

10 FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO WERE HOMESCHOOL

1. Agatha Christie. Agatha was a painfully shy girl, so her mom homeschooled her even though her two older siblings attended private school.

2. Pearl S. Buck was born in West Virginia, but her family moved to China when she was just three months old. She was homeschooled by a Confucian scholar and learned English as a second language from her mom.

3. Alexander Graham Bell was homeschooled by his mother until he was about 10. It was at this point that she started to go deaf and didn’t feel she could properly educate him any more. Her deafness inspired Bell to study acoustics and sound later in life.

4. If Thomas Edison was around today, he would probably be diagnosed with ADD – he left public school after only three months because his mind wouldn’t stop wandering. His mom homeschooled him after that, and he credited her with the success of his education: “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint.”

5. Ansel Adams was homeschooled at the age of 12 after his “wild laughter and undisguised contempt for the inept ramblings of his teachers” disrupted the classroom. His father took on his education from that point forward.

6. Robert Frost hated school so much he would get physically ill at the thought of going. He was homeschooled until his high school years.

7. Woodrow Wilson studied under his dad, one of the founders of the Southern Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS). He didn’t learn to read until he was about 12. He took a few classes at a school in Augusta, Georgia, to supplement his father’s teachings, and ended up spending a year at Davidson College before transferring to Princeton.

8. Mozart was educated by his dad as the Mozart family toured Europe from 1763-1766.

9. Laura Ingalls Wilder was homeschooled until her parents finally settled in De Smet in what was then Dakota Territory. She started teaching school herself when she was only 15 years old.

10. Louisa May Alcott studied mostly with her dad, but had a few lessons from family friends Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Can you imagine?

French TV Show - Passe-Partout

Passe-Partout was a tv shows in the 70s in Quebec...   It was geared to young kids ages 3-6 years old...

Quebec decided to create their own preschool show after debating if they will translate Sesame Street or not.   And I think it was a good idea.    Oh don't take me wrong Sesame Street is great but Passe-Partout was wonderful and believe me when I say translating shows sometimes misses some of the quality.   Personally I think that the only company who does a great job at translating their movies would be Disney.

So back to Passe-Partout.   A few years ago, someone had the idea of bringing back the episodes on DVD.... and since then we have now 5 sets of DVDs on the market.    We actually own 4 of them.  The fifth one came out this week...   And I am going to do to Costco to see if they have it.

Passe-Partout is a must in our household.   Being French-Canadians we want our kids to be exposed as much as possible to French.   They pick up English pretty good thank you and some have the tendency to speak in English before French.  So now we try to have them speak in French first.   So if they speak in English, we ask them to say the same thing in French.   If they have trouble then we say the sentence and need to repeat behind us.   Voilà.

If you want to know more about Passe-Partout check this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passe-Partout  and read about it.   If you are interested in buying them... well I just checked and they are listen on Amazon.com...   Check it out!  It's a good show to introduce kids to french.  Worth the money believe me!  and this is coming from a French-Canadian...

Homeschool Crew News...

Dear readers,

If you are interested in reading the reviews of my fellow crew mates, you can do that easily in two different ways...

First option: You can access the homeschool crew blog and read the reviews of whoever got selected to a specific product (not everyone will review everything - it depends on the ages of our children or the type of product...).  This can also be access in my friends list on the right side of the blog.

Second option: If you want to see the blogs of everyone in the crew, I now have a blogroll on the right side of my blog.  Simply click on the + to expand the blogroll and you will see a list of all the blog of the crew members.

Voilà!  It's as simple as that.

Happy reading!

Did you know?

Today is the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire which happened in  in 1871.  The ifre leveled 3 1/2  square miles, destroying 17450 buildings and leaving 98500 people homeless and about 250 people dead.   Loss of the city was estimated to 200$ million.  Legend says that the fire began because the cow of Mrs O'Leary kicked a lantern in the barn on DeKoven Street.

On the same day - same year a fire destroyed the entire town of Peshtigo, WI, killing more that 1100 people.  This one was a forest fire which burned across six counties.
