World Literature

world-literature-studentWorld Literature – Cultural Influences of Early to Contemporary Voices
Written by James O. Stobaugh
Published at Master Books

About the Curriculum

High School Level Student book and Teacher’s Guide

Enjoy beloved classics while developing vocabulary, reading, and critical thinking skills!

  • Each literature book in the series is a one-year course
  • Each chapter has five lessons with daily concept-building exercises, warm-up questions, and guided readings
  • Easy-to-use with suggested reading schedules and daily calendar
  • Equips students to think critically about philosophy and trends in culture, and articulate their views through writing

A well-crafted presentation of whole-book or whole-work selections from the major genres of classic literature (prose, poetry, and drama), each course has 34 chapters representing 34 weeks of study, with an overview of narrative background material on the writers, their historical settings, and worldview.

The rich curriculum’s content is infused with critical thinking skills, and an easy-to-use teacher’s guide outlines student objectives with each chapter, providing the answers to the assignments and weekly exercises. The final lesson of the week includes both the exam, covering insights on the week’s chapter, as well as essays developed through the course of that week’s study, chosen by the educator and student to personalize the coursework for the individual learner.

My Thoughts

I am quite excited about this specific product.   I was wondering what I will do with my kids when they go through high school for literature.  Having a curriculum that I know will introduce them to world literature as well as biblical concepts is fabulous.    Each lessons is well explained and will guide student and teacher on a fabulous journey through World literature by exploring cultural influences of early to contemporary voices.   This book works hand-in-hand with the World History course offered by Master Books as well.   Needless to say that I am looking forward to combine the two courses in a few years.

In all, you will find 34 weeks of various World literature through time including books, selections of work, classic prose, poetry and drama.   Each chapter can be done in a week with five lessons allowing the student to build up a critical thinking of philosophy and articulating their own world view through writing exercises.

The literature covered in this curriculum includes Epic of Gilgamesh, Papyrus of Ani: Egyptian Book of the Dead, The Illiad, The Odyssey, Histories, The Death of Socrates, The Republic, The Rhetoric and THe Poetics, Oedipus Rex, The Aeneid, Meditations, Sermon on the Mount, Confessions, War and Peace, Crime and Punishment, Faust, The Stranger, and many more other ones. The students will have the opportunity of exploring World literature, build up their vocabulary, complete concept builders, write essays, and get tested on what they have learned as well.  The book is packed with guidelines and literature explorations for students to discover.   However, I wouldn’t put that in a grade 8 or 9 student.   I would consider it for a grade 10 and up I order to prepare the student in being able to express their worldview with hesitation to others.    I find it a great tool to have to allow the student to expand their knowledge in World literature.

The Teacher’s Guide will allow the parent to guide the student in his/her exploration of World Literature as well as provide all the concept builders, the readers, essays assignments and tests to be done.    In this guide you will also find the suggested answers for the concept builders, the summaries for essays (what need to be mentioned in the essay written by the student) as well as the answers to the tests.   You definitively need to have the Teacher’s Guide in order to be able to provide help if needed.    Thinking of it, I think I would very much like to go through the lessons myself in order to learn more about World Literature.

Another course that I would also consider for our high school years would be the British Literature course.   American homeschoolers might also want to explore the American Literature course for their students.

Also available are the American Literature Student & Teacher’s Guide as well as the British Literature Student & Teacher’s Guide.

Tower of Babel

tower-of-babelTower of Babel – The Cultural History of Our Ancestors
Written by Bodie Hodge
Published at Master Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing

About the book

The Tower of Babel: The Cultural History of Our Ancestors reveals our shared ancestry as never before! Many are familiar with the Biblical account of Babel, but after the dispersal, there was a void beyond Biblical history until empires like Rome and Greece arose. Now, discover the truth of these people groups and their civilizations that spread across the earth and trace their roots back to Babel as well as to the sons and grandsons of Noah.

Many of today’s scholars write off what occurred at the Tower of Babel as mythology and deny that it was a historical event. Beginning with the Biblical accounts, author Bodie Hodge researched ancient texts, critical clues, and rare historic records to help solve the mystery of what became of the failed builders of Babel. For the purpose of defending the Bible, Hodge presents these and other vital historical facts surrounding this much-debated event. Teens and older can use this layman’s reference for Biblical classes, ancient history, apologetics training, and to realize their own cultural connection to the Bible.

My Thoughts

If there is one story of the Bible that I want my kids to understand and comprehend the major impact it had on the world as we know it today, it is definitively the Tower of Babel.  This book will decorticate all the questions you might have concerning the events written in the Tower of Babel in order to give you a better perspective on how these reflects the cultural heritage we have today.   Like it or not, most of us Christians who are going to church every week have the tendency of skipping the biblical genealogies when reading the Word.   I personally think that you can glean vital information when looking at genealogies – and I am glad I was able to get our personal genealogies as a family (well most of it I am missing my paternal grand-mother side.).

Each chapter of this book is answering a specific question that many people might ask nowadays – whether because of ignorance or because of criticism and controversies surrounding the events.

  1. How do you pronounce Babel?
  2. What kind of specific attacks are there?
  3. Is this really a biblical authority issue?
  4. The biblical account
  5. Isn’t there a contradictions between Genesis 10 (World having multiple languages) and 11 (World having one language)?
  6. Why were the people disobedient?
  7. When did the scattering occur?
  8. Where did the scattering occur?
  9. Was the Tower of Babel built or not?
  10. What was the purpose of the Tower of Babel?
  11. What did the Tower look like?
  12. Did all ~7000 languages today come out of Babel?
  13. What about extra-biblical tables of nations and genealogies that go back to Noah?
  14. Was Nimrod in charge of forcing a rebellion prior to the events in Genesis 11:1-9?
  15. Did the continents split in the days of Peleg?
  16. By what means did those scattering from Babel travel?
  17. Where did all the people go initially?
  18. What about Asia, the Americas, and Australia?
  19. Were Noah’s three sons triplets?
  20. Did those listed in the account of the Tower of Babel have other children after they left Babel?
  21. Did people really live those great ages from Creation well past the Tower of Babel?
  22. What about the decrease in ages?
  23. What about ancestor worship?
  24. Are there any extra-biblical accounts of a language split?
  25. The origin of writing
  26. What was the original language and How was Moses able to read such texts when he wrote Genesis?
  27. Was Pentecost a reversal of what happened at Babel?
  28. Why is biblical authority so important on this issue?
  29. Conclusion: Seeing Christ at Babel?

The book is packed with images, drawings, maps indicating the movement of the people as well as genealogies since Noah.  Each chapter will answer the question at the beginning of the chapter and highlight the evidence behind the answer.    I love reading such books where I can learn a new perspective of a well-known story and discover the ramifications it has on the world today.    Reading this book opened up my understand and challenge me in taking the time to read more theological books in the future.   As a matter of fact I so loved the book that I decided to purchase the one titled “The Fall of Satan” which was written by the same author.

I find this book could be a great tool for high school level students in order for them to comprehend the event of the Tower of Babel and how it affected the world afterward.   It is also a great book for them to build up their understanding of the Bible as a whole and develop skills that will allow them to defend their faith in the future.   Finally, I think that all believers should read a book like this one in order to deepen their knowledge of events in the Bible and grow in their faith.

Advice for Seekers

advice-for-seekersAdvice for Seekers
Written by Charles H. Spurgeon
Published at Attic Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing

About the book

Many people get lost in their faith walk by using the map of their own understanding rather than the guidance of God. Spurgeon, one of Christianity’s most enduring influences, helps set the seeker on the path of peace. In his classic work, Advice for Seekers, Spurgeon offers Scriptural truths to help remove the obstacles so the simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can be grasped.

From his own experiences and his years of ministry, C.H. Spurgeon shares a gentle spirit of grace through his words to comfort and encourage those desiring to know the Lord.

Chapters inside this exquisite reproduction of a late 1890’s classic work include:

  • Do not Try to Save Yourself
  • Despised Ones Seeking Jesus
  • Seekers Touching Christ
  • Still no Light and Why?
  • and 9 more

Apart from Biblical writers, Spurgeon is considered to be history’s most widely read preacher. Called the “prince of preachers,” he is said to have preached the gospel to over ten million people in his lifetime.

My Thoughts

I always wanted to read the writing of past Christian leaders and getting this little book from Charles H. Spurgeon opened my interest in discovering more wisdom from the past.   First and foremost, I need to inform my reader that this little gem of a book is written in what I consider older English so for this French Canadian it was a bit difficult to read but the message is very inspiring and clear.    I think that everyone who are Christian ought to read Advice for Seekers – even if you have been a Christians for 16 years as I have.    It will give your mind a new perspective of the Gospel message.  Most of us are used to listening our pastor on a weekly basis but sometimes I find that the message is not preached as it used to be back in the days of Spurgeon and others renowned pastors.

Who was Charles Spurgeon?

120px-Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born in June 1834 and died in January 1892.   He was a British particular Baptist preacher.  He is also known as the “Prince of Preachers”.  In his lifetime, he apparently preached to around 10,000,000 people often at numerous places each week.    He was also a prolific author of many works including sermons, autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns, and more.

The book Advice for Seekers provide insights on how Spurgeon concluded that what stand in our way to move forward and grow in our faith is us.   This book contains a collection of sermons preached to encourage people to remove the barriers that hinder our grow as Christians and trust our Savior completely with everything in our life.

I sincerely think that this book is not only for seekers looking for God but for everyone who wants to grow in their faith and want to move forward in complete trust with God.    I have gleaned precious insights from it while reading it and think that even though it’s written in old English, that I would want my kids to read it when they come in age to understand it more (high school).

Please watch this little presentation of the book.

Advice for Seekers is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Chronicles of Dinosauria

chronicles-of-dinosauriaChronicles of Dinosauria
Written by Dave Woetzel ad RIchard Dobbs
Published at New Leaf Publishing 373212_235636363124693_379226038_n

About the book

Explore legends, mythical sightings, and intriguing explorations from around the globe!

  • Enjoy the unique combination of visual illustrations and unforgettable accounts.
  • Discover why the author calls into question what we've been taught to believe and understand about the history of dinosaurs and man.

Every legend is said to include some grain of truth, and for years co-author Dave Woetzel has sought to separate fact from fiction as he explores mysteries related to dinosaurs, mankind's history, and the biblical time-line. Teaming with artist and designer Richard Dobbs, the two have created a visual archive of expeditions and intriguing clues to explore, all of which highlight the connection to the authority and reliability of Scripture.

Provocative artifacts from around the world are examined in an exquisite, full-color book that hints at man's familiarity with living dinosaurs. Studies point to more than simple answers beneath the waves of Loch Ness, and other sites around the world, many investigated personally by the author. Here is the study of cryptozoology and the discoveries that seem to defy all evolutionary time-lines, vividly illustrated and filled with rare photos.

My Thoughts

If you ever wondered if dinosaurs ever existed and want to discover the truth about them, this is the book you need to get!   Chronicles of Dinosauria is packed with information concerning the dinosaurs and how they related to us through time.   You will be exploring various evidences of the presence of these beasts via fossil evidence, historical evidence, artistic evidence, cryptozoology evidence and biblical evidence.

The book is marvelous with plenty of illustrations and photos supporting the evidence presented through the pages.   As I read and learned more about the dinosaurs, I got more and more convinced of the presence even after the flood.  The information in this book has been well researched and I doubt that you will still believe that the dinosaur were killed by comet millions of years ago after you read it.

I was personally in awe when I read about the discovery of unfossilized dinosaur bones supported by photographies.    In this book, you will also have a fun activity to do with your kids in creating fossils.    I also enjoyed reading about the dragons and how the dinosaurs are in fact these beast seen in the Chinese culture.   The art evidence is also fabulous to read about and discover via photographies.

This book is a great gift for a boy who is highly interested in dinosaur and wish to learn more about them.   It is a fabulous book to own and read together as a family in order to discover the truth about the dinosaurs.

Made in Heaven

madeinheaven_thumb3This month as part of the Moms of Master Books review team, I am presenting you a book that I have reviewed last year titled Made in Heaven by Ray Comfort and Jeffrey Seto.373212_235636363124693_379226038_n

This magnificient book will open up your eyes on God’s creation and how we can applied how things work in nature in our lives.   For example take a bird feather and examine it for a minute.   Birds are a perfect example on how God was creative when He made them.   All sort of shapes, sizes and colors are a delight to see during the warmer seasons in Canada.   They sang beautifully, fly from trees to trees, build houses for themselves and the eggs differs from one another too.   But what attract our eyes most often is their feathers and the brilliant colors they display.

As we all know, we couldn’t see colors if there wasn’t any light.  Have you ever took a prism and shine it in the sunlight? What happened?  A marvelous rainbow splashed the wall of the room you were in.   In this book, your learning about colors goes a notch higher as you learn that color characteristic is determined by its wavelength.   Each color has a wavelength – blue for example has a wavelength of 475 nanometer.   So Blue Jays (which stays year-round in Ontario) obtain the colors of their feather from spherical air pockets trapped in the barbs.  The size of the air trapped is apparently tuned to the wavelength of a set color.

Scientists were able to replicate this phenomenon in order to improve laser efficiency.   I won’t go on on how it was done because I want to pick your curiosity and encourage you to get the book to discover how it was done.

The book is packed with things like this.  You will learn more about the following:

  • Swim like a fish – copying the shark scales
  • Body armor of the future – strength of fish scales
  • Stronger than Kevlar – spider web strong
  • Pinecone fashion
  • Cleaning like a lotus leaf
  • Robosquid and jet propulsion
  • Mantis shrimp eye and entertainment technology
  • Butterflies and counterfeit currency
  • Human eye – camera lens
  • Computer virus software and human immune system
  • Human Brain and computer chips
  • Bird feathers and anti-lasers
  • Bombardier beetle
  • Mosquitoes and painless needles
  • Listening like a fly
  • Self-healing materials
  • Mussels and their sticking power
  • Wasp nest and papermaking
  • Velcro
  • Cat eyes saving lives
  • Gecko feet
  • Why fish are faster
  • Fins for fans
  • Termites and air-conditioned buildings
  • Broken bones, healing and Eiffel Tower
  • Wipers and eyes
  • Kingfishers break sonic book for trains
  • Worms at the center of tunnel safety
  • Moth’s eye and solar cells
  • Leaf and power supplies
  • Sunflowers and catching rays

In all, you will go through 32 examples on how nature can help scientists in making our lives easier.   This book is perfect to read on your own or to use as part of your high school curriculum for older levels.   It ties information from technology and engineering for your kids who like that sort of thing.   It also opens up your eyes on God genius creativity and marvel on how He thought of everything.    I really like this book and highly recommend it to everyone!

The best-selling Wonders of Creation series adds a new biology-focused title that unveils the intricate nature of God's world and the harmony that was broken by sin.

Who are Jean Lightner and Tom Hennigan?

jean-lightnerDr. Jean Lightner is an adjunct professor with Liberty University Online. She has a B.S. in Agriculture (Animal Science major), a D.V.M., and a M.S. in veterinary preventive medicine. She has contributed numerous articles to creation journals, magazines, and websites and serves as a board member for the Creation Research Society. She is also a member of the Creation Biology Society, Christian Veterinary Mission and the National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps.tom-hennigan

Tom is an Associate Professor of Organismal Biology at Truett-McConnell College and has an A.A.S. from the New York State Forest Ranger School, a B.S. in Natural Resources Management from the University of Alaska, an M.S. in Education from Syracuse University, and an M.P.S. in Environmental and Forest Biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He has written for the Creation Research Society Quarterly, Answers Research Journal, Creation, Creation Illustrated and Answers Magazines.

My Thoughts

Ecology was one of my favourite subjects when I was in my first year of high school.   We had a great room with numerous samples of animals and a great teacher.   Though as we read through this book, I realized that my lessons back then were not Christian based – even though I was attending a Catholic private school.  I was looking forward to this book when I applied to be part of the review team and I am not disappointed in it.

First, I need to specify that this particular book has been written to reach students in three levels of education.  Thanks to the color coded text, you can easily identify the parts of each chapter that have been written to a specific levels – Level 1 (in white) for grades 5 & 6, Level 2 (in green) for grades 7 & 8, and finally Level 3 (in blue) for grades 9 through 11.  image  Part of the best-selling series Wonders of Creation, The Ecology Book will enable your child to

  • Study the intricate relationship between living organisms and our place in God’s wondrous creation
  • Examine important words and concepts, from different habitats around the world to our stewardship of the world’s resources
  • Gain insight into influential scientists and their work
  • Fully understand practical aspects of stewardship
  • Investigate ecological interactions and connections in creation

This book can be used in a Christian classroom, for independent study or for an homeschool setting.   In our case, I used it in our homeschool with my grade 6th student and one of siblings – a grade 3 student.   After reading two chapters, the grade 3 student thought it was too much for him while my grade 6th student thought it was interesting.  But I can see the potential of this book as we can build up the knowledge as the students advance in their studies.   In my case, I am planning to get my oldest read the book again next year with both the white and green levels.  Eventually, my three other kids will go through this book themselves but they are still too young for it (currently in grades K, 2 and 3).

In total you will find nine chapters introducing and expanding on the subject of ecology. Here’s an idea of what the first three chapters cover.

  • Harmony in Creation
  • Ecology: The Study of “Our House”
  • The Dominion Mandate
  • What’s on the Menu Today?
  • Taking a Liking to Lichens
  • A Fungus Among Us
  • The Plant – Bacteria Connection
  • Of Bacteria, Cattle, and Men
  • The Room of the Matter
  • Doing Ecology in God’s Creation
  • Appendix A Tips for Doing Good Science Experiments
  • Appendix B Simplified Ecological Sampling Methods
  • Glossary ad Index

For this specific review, I was asked to review three chapters of the book.   Since we are using this book as part of our science curriculum right now, I thought of presenting the first three chapters.

Chapter one – Harmony in Creation

In this chapter we learned that God created the World and what is the trinity.   My kids knew some of the things presented in this chapter already but I find it a great reminded that our Creator has thought of everything when he created the world.   One thing that dawned on me was the fact that even though at the beginning the plants were our food somehow God had thought about the possibility of the Fall and how it would impact the consumption of food.

image  imageimage

Chapter two – Ecology: The Study of “Our House”

In this chapter you will learn who William Derham and Ernst Haeckel are, what the word ecology mean, where do ecologist work, how cycles exist (ex: the water cycle) and how the scientific name for animals are created.   Even though we are reading and discussing the level 1 information, we were able to get an introduction for all these in the chapter.   I particularly loved the building memories suggestions which allows a family to discover nature together.

imageimage

Chapter three – The Dominion Mandate

We were made to rule the Earth and to take care of it.   In this chapter, the kids got reminded of the primary role that Adam and Eve had when living the the garden and what we need to do in order to make our world better.   We also read more about the Shepherd Kind analogy and even I learn a few things about the rod and the staff of a shepherd.  In this chapter, we also got introduced to the Make a Difference suggestions in order to keep our planet clean.     The pictures within the book are stunning and help to bring the text into perspective.   I also love the fact that this book can be used for multiple grades.   It’s fun to discover a bit more of a subject when you learn about it.    My three younger kids do stay while I read and sometimes they will ask questions.    I can see their brain working when they react to what I read or to a picture.

As I am writing this, we are pursuing our reading of the remaining chapters in order to complete it.  I am also planning to put this book again in my oldest son next year as he will enter grade 7 and I would like him to deepen his understanding of ecology.   This time, he will have words to know and more text to read.    Reading this book with my kids makes me looking forward for the spring season where nature wakes up and more species of animals will invade it.    I would also clean up our street if possible with my kids one day.   But there is still much snow everywhere so we will wait until sometime in April to do so.

Whether used as part of our newly developed science curriculum or simply as a unique unit study, the book includes full-color photos, informative illustrations, and meaningful descriptions. The text encourages an understanding of a world designed, not as a series of random evolutionary accidents, but instead as a wondrous, well-designed system of life around the globe created to enrich and support one another.

And to complete the lessons you will find outdoor activities that will intertwine with the reading in order to make the learning experience  more alive.  This fabulous resource will allow any homeschooling families with multiple children to adapt the teaching for multi-age lessons.

I find this book very complete and interesting to read.  Personally, it gives me a Christian perspective of what I had learned so many years ago while sitting in my ecology classroom.   It is a book that I know I won’t have to worry to put in my kids hands when they need to read their lessons.   And the fact that we have family activities included throughout the book is fabulous.  It will encourage us to go out and be good stewards of our planet.

The Ecology Book is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The Henry Morris Study Bible

henry-morris-study-bibleThe Henry Morris Study Bible
Published at New Leaf Publishing

About the Bible

The Henry Morris Study Bible is “an invaluable tool for the defense of the Christian faith” according to Dr. John MacArthur. With over 10,000 study notes, no other resource offers the comprehensive analysis of biblical creation and authority of Scripture as this one presents.

The written Word of God is under attack in our culture like never before. The annotations of this King James Version of the Bible will:

  • explain the Bible’s difficult passages
  • resolve its alleged contradictions
  • point out the evidences of its divine origin
  • confirm its historical accuracy
  • note its remarkable anticipations of modern science
  • remove any doubts about its inerrancy, authority and ability to meet every human need.

This 2,215 page uses a 10 point font and a two column format making it easy to read. Inside you will also find the Words of Christ in red, 22 total appendices, full color maps and a concordance. The hard cover offers an noble and gentle design that both men and women will find attractive. The professional smyth-sewn binding gives this reference tool a life that will span generations.

Dr. Henry Morris is known as the father of modern Creation science, the founder of Institute for Creation Research (ICR) and the author of many well known apologetic books. His thriving legacy continues to equip Christians to be able to defend the accuracy and authority of Scripture today.

My Thoughts

I will admit that I am not too excited about this Bible simply because it is a King James version.   I always have trouble with that specific version of the Bible and I still have not gotten my head around it yet.    I’m sure it is a well made version as I know that numerous Christian throughout the world trust it and only read this version.  But for my this old English way of reading is just too much – English is my second language…

But I will take the time to explain the benefits of this Bible as best as I can.  Dr. Henry Morris himself has undertaken the task of incorporating the annotations found in this Bible.   Every day for a period of 60 years, he has study the Bible and came to the conclusion that it was the very Word of God.   He considered the histories authentic, the science accurate and the wisdom found in it to be of highly importance for living well.     The annotations in this Bible will explain the difficult passages, resolve the contradictions often mentioned by people, point out to evidence to its divine origin, confirm the historical accuracy, demonstrate how the prophecies were fulfilled and hopefully remove any doubts about its inerrancy, its authority and its ability to meet our needs as human being.

The Henry Morris Bible also support the literal Biblical creation account which will help the reader to understand earth history with scientific understanding.    Also, this Bible follow a literal approach to the Bible.   Essentially, this Bible has been put together in the hopes that it will help many Christians to be able to better defend their faith and stand on firm ground when facing adversity in their beliefs.

I have read some of the annotations found in this Bible and found them historically sound.   I particularly like the fact that you also learn about various ancient practices when you read the notes.   I am not sure that at this point in time I am reading to read a KJV Bible but I am quite  impressed with the quality of the notes written but he “Father of Modern Creationism”.    I am sure this Bible will be very useful for us as we learn to defend our faith as we continue to learn more about God.  This Bible is quite thick and contains red lettering for highlighting the words of Jesus Christ.

About the Study Guide

This study guide is available for each Awesome Science DVD (a new series from Master Books). These help create a reflective learning situation after viewing each exciting episode, and are filled with substantial discussion questions, fill in the blank, true and false, as well as bonus activities. Can be used in Science and religion class - also would be great for church youth groups.

Our Thoughts

Here’s another interesting DVD from Awesome Science!   Noah Justice has once again delivered a great explanation of biblical evidence in some of the geological wonders in our world.  This time he is bringing us to Yosemite and Zion National Parks – both places that I would love to visit one of these days!   Through this DVD we learned the history of Yosemite National Park and learned that it was one of the first scenic areas of land set aside for the enjoyment of the public.   The view is breathtaking and it’s a wonder how people don’t see the hand of the creator when they visit that place.

Thought this DVD you will learn how the valley is evidence of erosion from a global Flood, how the one and only ice age happened and how long it lasted, and finally you will travel to Zion Canyon to discover its layers, arches and hanging valleys.   We particularly liked the original example of Noah presenting a miniature version of how Zion Canyon have been formed.   This presentation in itself it worth the whole DVD I find.  It was impressive and gave you a new perspective of the global Flood.

You can also get the Study Guide for the video if you want to deepen your learning experience.   Use it to test the knowledge acquire during the video or to simply discuss what has been said.  This specific Study Guide is divided in two major sections representing the two National Parks explored with Noah Justice.  It contains bonus activities, word list to study, fill in the blanks, discussion questions, true/false statements, as well as more information on the concepts learned during the visioning of the DVD.

Once again I am not disappointed with the DVD from Awesome Science and find that these are a great addition to homeschool, school or even personal library. I find it essential that Christians realized how things happened and not be manipulated by evolution thinking. This DVD is geared for children and teens but adults will enjoy it as well. However, I find that my younger kids have more trouble to stay focused during the whole length of the DVD. Besides, Noah uses terminology that might be going over their head. Nevertheless, they are learning while they are watching even if they don’t catch everything at the first time. The videos of Awesome Science are something you can go back to on a regular basis and discover something new out of it.

The DVD is available at your favourite bookstore, even at amazon.com. Unfortunately the DVD is not available on amazon.ca for reasons unknown to me.

The Study Guide can be purchased at amazon.ca or amazon.com.  It is also available for download on the NLPG website.

Our Thoughts

My oldest son was very excited when we received the latest three dvds of Noah Justice and his Awesome Science series.  We have both been waiting about these after we discovered the first three episodes last year.   These DVDs bring to life the understanding of the catastrophic Great Flood and will provide you with clear explanations and evidence found in the real world and based on the Bible.

Do you remember where you were on May 18th, 1980?   That’s when Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted and caused the largest landslide in modern human history.    I don’t know what I was doing back then as I was eleven years old.  More than likely I was in school and probably didn’t react to this catastrophic event much.   I would have been in grade 6 back then.    Nowadays, I see the advantage in learning more about such events happening in nature and being a Christian I want my kids to understand and be able to explain how the Great Flood really happen contrary to how scientists these days are saying…

This DVD and its study guide will not only present you the history of Mount St. Helens but will demonstrated how this event that happened 32 years ago can explain and support the evidence of the Biblical account of the flood.    Not only will you be able to defend your faith in the Noah’s story but you will also learn quite a bit on rapid erosion, coal formation and quick biologic recovery.   You will also explore with Noah how canyons, stratified layers and petrified forests can be formed rapidly during a catastrophic event like the eruption of Mount St. Helens.   Noah will also bring you inside a chamber where lava used t flow and explore a tunnel left by a tree under the ground.   My kids were in awe of these two explorations and now want to go visit the places where Noah has brought us.

The Study Guide is perfect to reinforce the learning done during the session on DVD. It contains bonus activities, a complete word list, key concepts to discover, some fill in the blanks sentences, some true or false statements as well as discussion questions.  All these can be used to test your student in his/her comprehension as well as deepen the learning done while watching the DVD.   I really love having the study guide with me when we watch the DVD.  I only wish that this study guide could fit in the DVD box for easy storage…

These DVDs were made for an audience on children and teens.  However, I find that it is a better fit for ages 10 and up as my younger kids will loose their concentration after a while and my almost nine years old son has missed some of the information shared by Noah.  However, the Awesome Science DVDs are so packed with information that I would strongly recommend that you watch them more than once in order to fully process all you can learn from them.   Literally, Noah doesn’t stop a minute to let you catch your breath.  He will repeat some key information in the DVD but still I think that watching the DVDs more than once or twice would be a good habit due to the fast pace.   The lessons are educational and entertaining in themselves.   I am very impressed with the quality of the videos and the information contained in them.

Other DVDs are available in the Awesome Science series; Explore the Grand Canyon, Explore Yellowstone, Explore Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest, Explore Yosemite and Zion National Parks, and Explore John Day Fossil Beds. All these DVDs will deepen your knowledge and understanding of creation science as it will use the biblical worldview to bring science to life.

Top 5 Favorites Items from New Leaf Publishing in 2012

MomsMasterBooksBefore I became an official Mom of Master Books last month, I have gotten their book for the previous two years and review numerous ones.    For December, it was suggested that we list our top five favorite items of the year.   Now, I haven’t been part of the group since January but numerous titles they have reviewed in the past twelve months have passed through my hands.   The first three titles I have on my fav five are three books that I have reviewed as well.   The last two are books I had purchased six years ago when I started my homeschool journey.  All five books are a marvelous addition to an homeschool or personal library.

#1 Big Book of Historybigbookofhistory_thumb

This particular book is a great tool to have in your homeschool especially if you are a Christian because it will give you the Christian perspective of History.   Not only that but you will end up having a HUGE timeline on your floor when your kids are exploring it and trying to find a specific event in history.  More than 15 feet of history that could be discovered with your kids while doing history lessons.

And to top it off, there is a Teacher’s guide of 32 pages that could be downloaded for free..

#2 Awesome Science

Ever wondering how the Bible can explain places like Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, or Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest?  Well you are in for a treat with the Awesome Science DVDs with Noah Justice.  This young man will explain in clear terms how the Bible can explain these places.   Let your family be transported in fabulous places and be in awe with God’s work in nature.   And to complete the lesson you can get a study guide which contains activities to help the information you have learned while watching the DVD sink into your brain and being absorb. There will be fill in the blanks, discussion questions, true/false questions, as well as bonus activities to do.

New titles have also been released this month to complete this awesome science video library for your homeschool.

madeinheaven_thumb3#3 Made in Heaven

I recently reviewed Made in Heaven and I was speechless by the quality of the text and the picture in it.   Not only do you discover how things we use on a daily basis (or not so daily basis) have been created from observing the world around us but you also see the great creativity of God when he created everything.  It was fun to read about the new money that we have in Canada and how they made it happened.    Recently we got some 50$ and 20$ with the new polymer bills and also learned that you have to be cautious when dealing with these as they stick to each other like a gecko would stick on a wall.

This book is a great addition for your personal library and would be a perfect book to read daily to learn more about science and creation at the same time.

#4 Complete Zoo Adventurecomplete-zoo-adventure

This book has been part of our lives for numerous years already.   Every time we go to a zoo, I bring this marvelous teaching book on animals.     It is packed with information about the animals you will encounter at the zoo and doesn’t contain evolution reference.   Each time we explore this book, we end up learning something new.   For example, did you know that polar bears has a third eyelid that acts as sunglasses in order to protect it from snow blindness?

IMG_3775

The Complete Zoo Adventure sets the stage for learning with "Before the Zoo" preparations, gives you the tools you need for an awesome "At the Zoo" experience, and then continues to deepen the understanding of God's Creation with fabulous "After the Zoo" activities.   You will also find seven devotionals, encounter fabulous creature, learn more about creation, get some scripture memory aids and more.   It a great book to have and own in your personal library and to bring with you when you visit a zoo!

complete-aquarium-adventure#5 Complete Aquarium Adventure

This book goes hand-in-hand with the Complete Zoo Adventure.    You will learn about amphibians, aquatic birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, pelicans, penguins, clownfish, eels, sea dragons, jellyfish, sharks, coral octopus, sting rays, and even whale sharks.   Similarly to the Complete Zoo Adventure, this book is designed for a on-the-go learning experience when you go to the aquarium, the lake or the beach.    It includes devotionals and other materials that will help you prepare your under-the-water exploration with your family.

  • At this point in time, there isn’t an aquarium near where we live.  There was talked of building one downtown at some point but the project never materialized.   However, while in Toronto last summer, we discovered that an aquarium is getting build in the downtown core which is quite exciting (though parking will be extremely difficult…).   I can’t wait to visit this new attraction in Toronto in the future.  You can bet that the Complete Aquarium Adventure will follow us during our explorations.

*******

These are five fabulous books and DVDs to own in your personal library.  I highly recommend each and every single one of them.

2012 was a great year for new products at New Leaf Publishing.  I am quite curious to see what will be coming in 2013.

These products are available at your favorite bookstore, even amazon.ca (except the DVDs) and amazon.com.
