Between Heaven and the Real World My Story

imageBetween Heaven & the Real World My Story
Written by Steven Curtis Chapman with Ken Abraham
Published at Revell

About the book

Experience the moments that made Christian music history

For decades, Steven Curtis Chapman's music and message have brought hope and inspiration to millions. Now, for the first time, Steven openly shares the experiences that have shaped him, his faith, his family, and his music in a life that has included incredible highs and faith-shaking lows.

From childhood, music has been both a refuge and a release for Steven. With humor and humility, he offers a backstage look at his early days on the road and his wild ride to the top of the charts. Discover the stories behind some of his best-loved songs. Walk with him as he and his wife, Mary Beth, navigate the joys and trials of marriage and family. Cheer for his return to the stage after doubting he could ever sing again. And SEE God in the aftermath of the tragic death of their five-year-old daughter Maria.
Poignant, gut-wrenchingly honest, yet always hopeful, Steven offers no sugary solutions to life's toughest questions. Yet out of the brokenness, he continues to trust God to one day fix what is unfixable in the space between heaven and the real world.

My Thoughts

I find it is always nice to read an autobiography of an artist every once in a while.   Like it or not, we have a tendency as human beings to uplift them to a pedestal and to think that they have the best of lives.   Reading an autobiography you can be guaranteed that the artist in question was involved in the process of writing the book hence you can have a perspective of his/her life through his/her own eyes.

So when I signed up to review the new autobiography of Steven Curtis Chapman, I knew I would have a peek in his past and discover more about his life at the same time.    I have received an Advanced Reading Copy so that I can peruse and discover the life of this artist whom we know in our house.  And let me tell you that you will not be disappointed when reading it.  The writing style is very intimate which will transport you almost in the living room of Steven where he will tell you his story.   Not only do you learn about his debut in music but you will also learn more about his parents, his wife and children, his rise to become the Christian artist that he is today and all the ups and downs of his life.

I found the book to be uplifting and particularly encouraging.   We have a son who is pretty good at music and at times he will write his own songs.   We want to encourage his interest in music for sure.    Reading about how Steven navigated the industry is an eye opener I find.   I will strongly suggest to my fifteen year old son to consider reading this book.  I seriously think it would be good for him to do so.

If you enjoy Steven Curtis Chapma’s music and would like to learn more about how he grew up, what he did while growing up, how he embarked on a journey to become an artist, I think this book will be a delight for you.   It is easy to read and the chapters will hook you from the beginning of the book.

Between Heaven & the Real World My Story is available at your favorite bookstore, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

It is also available for Kindle and Kindle App.

Planet Middle School

9780800723057Planet Middle School
Written by Dr. Kevin Leman
Published at Revell

About the book

You are about to embark on a fantastic journey.

If you've ever watched one of those movies where regular people are walking around minding their own business, until without warning their chests burst open and alien life-forms come slithering out, then you know what it's like to suddenly find yourself with a middle-schooler. Your once-peaceful home full of silliness and laughter morphs into the twisted landscape of a forbidding alien world, where moody adolescents drag their claws and moan about . . . well, just about everything.

Welcome to Planet Middle School. Better get comfortable. You'll be here awhile.

Lucky for you, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman successfully navigated Planet Middle School with five children. With his expert guidance, you'll see how you can help your child not only survive but thrive during these turbulent years. Leman shows you how to
· understand your child's rapidly expanding world
· respond rather than react to mood swings
· tell your child about sex (before someone else tells their version)
· create opportunities for your child to practice selflessness and gratitude
· ensure that your kid is one who loves home and family
· and much more

Middle-schoolers can be a strange, unpredictable species. But with a little help from Dr. Leman, you can ride out the interstellar storm with humor and confidence.

Houston, we have a problem.

It happens to every parent. One day, you have a sweet son or daughter who loves to snuggle on the couch and who puts a smile on your face just by walking into the room. The next day, it's as if someone left the door open and let in an alien with a smart mouth and an attitude that, frankly, you could do without. Entering middle school is like stepping onto a different planet--for parent and child alike.

But these years don't have to create chaos in your family. In fact, they can be some of the best, most fruitful years of all, a time when you can grow closer rather than drift apart. From the internal storms of hormonal changes to the external challenges of peer pressure and our technology-saturated culture, your child is under constant bombardment. Learn how to come alongside your middle-schooler with the love, understanding, and values that will see you both safely back home to earth when your time on Planet Middle School is over.

My Thoughts

This book was specifically written for parents of children who are in Middle School which means grades 7 and 8.   The main reason I jumped on this opportunity to review this book was because of the author.  We love Kevin Leman’s wisdom on how to parents our kids.   But I also was realistic about this book because I suspected that it was mainly written for parents whose middle schoolers go to a school.

And as I suspected the book is more geared for parents of kids in the school system.  But as a homeschooler, I find there are gems in this book as well.   An homeschool 7th or 8th grade kid will also go through some of these challenges like fitting in the crowd, going through changes physically and emotionally, and many more covered in this book.    Even if you are an homeschooler, I think you can glean some precious information on how to raise a middle schooler and encourage him/her through the changes he/she can experience in her life.  It isn’t easy to grow up.  I remember going through some  difficult days during that period of time in my life.   I wish my parents would have been christians and got that kind of information from an author like Kevin Leman.

The table of contents will give you an idea of what the author covers in his book.

  • Introduction contains information about how to determine that you have arrive to Planet Middle School.
  • 1. Creatures fromt he Black Lagoon:  our kids change when they hit the ages for grades 7 and 8.   Discover how your home and relationship with them can feels like a sci-fi  and what you can do to ease the transition.
  • 2. Their Expanding Universe:  What you need to know, and why you need to be along for the ride.
  • 3. All Flared up!: emotions and everyday drama for the middle schoolers and what you can do to weather the sudden flashes of brightness.
  • 4. Survival of the Fittest: why your child will do anything to fit in, and what you can do to combat the intensity of peer pressure.
  • 5. Walking on Polar Ice:  all middle schoolers are at risk, but some more than others.  How to identify and help the ones who need it.
  • 6. Confronting the Black Hole – Technology at Warp Speed: what you need to know and safeguard your child.
  • 7. Growing Up Way Too Fast: acceptance, belonging, and competence are critical to keep you and your child in the same stratosphere.
  • 8. Becoming a man/woman: all you need to know about hormones and the changes of the body.
  • 9. Blue Chip or Penny Stocks: talking about sex and respecting themselves and others.
  • 10. Understanding Who your kid really is: and how he or she got to be that way.
  • 11. How to talk so they’ll listen: and how to know when to shut up.
  • 12. Expect the best, get the best:  training your kids, believe in them, and having positive expectations are power plays in the game of parenting.
  • 13. Raising a “Home” boy/girl: Make your home the place where your kids want to be.
  • 14. Life-Mapping:  It is never too late to plan your child’s future, but you shouldn’t be the one in the driver’s seat.
  • 15. Creating an attitude of gratitude: Modeling and teaching gratitude within the home.
  • 15. Raising a giver in a gimme generation: how giving without receiving can transform your child’s world and his/her life.
  • Word of Encouragement
  • Conclusion – how we will miss these days of middle school eventually
  • A middle schooler’s 10 Commandments to parents.

As I mentioned above, not all the information found in this book would apply for homeschoolers but the more I read through the book, the more I realize that there are precious wisdom that any parents of a middle schooler could use in their parenting.   As I write this, I have a teenager and a child who is starting to show emotional issues of growing up.  This child is currently in grade 6 level but you can see him having more emotions and learning to deal with them.   As I said these days are though for any kid – wether boy or girl – and having the skills to help them go through this is essential for any parent.   I am thankful to have this book handy and will continue to read it to better prepare for the transition.  I consider myself fortunate to have two kids following each other quite closely.  But I suspect that I will return to this book when my daughter approaches grade 7 in a few years.   It will be a different ball game than our three boys too!

The Memory Weaver

9780800722326The Memory Weaver
Written by Jane Kirkpatrick
Published at Revell

About the book

Eliza Spalding Warren was just a child when she was taken hostage by the Cayuse Indians during a massacre in 1847. Now a mother of two, Eliza faces a new kind of dislocation; her impulsive husband wants to make a new start in another territory, which will mean leaving her beloved home and her mother's grave--and returning to the land of her captivity.

Haunted by memories and hounded by struggle, Eliza longs to know how her mother dealt with the trauma of their ordeal. As she searches the pages of her mother's diary, Eliza is stunned to find that her own recollections tell only part of the story.

Based on true events, The Memory Weaver is New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick's latest literary journey into the past, where threads of western landscapes, family, and faith weave a tapestry of hope inside every pioneering woman's heart. Get swept up in this emotional story of the memories that entangle us and the healing that awaits us when we bravely unravel the threads of the past.

My Thoughts

I love good historical novel and I knew that the author of this particular book had a specialty of writing stunning historical novels based on real events. The main character of the book is a strong woman who has lived and lives some hard times.   She was raised among the Cayuse Indians and had to leave the ministry of her parents when a massacre happened.   Now all grown up and having children of her own, she has to follow her husband who desire to relocate on the land of her captivity from when she was younger and leave behind those whom she loves.

The book allows you to follow the life of Eliza and her family as well as read the notes of her own mom before she dies through the pages of a journal.   Going back and forth between the past and the present, the reader can grasp a better understanding of how the events of the past have affected the current road Eliza is travelling with her family.      Intertwining the past with the present in a story is always interesting I find because it makes the story a bit more real as you discover the hopes and dreams of her mother through her journals.  And to be honest seeing the famous Hudson Bay Company blanket on the cover was a delight for the eyes for this Canadian.

The novel is interesting for someone who like the read historical novels particularly the kind that is pioneer based.

Published at Revell, a Baker Publishing Group imprint

It's time for Will to forge his own path.
But the force that drives him to greatness could also destroy him--and his family.

As the firstborn son of an old and powerful family, William Jennings Worthington VI knows what it's like to be under pressure. Groomed from birth with the relentless message that he was destined for greatness, Will has always pushed himself to succeed--nearly as much as his never-satisfied financial tycoon father pushes him. Becoming CEO of the world's largest and most adventuresome oil company seems the next logical step on the success ladder. But when circumstances turn, Will finds himself staring down a road that leads to Capitol Hill. Can he trade the board room for the Senate floor? Or will family secrets keep him from his destiny?

My Thoughts

I will admit that when I saw that Dr. Leman was a co-author of this new novel I immediately jumped on the opportunity to review the book.   I love Dr. Leman’s book and I was curious as to why he has embarked in a journey to write novels.

This book is the first of a series  called The Worthington Destiny.   From the first pages, you get to discover the characters and their relationships.   You are slowly drawn into the mystery of this novel with some reactions from the mother of the Worthington siblings as well as an unknown character that quickly enters the pages of the story.

I realized quickly why Dr. Leman is involved in this book.   Each of the siblings exhibit certain characteristics of the birth order theory that he has demonstrated in his book titled The Birth Order Book.  And at the end of the book, you can read a quick overview of each birth order place.   Each of the characters will have to deal differently with the events that happens in the book.   Each have their own ambitions but at the same time they respect and love their siblings.

Reading this novel, I can’t help but to be immerse in the lives of the characters and the events surrounding them.   I am left wanting to know more about their lives.   But unfortunately I will have to wait until spring 2016 to discover the next part of the story.

If you are looking for a great read this summer, I strongly recommend A Perfect Ambition

Emissary

By Thomas Locke
Published at Revell

About the book

With his twenty-first birthday, Hyam begins a journey that will lead him to his destiny--or his doom.

Hyam has always shown a remarkable ability to master languages, even those left unspoken for a thousand years. But now the shadow of suspicion that was cast upon him as a child prodigy at Long Hall is lengthening, and he must keep his identity hidden--or face annihilation.

As Hyam's mother slips toward death, she implores him to return to Long Hall before he settles down to farm his land. This journey born from duty becomes an impassioned quest for the truth. War is coming swiftly, and Hyam must rely upon his newfound powers and the friends he meets along the way in order to unravel the puzzling past and ensure that he--and the realm--will have a future.

In a world where magic has been outlawed for centuries, one young man discovers that he possesses powers beyond his wildest dreams.

But he does not realize how pivotal this gift will be in the days to come.

Except for the healing arts, magicking is a punishable offense in the realm. The only places it is still practiced are the Long Halls scattered throughout the land--isolated haunts of wizards called mages and their long-suffering students.

But hidden rivers of power course deep beneath the earth, and not everyone has obeyed the edict banning magic. Vixens lie in wait on the Galwyn road. A mysterious race of telepaths comes and goes invisibly. It is even rumored that Elves still hide among the wizened trees. And somewhere beyond the badlands, a growing menace threatens the hard-won peace of the realm.

This young man could stem the ominous tide . . . but only by turning away from everyone and everything he has ever known. And facing dangers he cannot fathom.

Who is Thomas Locke?

Thomas Locke is a pseudonym for Davis Bunn, the award-winning novelist with total worldwide sales of seven million copies. His work has been published in twenty languages, and critical acclaim includes four Christy Awards for excellence in fiction. He divides his time between Oxford and Florida and holds a lifelong passion for speculative stories. Davis's screenplay adaptation ofEmissary is currently under development as a feature film with a British production company. Learn more at www.tlocke.com.

My Thoughts

Here’s a fantasy novel that I think your kids will enjoy as much as you would if this is a genre that you like to read.    The story will grab your attention as you advance in the book and will keep your attention throughout the pages.   Suspense and adventure awaits you at the turn of each chapter in this book.   At the beginning of the book, you will go back and forth between two main characters up to the point where their lives converge.

I am usually picky with the books I review and I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised with this one.   I enjoyed reading it and discover one book from Thomas Locke aka Davis Bunn that I liked.    I have tried other titles from him in the past and just didn’t click with them.  The fantasy genre that he explored with this novel is definitively something that I expect he will write more of in the future.  However,  I question the fact that he is using a pseudonym as his writing pen name.   Why now use his real name?   Is it because of the different kind of genre he wrote in the past and he doesn’t want to mix the two genres under one pen name?

If you like fantasy novels and want to find a novel that will be a delight to read, I think Emissary would allow you to travel to a different world from the comfort of your own home.   It could also be a wonderful book to include in your child reading list as well.

See a map of the realm which can be found in the book.

This book is the first one in a series titled Legends of the Realm.  The second installment is schedule to be published in spring 2016.   Apparently, the screenplay adaption of Emissary is under development as a feature film with a British production company.

What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days

9780800722883What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days – 52 Encouraging Truths to Hold On To
Written by Holley Gerth
Published at Revell, a Baker Publishing Group Division

About the book

We all have days that make us want to pull the covers back over our heads and eat a dozen cupcakes.
Thankfully, Jesus said we don't "live on bread alone"--that includes cupcakes--"but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matt. 4:4). What we really need is truth.
If you're tired, discouraged, or feel a little empty inside, my prayer is that by the end of our time together, you'll be refreshed and nourished in a way that will sustain you through whatever the future may hold.
Remember, you're not alone, my friend.

In this uplifting book, Holley Gerth invites you to be filled with the strength, peace, and joy that come from God's promises. Each of the 52 devotions based on the Psalms will help you remember that God is good and we're all in this together.

Who is Holley Gerth?

Holley Gerth is a bestselling writer, certified life coach, and speaker. She loves connecting with the hearts of women through her popular blog and books like You're Already Amazing, You're Made for a God-Sized Dream, and Opening the Door to Your God-Sized Dream. She's also cofounder of (in)courage and a partner with DaySpring. Holley lives with her husband, Mark, in the South. Hang out with her at www.holleygerth.com.

My Thoughts

As a woman, I know that there are days harder than others.   And sometimes we need to be reminded that we matter and that God cares deeply for us.  Holley Gerth has a way of bringing into writing the truth about ourselves and about God.   This time, she has gleaned precious wisdom from the book of Psalms which will remind us of God’s goodness.  This little book is a companion of Holley’s book You’re Going to Be Okay.  However, the book can easily be use without it and bring healing in your heart.

This book can be used as a weekly devotional or during the span of 52 days.   You can also opted to read one devotions every once in a while in order to slowly advance in it and be touched by God – going back on the devotion and ponder on the words of Scripture.   Slowly but surely as you progress in this book, read the Scripture associated to the devotion, take the time to respond and personalize your prayer you will go through the book of Psalms.

One particular devotion has touched me more than the other ones so far – it was about how God wants to exchange the pain for joy.  When going through a painful experience, it is important to remember that it takes time to feel joy again.  It’s a process.  Still we are not alone in the midst of the pain.  God is there – always.

This book could be a great little gift to someone you know who is going through a difficult time or simply to bless someone in their stocking at Christmas.    What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

It is also available for Kindle.

  • communicate honestly and kindly

  • make family time count

As always, Dr. Leman's outstanding advice is laced with humor, great stories, and the wisdom that comes from a lifetime of experience.

If you've had it up to here with bickering, hurt feelings, and emotional exhaustion, Have a Happy Family by Friday is just what the doctor ordered.

  • Does any of this sound familiar?

You're sick of the word whatever.
  • You'd have a coronary if you ever walked into one of your kids' rooms and it was picked up.
  • You remember way back when you and your spouse paid attention to each other.
  • A good day is when you only send your kids to their room once.
  • An exciting evening with your spouse is no yelling and no trips to the ER.
  • You'd like to ground your kids for life . . . somewhere else.
  • Everybody wants a piece of you, and there's nothing left to give.
  • The only family member who listens to you is the dog.
  • You spend a lot of your time wishing things were different in your family.

Well, wishes can come true. You can be on your way today to a happy family by Friday. Is it really possible? Yes! Embrace the truths and suggestions in this book, practice them, and watch them last a lifetime.

I guarantee it.

My Thoughts

Let’s face it.  Living with different types of people in a home can be difficult at times.  Not every one is the same and emotions can cause problems.    After all we are not all cut from the same cookie shape right?   But don’t desperate because Dr. Kevin Leman has written a book to help you get a happier home within a week.    Every member of a family plays a vital role in the health and happiness of a household.    And the book Have a Happy Family by Friday will help your to improve life under the same roof.

On Monday you will learn to choose your words in order to change your family.   Essentially, what you says and how you say it has everything to do with how your loved ones respond.   And trust me when I say that it is completely true.   I have seen how my kids respond on how I say things and I definitively know how I personally respond depending on how things are said to me.  So this chapter was a great reminder that I need to be careful on how I say things to my kids and even my husband.

Tuesday is all about time, priorities, activities, work and finances.   Bottom line you will learn what to do, what not to do, and why.  This chapter was great and I did grab a few things but our family is already very careful in how much activities are done during a week.   We do swimming on Wednesday afternoon and the kids have Awana on Thursday night.   Every once in a while during the school year we will also have the homeschool coop.  Our oldest son is also attending youth once a week.  But apart from that we are very careful not to overschedule our calendar and prioritize the time as a family.  Finances is also another thing we have been straightening up for the past few years.

Wednesday I have learned how to navigate the teenage years with chaos.   Oh!  I know there will be though times but this chapter was wonderful to read for me as our oldest has turned 13 this year.   His three siblings are slowly coming closer to this age and I hope that God will pour patience over me for the years to come.

Thursday will be the day where you will read more about how your role as a mom/dad and your marriage can affect the family as well.   Having attended numerous marriage conference and training since our engagement, we have continued to seek advices from various sources through the years.

Friday will encourage your to make time together as a family and make lasting connections.

After going through each of these chapters, the reader might have questions.   Included in this book, you have a whole section titled Ask Dr. Leman where you can go through the days of the week and see topics and advices on communication and family dynamics, time/priorities/activities/work/finances, discipline and attitude, dad/mom/marriage, and family connection.   Dr. Leman takes the time to answer specific questions and will encourage you at the same time.

Finally, the book concludes with a whole chapter on the secrets of birth order for those who have not read the Birth Order book.

I think that every family can benefit in reading this book.  I even read some tidbits of it to my oldest son.    I hope that one day my kids families will be joyful and thriving as the years go by.    If you are tired of the bickering, the feelings being hurt, and the emotional exhaustion, this book might help you to turn your family around and transform it from the inside out.

Have a Happy Family by Friday is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The book is also available on Kindle.

What Follows After

9780800721206What Follows After
Written by Dan Walsh
Published at Revell

About the book

In 1962, life was simple, the world made sense, and all families were happy.

And when they weren't, everyone knew you were supposed to pretend.

For the past year, Scott and Gina Harrison have been living a lie. While they show up at family get-togethers in the same car, they've actually been separated for over a year. To keep up the charade, they've even instructed their sons, Colt and Timmy, to lie--to their grandparents, their teachers, and their friends.

Colt, for one, has had enough, so he hatches a plan. He and his little brother will run away from their Florida home, head for their aunt's house in Georgia, and refuse to come home until their parents get back together. But when things go terribly, terribly wrong, Scott and Gina must come to grips with years of neglect and mistrust in order to recover their beloved sons, their love for one another, and their marriage.
In this emotional story, bestselling author Dan Walsh takes you on a journey to rediscover the things that matter most in life--love, truth, and family. With profound insight into the heart of a hurting child, he reminds us that a time will come to look back on hard times and smile, because we'll know that what follows after . . . is not what we expected at all.

My Thoughts

Dan Walsh is definitively one of my favourite authors.   When I realized that a new book from him was available for review, I immediately checked out the description of the book.   I will admit that I hesitated before requesting it.  The story seemed to be a bit more emotional than his previous novels.  But I figure that since I really like the author it would be okay.

The story is fabulous though it can twist your own stomach when the dramatic events unfolds.   I don’t particularly like stories where children are in danger.  And this book, though the child is not armed, will give you a chill that will go down your spine if you are a parent.  I can’t even imagine how the parents in this novel dealt with it.   You can their thoughts every once in a while but just enough to make you read more.    The story of this book is intertwined with the events surrounding the Cuban situation back in the early 60s.

In all, I was hooked with the characters and the events of this book.  Though I do not want any children to go through what Timmy experienced, I think the book helped to be realistic in what could happen even to this day and time.   Though somehow you hear more about kidnapping nowadays then back then, you will wonder up to about four fifth of the book is they will find the child.

I won’t tell you the ending of the book.  But I will be honest in telling you that this novel from Dan Walsh was a bit harder to read for me – being a mom and all.    Even though I hesitated in requesting it, I am glad I read the book because I find that Dan Walsh writing is a delight for the eyes.

What Follows After is available at your favourite bookstore from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

You really are going to be okay. And it truly is possible to live with joy, resilience, and strength no matter what life brings. Yes, there will be hurt and hard times. But God wants to help you find ways to survive, grow stronger, and even thrive--no matter what happens.
With her trademark positive encouragement and probing questions for self-reflection, bestselling author Holley Gerth encourages you to spend less of your life stressing or regretting and more of your life truly living.

My Thoughts

The title itself reminded me something my husband and I used to say often in the early years of our marriage:

Everything is gonna be all right.

We still say it every once in a while as it has become one of our saying when things are tougher.  So the title attracted me to the book along with the fact that I had reviewed her two previous titles with Revell.

Once again Holley Gerth has found a way to help women to dig out the truth in their lives be writing a jewel of a book that will encourage the reader into seeking what is best for her.   Mind you, the author not only lift up the spirit of the reader but she also pushes you to take the time to think about the true words about yourself.   Here’s the thing – most women will eventually start believing the lies that the enemy wants them to hear.  But deep down, as a child of the Living God we don’t need to take these thoughts for reality because they are false.  Thoughts like “You never do anything right.” or “Nobody wants to spend time with you.”

These thoughts are not from God himself.  With the help of the guidance provided in this book, the reader will dig, search, and discover the truth about herself.   Throughout the book the author has included places for you to ponder and write down answers to specific questions like:

What was the situation you were in when you felt insecure?

What were you afraid would happen?

Why would it matter to you if that did happen?

The questions, if you take the time to answer, is the first step toward healing and learning to hear the truth about yourself.  Also included in this book, is a Go Deeper Guide which allow you as an individual or with a group of other women to study each chapter individually and dig deeper on your own journey.  The author is very encouraging through the pages of this book and only seek that everyone have healthy thoughts about themselves.

I think this is a fabulous book for all women in life as we have a tendency of believing the lies about ourselves.   This book will allow you to regret less and live truthfully.

Parenting Your Powerful Child

9780800720209Parenting Your Powerful Child
From Dr. Kevin Leman
Published at Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group

About the book

Don't let those cherublike faces fool you.

Your smart kids have an agenda--and they're workin' ya.

Powerful kids don't just happen. They're created, and their power comes in different packages. Whether loud and temperamental, quiet and sensitive, or stubborn and manipulative, powerful children can make living with them a challenge. But it doesn't have to be that way.
In Parenting Your Powerful Child, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman offers a practical action plan to redirect your child's power surges into positive traits that will prepare your child for a successful, happy, and productive adult life. With these simple but effective techniques, you can transform your home from a daily battle zone to a safe and peaceful place. All it takes is a little determination--and some small changes on your part--to make a huge difference in your family life.

Ready for the power struggle to end?

My Thoughts

As soon as I saw this new title from Dr. Leman, I knew that it would be good.   I will admit that when it comes to parenting Dr. Leman is one of my favourite author, alongside with Dr. James Dobson and Dr. Tim Kimmel.   So I didn’t hesitate one second to request this book last month.   I knew it was just a book that I needed to read.   I have seen power struggles while I shopped and I will admit that even in this household we do deal with powerful kids.   I have one that is very strong will and he can just know how to make your react.  Though this book is not about dealing with strong-willed children but instead it will give you guidance in how to identify the powerful child in your family and how to deal with it.

As I read this book, I could easily identify how a child can become powerful in a family.  Dr. Leman says that it doesn’t just happens.  Believe it or not, powerful children are created and that power comes in different packages.  You think that your child is too shy – it’s a form a power.   You think that your child is just plain stubborn – power again.  Somehow the child has developed this power by discovering he/she can get it his/her way if she acted a certain way.   The book will teach you how to channel these power surges into positive actions/traits that will help your child to become successful, happy and a productive adult later in life.

In all, you will find sixteen chapters in this book.  All of these are well written and you will easily understand what the author is saying as he doesn’t use complicated terms.

  • Chapter 1: The anatomy of a Powerful Child – understanding where power comes from.
  • Chapter 2: Power Comes in Different Packages.
  • Chapter 3: The Loud, Aggressive, Temperamental, Curveball Manipulator
  • Chapter 4: The Quiet, Shy, Sensitive, Walk-on-Eggshells Manipulator
  • Chapter 5: The Stubborn, Procrastinating Manipulator
  • Chapter 6: What Do Genes Have to Do with It? – discover how personalities in the nursery can predict how your child will be in 5, 10, 15 years.
  • Chapter 7: What Does Environment Have to Do with It?
  • Chapter 8: Raising Attila the Hun – in this chapter you will discover how parent unwittingly create powerful children…
  • Chapter 9: Why Kids Misbehave – Discover that deep down they have a goal.
  • Chapter 10: The Attention-Getting Kid
  • Chapter 11: Power-Driven or Determined? – how to determine the different and what can be done to use the power surges for your advantage
  • Chapter 12: You’re the Adult, They’re the Children – your background and your views of parenting
  • Chapter 13: What Kind of Kid Do You Want? – win-win suggestions to help
  • Chapter 14: Grace-Based Parenting – have a prodigal?  This chapter is for you!
  • Chapter 15: Rewiring Your Home – what you used to say and what you will say now
  • Chapter 16: Redirecting the Power Surge – how to encourage positive goals and help your child to use their drive for good purpose

You can glean beneficial information through the pages of this book.  Each chapter contains personal examples from the Leman family as well as testimonies from people who have applied the techniques of Dr. Leman in their relationship with their kids.   I find it beneficial to have these testimonies and discover how other people have dealt with some issues.   Also at the end of each chapter you will find a quick Power Point section that summarize the essential things that you need to remember. As I read this book, I could easily identify some of the power that my own kids have used in the past.   Even if my oldest is twelve years old and my youngest is five, I think I still have much to learn about parenting (should I mentioned that I am an only child?).   Our four kids are quite different from each others in personality, how they learn and how they deal with things.    Every day brings new challenges but I love these kids to pieces and want them to be accomplished adults later in life.   That’s why I am always trying to improve my parenting skills and having books like this one help me to attain this goal.

Thank you Dr. Leman for writing this book and encouraging me to persevere.   You are an inspiration for us as parents.   I am learning so much when I am reading one of your books.  I am looking forward to your next title. *grin*  Until then I will apply the techniques I have learned through the pages of Parenting Your Powerful Child

The Letters

PrintThe Letters – The Inn at Eagle Hill Book 1
Written by Suzanne Woods Fisher
Published at Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group

About the book

Welcome to a place of unconditional love and unexpected blessings

When widow Rose Schrock turns her Amish farmhouse into a bed and breakfast, she expects there might be problems. The reaction of her cantankerous mother-in-law for one. Disapproval from the church for another. But what she doesn't expect is that the guests at the Inn at Eagle Hill will spill their problems into her life and into her heart. She also never expects the kind of help and support she gets from Galen King, the quiet and rugged horse trainer next door. Love, Rose discovers, can bloom in the most unexpected ways.

With inspiration from a true story and her signature plot twists, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to Stoney Ridge for a fresh story of simple pleasures and strong faith in a complex world.

My Thoughts

In this new series from Suzanne Woods Fisher, we are transported into an Amish family who is struggling financially due to a tragic event in their life.   Not only did the dad died unexpectedly but they are now living with his mom who is experiencing health issues.   His widow, Rose, is doing her best to manage the kids and the farm and decides – with the blessings of her leaders – to open a Bed & Breakfast in order to be able to survive and repay her husband’s investors.

I had found the characters refreshing and different than other Amish novel – even with the hint of romance intertwined in the pages.   I am getting a bit tired of reading Amish romance novel but this particular title contains some mystery and interesting events that helped me to pursue my reading.   Yes there is love in this book but to see the character development is also fascinating.   I particularly liked Mim and her facts.    She was definitively an out-of-the-ordinary character for an Amish novel.    The life of this fmaily will be linked with a total stranger who needs some time alone to recuperate from an unplanned surgery and a disturbing event in her life.

My only disappointment in this book would be the cheating from the married husband and his sudden announcement of his departure from the family of the stranger living with the Amish.    I’m particularly sensitive to this kind of thing in books because I lived it myself when my dad announced he was leaving the family because of another woman.   I dislike that kind of mention in any book I encounter.   Nevertheless, I am pleased to say that the man comes back to his senses and realized how much important his wife is.   Wished it would have happened in my family but I know that God allowed this to happen so I can be a testimony for others.

Apart from this part of the book that I felt uneasy with, I find the story refreshing and encouraging.   It’s a good read for a summer week-end.

The Letters is available at your favourite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, even at amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The book is also available on Kindle and Kindle app.

Taylor’s Gift

9780800721886Taylor’s Gift – A Courageous Story of Giving Life and Renewing Hope
Written by Todd and Tara Storch with Jennifer Schuchmann
Published at Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group

About the book

The Storches are a truly amazing and inspiring family! They show beautifully how faith and hope can bring you through the toughest of times. Taylor’s Gift clearly shows that there can be a purpose in the pain.”-Carly Patterson, Olympic gold medalist It was the last run of their first day on the slopes, the beginning of another great family vacation for Todd and Tara Storch and their three children. But when thirteen-year-old Taylor’s life was tragically cut short in a skiing accident, the Storches were overcome by the devastating loss of their daughter. Still in shock, they were asked a question no parents ever think they will hear: “Would you be willing to donate Taylor’s organs?”

Their answer would change their family’s lives forever and provide comfort during their darkest moments. It would also save the lives of five desperate people anxiously waiting for a heart, a liver, a cornea, a pancreas, and a kidney.

Taylor’s death could have destroyed the Storches-and in some ways it almost did. Instead, her gift of life brought them strength, knowing her heart was continuing to beat. Taylor’s Gift is more than Taylor’s story, or even Todd and Tara’s story. It’s the story of a nurse who can now be an active mom and fully present for her kids, a cowboy who now has the strength and ability to give back to the community, a biker who can now give of himself completely, and a teenager who can now see her future for the first time.

It’s a story of finding strength in God and creating good even in the darkest times.

It’s a story of hope. Todd Storch is a successful consultant, public speaker, and community leader. After the death of his daughter, he began to pursue his new God-given mission to promote organ donation. Todd is cofounder and president of Taylor’s Gift Foundation, where he and his wife, Tara, work tirelessly to help those who have been touched by organ donation. Todd is honored to lead the foundation that has helped contribute to the registration of millions of new organ donors and is still changing the conversation about organ donation.

Tara Storch is first and foremost a mom, but she is also a sales and marketing professional, is active in her church, and is a community leader. Along with her husband, Todd, she cofounded Taylor’s Gift Foundation. She leads the marketing efforts of the foundation with the mission to “increase organ donation to Regift Life, Renew Health, and Restore Families.” She loves helping others recognize the beautiful gift we all have within.

Todd and Tara have shared their story on Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and other national media. They are the parents of Taylor, Ryan, and Peyton, and have made their home in Texas.

Jennifer Schuchmann specializes in collaborations with celebrities and newsmakers. Among her many books, she is coauthor with Kurt and Brenda Warner of the New York Times bestselling First Things First; with Dan Woolley of Unshaken, the only book written by a survivor of the Haiti earthquake; and with Jim Cymbala of Spirit Rising.

Outlive yourself.

My Thoughts

I was extremely touched and moved with this book.   Every chapter brought tears in my eyes and I felt the pain for this grieving family.   The cover of the book is illustrated by the picture of Taylor Storch, a beautiful young girl who was snatched from her family suddenly.   From the first chapter of the book until the end of it I was emotional and wondered how in the world have they gone through this ordeal and survive as a family.   I know that they were believers and learned to trust God but having a child close to the ages of Taylor myself I don’t know how I would react to a situation like this.

It was interesting to see how the two parents grieved differently and how the kids themselves had to deal with the sudden lost in their lives.   And to see the love and support that their community had for them, I am speechless.    This is what a community of believers can do to a grieving family.    This is what love is.  To be selfless and offer your services no matter what.

I also loves the inspiration poured through these pages in encouraging to become a organ donor.   I was also touched by the stories of the family meeting some of the recipients of Taylor’s organs.       Having testimonies on how this simple decision (though I am sure heartbreaking one as well) has changed the lives of individuals will touch you to the core of your soul.

Here’s a video about BeADonor.ca which is the Ontario site to register to become an organ and tissue donor.  In the US, I strongly suggest that you go to Taylorsgift.org.

In Ontario, one donor can help up to 8 recipients.    All it takes is a minute or two of your time and register.    It`s a decision you can make now which will inform your family of your decision if something happens to you.    A few years ago, I had signed the donor card when I renewed my driver’s license.  I always thought that because I signed the green card, I would be covered.  Not so.  The process of registering in Ontario is quite simple.  You will need to provide your health card number and answer some questions.

In the first screen, you will consent to help save lives by becoming an organ and tissue donor and you can specify which organs/tissue you are willing to donate.  The following screen will require you to confirm you registration and voilà!  It is that simple…

Having being touched by this book and discover that my little green card in Ontario wasn’t enough, I have decided to register officially as an organs and tissue donor.   If you are reading this and have not taken the time to do so yourself, I would like to encourage you to sign up at BeADonor.Ca in Ontario or at Taylorsgift.org in the US.  For other provinces or parts of the world, I would strongly suggest that you google organi donation and found how you can sign up to become a donor.   Be a blessing for someone else if something happens to you!  Sign up today!

Taylor’s Gift if available at your favourite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group,  even amazon.ca and amazon.com.  I`m warning you though… keep a tissue box next to you while you read it!

The book is also available on Kindle.

You’re Made for a God-Sized Dream

9780800720612You’re Made for a God-Sized Dream – Opening the Door to All God Has for You
Written by Holley Gerth
Published at Revell, a Baker Publishing Group division.

About the book

Hello, you . . . The one looking for more purpose and listening for God’s plan. Here’s what that restlessness is really all about: there’s a God-sized dream knocking on the door of your heart. Before you think that sounds too big, let me assure you, God-sized dreams aren’t really about size at all. They’re about the desires God places within you that perfectly fit your heart. God-sized dreams are an essential part of who you’re created to be and what you’re called to do. They lead to more meaning, joy, and connection with the One who gave them to you. In the busyness of life, it’s easy to ignore them or let fear shut them out. But this is your moment. Now is your time. The “more” your heart is longing for has been there all along. Let’s open the door to all God has for you together.

With this life-changing message, Holley Gerth invites you to discover the dreams God has given you-and then dare to pursue them. She takes you by the heart and says, “Yes! You can do this!” and guides you forward with a loving hand. Along the way, she provides insightful questions and offers action plans that will help you take the next steps toward making the deepest desires of your heart a reality.

My Thoughts

Last year, I had the opportunity to review a previous title from Holley Gerth – You’re Already Amazing – which I absolutely adored.   So when I got offered You’re Made for a God-Sized Dream, I expected to be swept off the ground with what I read.   Not so.   Don’t take me wrong, I am sure the book could be fabulous for someone wondering what they can do in life.  But for me at this point in time where I believe that I am doing what I was called to do – homeschooling my kids and being involved in a healing ministry – the book is a little bit redundant.

The author is helping people to discover their strengths and will guide the reader in discovering what they are passionate about.   You will find places to jolt down answers to questions and reflections in order to help you find the God-Sized Dream of yours. You will be encourage to fulfill this dream and go deeper in a special guide that you can download from her website.

As I was reading the first chapter, I had trouble with a specific section in it.

The people in your life may not always like that you’re following your dream.  They may even whine about it from time to time.   But not pleasing people isn’t the same as being selfish.  You don’t have to make everyone in your life happy – the only thing you must do is be obedient.

My problem with these lines is that the author doesn’t cover the situation of marriage.  What if following your dream cause a stain in your relationship with the man you are married?  To the point that it can cause separation or divorce…   Sometimes your spouse might not be at the same level as you for this kind of things – especially i f it’s a huge dream of yours.   I would say that you need to talk about it with your spouse and decide together how to go ahead with it.   Communications is very important between spouses.

Mind you not all dreams are extreme so I am certain that most situations won’t cause marital problems.   And the book is a good guide to help you discover where you could flourish.    I would encourage young women who don’t know what to do in life to check out this book.   It could be also useful for older women who feels as though they don’t have purpose in life.   But beware that it’s not just a book that you read, you will have “homework” to do in it in order to discover your calling.

You’re Made for a God-Sized Dream is available at your favourite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, even amazon.ca and amazon.com

The book is also available for the Kindle.

The Way of the Wise

9780800721572The Way of the Wise – Simple Truths for Living Well
Written by Dr. Kevin Leman
Published at Revell

About the book

Want to live a satisfying life? Figure out your purpose on the planet? Leave a powerful legacy?

In The Way of the Wise, New York Times bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman reveals ten life-changing principles-all packed in six amazing little verses by the wisest man of all, King Solomon. They have everything to do with who you are, where your heart is, who you think God is, and who you want to become.

This compact book is crafted to jump-start or revitalize your life by unlocking the secrets of those ten powerful principles. It’ll give you hope, courage, inspiration, a fresh perspective, and lots of humor along the way-all in an easily readable package.

“This book is for all those who believe in the almighty guy ‘up there,’ those who aren’t sure, and those, like me, who took a long while to be convinced,” Dr. Leman says.

No matter where you are on your journey in life, you can take the way of the wise.

My Thoughts

The book opens on a specific scripture in the Bible.  Actually, more like a specific part of a specific scripture in the Bible.

Do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years
     and bring you prosperity.
Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
     bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
     and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
                                                     Proverbs 3:1-6

Words packed with wisdom coming straight from God’s Word.   How can we not ponder on these verses on a daily basis?  Dr. Kevin Leman has taken the time to decorticate these verses in order to give us life-changing principles that will help us to have a more fulfilled life.    Chapter by chapter he takes a section of these scriptures and expand on the meaning of it.    Chapter by chapter you will discover more about God and who you can become with His daily guidance.    The book was a refreshing read and a great encouragement for me.   I have discovered stories from Dr. Leman and see my third son through his stories.   I am hoping that I can make as strong of an impact on him like Dr. Leman’s mom had on him when he was growing up.

Actually, I love the fact that his mom has written these verses in his Bible when he was younger.   My youngest son just received his own Bible recently since he was able to read independently.  It’s a tradition in our household – as soon as you can read alone, you get your own Bible.   I am proud of him for taking the time to read each morning in it and take the time to soak in God’s Word.    I’ve been pondering about what to write in his Bible and I love the idea of highlighting this Scripture and writing a little note for him.

This book is easy to carry around and could easily by tucked in a purse for reading on the bus or while waiting at a dental appointment.   It is packed with wisdom and fun stories that will make you realize that to live well in life you only have to follow simple principles found in the Bible.   At the end of each chapter, Dr. Leman will also nudge you in pondering more on the words you have read by encouraging you to reflect on your life with a couple of questions.  I got reminded that I don’t have to fear when God is there, that moving requires a heartfelt commitment, that He loves me (even with my mistakes and my errors), that each day is a gift and it all depends on how I spend it, that with God it’s 100 percent of trust, 100 percent of commitment and 100 percent of my heart, that it’s better to be a person of character, that trust is an on-going relationship, that God wants the whole enchiladas not just bits and pieces, that I have to act to acknowledge Him, and finally that twists and turns on the path of life are not to be feared but they represent new directions and new opportunities.

All I can say is thank you Dr. Leman for writing this thoughtful book that is an encouragement for the reader.  I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to live a satisfying life.
