Three years of adventure and discovery

My adventure with the TOS Homeschool Crew is officially completed.

It has been a marvelous journey but my attention is called somewhere else.   I will continue to review books/products on this site and will pursue my certificate in Social Media as well.   Homeschooling is a priority in our family and already I look forward for next year where I will have a preschooler, a grade one, a grade 2 and a grade 5.    I intend to plan a schedule that will be adequate for us over the summer.

I have also marked in BOLD BLUE the products that I particularly loved and consider like gems for homeschoolers.

So Long, Farewell

00Well, I have posted my last review for the TOS Homeschool Crew.

I won’t be returning next year for various reasons.   I am leaving the boat in good terms.

I have enjoyed my two years and a half with the crew.  I received wonderful products that we will be using throughout the years to come.   I have made wonderful friends and hope to meet with them one of these days.

I have being blessed beyond measure during these few years.

My biggest blessing was went I embarked in Feb 2010 and received my first product.   I knew I had to incorporate geography in our homeschool but buying wasn’t possible.   And I received the Olde Wold Maps from Homeschool in the Woods.  I cried.    Since then God has opened up more doors to receive other geography products as well as products to study the human anatomy.

Embarking on the crew that first year back in 2008, I didn’t know what to expect.   I re-discovered a passion to write to let people know about things… products and books more specifically.    When I was in high school I was part of the newspaper and wrote about the events that were happening on a weekly basis.   Simple and accurate.

The journey was fantastic and as I reflect on it, I realize that God is guiding me through it.   This year, I have been asked to become a regular blogger on Woodall’s and I take the time to write about camping and activities you can do with kids.   Love it!   I am also going through a Certificate on Social Media at Algonquin College which is fantastic.  I am excited to see what is in store for the months/years to come.

So to all my crew mates since the past three years, I say farewell and leave you this little song from the Song of Music.

Visit me here at Canadianladybug Reviews!, at Life at Oak Grove and on Woodall’s.

You can find me on facebook and twitter too!

Until we meet one of these days I say to you all

So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodnight, Adieu, Good Bye!

Eagle's Wings

CGCConsidering God’s Creation
Published at Eagle’s Wings

As my last review for the TOS Homeschool Crew (yes I have arrived to the end of my adventure…).  Oh!  Where is that box of kleenex when you need it… Sniff… sniff…

And as my last product to review in an homeschool environment, I have receive Considering God’s Creation.   I must admit that I didn’t know what to expect.   I knew that other crew members were hyper excited (to say the least…) about it.

When I received the product, I immediately decided to check it out.   At first, I was disappointed to have received only one student textbook but after looking into it, I quickly discovered that I was allowed to make photocopies of the student pages for each kids in my family.    I love reproducible products.   It makes it easier for a family of four kids…

Considering God’s Creation is a in-depth study of natural science from a biblical perspective.   This curriculum is adaptable for Grades 2-7.  Two of my kids participated to the product testing and enjoyed the lessons with me; Alexandre who is completing grade 4 and Dominic who is finishing grade 1.  I also have received the teacher’s manual and the CD that will accompany the lessons.

Throughout the book, your kids will learn more about creation, the universe, the solar system, the stars, the Earth, light, atmosphere, rocks and minerals, weather, clouds, sound, wind, plants, insects, spiders, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, amphibians, the animal anatomy and physiology, the food chain, the animal reproduction, the animal instincts, vision and brains as well as everything relation to the human body – reproduction, cell, skeletal system, digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, nervous system, integumentary system, endocrine system and muscular system.   With over 272 pages, your children will have a beautiful book at the end to show off.

To be honest, I find that each lesson is quite descriptive and easy to follow.  As a teacher, you won’t have to worry about missing something because everything is laid out for you.   Each lesson start with a preparation section which indicates what will be needed for the lessons. Then the vocabulary section introduces new words and their definition to the students. The text contains an introduction, activity, a song/poem (sometimes), work to be done in the notebook, Bible readings, a review section which will allow the students to answer some questions as well as a digging deeper. The digging deeper section is more than likely there for older student. Bu the time a lesson arrives to the review section, I know that my younger son was getting fidgety and his attention span was reduce. But for my oldest, I used some of the activities included in the digging deeper section.   In all there are 36 six lessons in this curriculum.

I have included some samples of the work of my two kids below so you can visualize some of the lessons included in this book.

Dominic, age 7 (left side)  and Alexandre, age 9 (right side)

Thinking about where we are compare to the Universe. Dominic wanted to personalize it with Canadian information in it so I change the information a bit for him…

5-23-2011 11;54;07 AM5-23-2011 11;58;32 AM

As you can see there is a lot of hands-on activities while going through the lessons.   Every time I tell the boys that we will be doing a lesson from Considering God’s Creation they react positively to it.   They are excited to discover more about our Creator through this curriculum.    Not only do they learn via the activities included but also while I read the scriptures linked to the lesson with them.

Alexandre’s thoughts – grade 4

I like it because it’s fun, cool and has verses from the Bible.   And we learn about things that we didn’t know.

Dominic’s thoughts – grade 1

I like it because I get to color the pages.    I love drawing and these lessons allow me to do this at the same time.

I am also very excited about going through this curriculum with them.   I find the section that is harder to grab their attention longer is the Bible Reading.  But you can have the kids participate by asking them to read some of the readings.  That way they also practice their reading while doing the lessons…

I find this curriculum to be an absolute must for every Christian homeschoolers.   I highly recommend it for everyone wanting to study God’s creation and linking it to biblical content.   I think you will be pleasantly surprised and satisfied with it.   I know I am quite pleased.

The price is quite reasonable for the curriculum.  You will get the student workbook, the teacher’s guide and the CD for 29.95$ US.   Additional workbooks are available if you don’t feel like making photocopies for the price of 13.95$ each.    However, like I mentioned earlier the workbook is reproducible for children of a same family.

Disclaimer: Thanks to Eagle’s Wings for sending me to above mentioned products for review purpose through the TOS Homeschool Crew. I was not monetarily compensated for this review. Talking Fingers–Wordy Qwerty

Earlier during this year of the this TOS Homeschool Crew, I had the opportunity to review their product title Read, Write & Type.   We were very impressed with it and curious about the new level program called Wordy Qwerty.

Imagine my delight when at the end of my third year with the crew, I have the opportunity to explore and discover Wordy Qwerty with my oldest son.   Originally I had registered my two oldest sons for this review but we quickly discovered that it was a bit too advance my my struggling reader.   However, as I write this review, I think that my 2nd son would be ready to go ahead with it.   For some reasons, he prefers to stick with the Read, Write & Type program.  So I asked my son, Alexandre who is 9 years old, to product test the Wordy Qwerty for the purpose of this review.

imageAbout the Product

The creators of the Talking Fingers approach have based their program on a simple idea: text is speech made visible!   On a daily basis we use our mouths to talk and we use our fingers (with a pencil or keyboard) to represent those words on paper. So when children learn to link speech sounds with letters while using the alphabet to write any word they can say their fingers are "talking".

Wordy Qwerty – Foundations for Reading and Writing Fluency will  take  children ages 7-9 year olds through the next steps of reading and writing fluency.   This program picks up where Read, Write & Type leaves off.   So in a way, it is a wonderful continuity for the kids.

After successfully completing Read, Write & Type, most kids ages 6-7 year olds are able to write any word they can say.  However, they may not spell them all correctly.  Wordy Qwerty will help them to learn the spelling conventions and how words are constructed in English. (To be honest, I almost wish a similar program would exists for French…!)

The authors of the program explain the purpose of it this way;

The overall purpose of Wordy Qwerty: Foundations for Reading and Writing Fluency, is to improve phonological and morphological sensitivity, to develop a deeper understanding of how words are constructed in English, and to provide reading and writing activities with helpful feedback, in order to increase fluency and comprehension in reading and writing.

In all 20 lessons are included in Wordy Qwerty.

  1. Silent E
  2. Sounds of C
  3. Sounds of G
  4. J or DGE
  5. W or WH
  6. C or K
  7. CK or K
  8. CKS or X
  9. CH or TCH
  10. LL, SS, FF, ZZ
  11. OI or OY
  12. VE Words
  13. Open Syllables
  14. Double Consonants
  15. Doubling rule
  16. ER, IR, OR, UR, EAR
  17. I Before E
  18. Plurals: Add ES
  19. Plurals: Y to IES
  20. Plurals: F to VES

For each of the lesson, the child will go through 6 different activities.

step1Patterns Children generate two lists of words by typing the names of pictures and sorting the words by a given characteristic. They are directed to notice the patterns," or spelling rules, by comparing the two lists. If they can't sound out the words or spell them correctly, the Helping Hands will assist them. Qwerty and Midi talk about the differences between the two lists and derive the 20 spelling rules which then are woven into the lyrics of delightful songs.

step2Karaoke Rhymes and songs are memorable and fun. There is a catchy song about each of the 20 spelling rules. Children read the lyrics on the screen and can sing along if they want. Often the lyrics contain examples of the words that reflect the spelling rule. Children are motivated to read the words while the song is playing, or while they are singing it themselves.

step3Recycler Lots of words that rhyme can be made just by changing the first letter or letters of the word. Some words sound the same, or rhyme, but use a different combination of letters to represent the same sound. In this game, chidren learn different vowel combinations that can make the long vowel sound. They watch the RECYCLER drum whirl as it changes the first letter(s) of two rhyming words. They learn to quickly distinguish real words from non-words. The non-words are vacuumed away. Players that score less than 90% on the first try are asked to study the list of real words. If any are not familiar, they can click on the word and hear it used in a sentence. Then they are asked to play the game again.

step4Pop-a-Word  "Outlaw" words are best memorized by learning to recognize them quickly. In this arcade-type game, children find words in a 4 word phrase as each word appears briefly, along with non-target words, in a cluster of colorful balloons. As children click on the correct balloons, they "pop". The faster they recognize the correct words, the more points they make.

step5Write Stories In these cleverly illustrated 8-line rhymes, children hear and see the first line, and have to type out the second line after it is dictated. They can see and hear the dictated line as often as they need, but get more points if they remember the sentence and try to spell the words correctly. These little stories are full of words that require using the spelling rule just presented.

step6Read Stories  Here are some short, engaging stories that develop comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Every so often, there is a word missing, and children have to choose among three possible words, the word that best fits the meaning of the sentence. These stories also include words that utilize the spelling rule, or the "outlaw" words learned in that lesson.

These activities becomes repetitive with time as they are the same for each lessons.   For a child who is struggling with learning repetitive is wonderful but for a child like my oldest son it gets to the point where the fun is reduce as you progress.   He enjoyed playing with Wordy Qwerty but it was a bit easy for him.    However as you progress, the levels of difficulty and the rapidity of the activities is increased.    Having a new instrument being unveiled once you complete a section is very motivating for the child.

My son’s comments

I like Wordy Qwerty.   My favorite part is seeing the musical instrument play. With the points we earn, it would be nice to be able to “buy” things (virtually).

Wordy Qwerty is different that Read, Write & Type as you do not have the possibility to print an award as your progress.   However, the progression is visualized as the building of the musical instruments is completed.    Wordy Qwerty has guided my son through the spelling of words and through it I even learned new English words I didn’t know.   For example, in the Recycler, I have learned how some words that I didn’t know are used in a sentence.    (In case you are wondering, English is my second language… I was born and raised in French!)  The program is fantastic but to be honest the pricing scheme for the online is not conducive for family like ours.  With four kids it would cost us too much….   I know we can always buy the CD version but the online version is nice as well as you can access it anywhere you are.    I would suggest that a family pricing be considered in the future to help homeschoolers to access these program onlines.

Also as a suggestion for the future, I think that both programs should be converted to become iPad apps. We would definitively consider purchasing the iPad version of both apps if it was reasonably priced.   It would be fantastic to have these on the go while we are travelling.   I see enormous potential in these programs and I think it would be very advantageous to make them available for portable devices like the iPad.

Go Trybe

image

Are you ready for some exercises?    Willing to spend about 20 minutes to pump up and get in shape with the help of enthusiastic trainers?

If so come and join us at GoTrybe… you will be amazed by this online service for your homeschool kids. GoTrybeGroups

For the purpose of this review, I was given access to the ZooDoos which is geared fro kids from Kindergarten to grade Five.   There are also two other options with Trybe180 for grades 6 to 8 as well as nextrybe for grades 9 to 12.

But what is GoTrybe?   In simple terms it is an online fitness and nutrition community that would delivers daily fitness, nutrition, wellness, and motivation content to your children.

image

On of the first things you will have to do after you register for GoTrybe will be to create you avatar.   An avatar is a character that you can design to represent you.   Having four kids in the family, they all wanted to have their own avatar.   I think it would be fantastic to have a family avatar and design a group of avatars together to represent us.   At first we were switching from one to the other but at one point I got tired of doing this… and we selected an avatar for mom instead.   You can change the skin color, hair style, hair color, facial features, clothing, accessories and more.   Eventually, you can add upgrades and options like special shoes, pets, and outrageous hairstyle for examples.

Once you have selected and dressed your avatar, you can choose your daily workout.  The first item you will select will be the warm up.   Then the cardio section will contain three selections.   At the end you will have to ass a strength and a flexibility elements.  The total of time spend for the level we were at was about 22 minutes or so depending of our selections.    For each categories (warm up, cardio, strength and flexibility), you have numerous choices of videos to choose and mix together.   In the end, you can have a variety of training session for your kids.

I was very curious about this service and to be honest with you I am quite impressed with it.   I only wish that we have more space in our living room…  The kids are always enthusiast to do exercises with GoTrybe.    When I tell them we will do it today, they ran upstairs to change in workout clothes – even my three years old follow the lead of her older brothers…   Below are some pictures I took of the kids doing some sessions on GoTrybe.   As you can see the first set of pictures show the two sofas in the living room.   The space is manageable but a bit tight for four kids.

IMG_6522IMG_6527

One day, one of the sofas had to get repaired… (long story but I will tell you that it was covered by the warranty!) Our space dramatically changed for the GoTrybe session as you can see.   The kids had much fun to exercise and to have fun at the same time.   I find that my two oldest kids were more dedicated in following the instructions than my two youngest but all of them enjoyed GoTrybe.

IMG_6595IMG_6600

IMG_6602IMG_6605

After you complete your fitness workouts, answer the daily nutrition, wellness and motivational questions correctly, you are awarded points.   The points are used to rank users on the site and can be spent on clothing, accessories, or customization of you avatar.

My kids enjoyed discovering Zoodoos from GoTrybe and have a blast every time I put it on.  Here’s some comments that my oldest have written about it.

I think that it is fun and a great way to move your body.  We (my siblings and I) really like that we can buy things with points.   My little sister who is 3 wants to make sure that we get some earrings and necklaces.   She also insist on the color PINK!

Now that I have picked your curiosity for this online fitness and nutrition community, you must be wondering how much does it cost right?   Well, first of all you can try it for free by using the GETFIT promotional code.    This will gives you access to GoTrybe for one day.    Personally I would prefer to try it out for a longer period than that like a week or even a month.   But it will give you an idea on how GoTrybe works.    Once you decide to register, the one year membership is 19.95$ (apparently regularly it is 39.95$).

In a nutshell, the service is innovative and will make the kids get up and move.    The leaders on the video provides interesting information about nutrition as well.    The price is reasonable for the one year membership.    I would tend to consider it at 19.95$.  However, if it would go back to the regular price, I would not consider purchasing this service as I think it is too expensive.     As homeschoolers, we have to consider where the money goes in our yearly budget.    I would even suggest that GoTrybe consider putting a homeschool price as well as the possibility to put a group of avatars available for homeschoolers.   It would make it more fun to dress up avatars for all my kids I think.

MonKi See

image

As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I have received an interesting DVD and a book from Monki See.   I had the opportunity to review a DVD and a book from Monki See.BFW-dec10-450x389b

Geared for kids from birth to age 3, the Monki See Baby’s First Words will expose your child to familiar words.    From body parts to well known words in the younger ages, the word are presented with the help of puppets, animals, chidren as well as Howie and Skip the two animated monkeys of the series.   This DVD will enhanced the vocabulary of your child and will help him/her to learn the written language of 40 words.   In all, your child will be entertained during the 30 minutes of the DVD.   Also included on the DVD is a 40 word slide show to revise the words learned.   You will also find a parent guide included to help you get started.

The book titled Know Your Monkey is a short, rhyming story that goes with the DVD and will teach the young children to identify body parts on their favorite monkeys while learning about their own bodies.  While going through this book, you can ask your child to identify the body parts on his own body at the same time.   It is a great way to get him/her interact during the reading of the story.   'See and Say Stories' are specifically arranged to display large text while keeping the illustrations separate in order to naturally direct the child’s attention to the written word.   This cute little book will revise about 29 words from the video.

image

My daughter, Jasmine, is above this level of learning.   She enjoyed the DVD but to be honest she already knew her body part.   But the originality of presenting the information as well as the use of children and puppets grabbed her attention.     I think that the DVD is well done and help the child to interact during the learning time.    Nothing can stop you to ask your child to identify his own body part while watching it.

It was recommended that the child watch the video once a day for a period of time.   To be honest, I don’t particularly like this option since I try to limit the television viewing as much as I can.    But we watched it a few times and Jasmine enjoyed it.   However, being in a homeschool environment, I find that she wants to work from a book as well when we have school time.

Other DVDs alvailable are All About Colors and All About Shapes.

The products are on sale right now with the DVD being priced at $19.95 and the book at  9.95$.

Yesterday’s Classics

image

Being part of the TOS Homeschool Crew, you never know in advance what will be assigned to you.   This year, I had more than my share of online reviews.    I also got some pdf files as well.   I don’t mind pdf documents as it also means that I can use the document with my four kids.    But one product I didn’t know would excite me and be a blessing to our family was Yesterday’s Classics.

Yesterday's Classics republishes classic books for children in high-quality paperback editions. These books, first published in the golden age of children's literature from 1880 and 1920 and long out of print, are reprinted in modern easy-to-read type for today's readers.   History, literature, biography, nature, and faith are their specialties. Dedicated to serving families that follow the classical and Charlotte Mason models of education, they republish titles long out of print in reasonably-priced high-quality paperback editions.  They carefully select for republication the best of the books first published a century ago when a Christian worldview and high standards of literary excellence were the norm.

To say the least, Yesterday's Classics is your headquarters for the best classic literature for children. They have republish classic books for children from the golden age of children's literature, the era from 1880 to 1920. Many of the titles offered have been out of print for decades and so have been hard to find. Now today’s children can enjoy these books that delighted generations of children at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Yesterday Classics not only offers the books on paperbacks but they also have the books on EPUD or KINDLE editions as well!

I didn’t know what to expect. Literally.   I knew I had the choice between the EPUB or Kindle edition.    But when I saw the quantity of books I have received to review, I felt overwhelmed.    I discovered little gems in history books from several civilizations, including Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Middle Ages, and Great Britain , works of classic literature include poetry and hero tales as well as a number of nature books.    Through the numerous books that I have uploaded on our iPad (EPUB edition), I have discovered some that I can have one of my sons read to me to practice his reading.   Together we were able to discover beloved characters I had read about when I was younger.    He was excited to have his own books to read on the iPad.   And to see him being able to read the story and enjoy it at the same time was precious to me.    He had worked so hard since September to be able to become more independent.   In the last month or so, we realize that he is blooming in the area of reading.   So for him to be able to take one of the Yesterday’s Classics books on the iPad and read it is a huge accomplishment.

We also started one that is called Grammar-Land.   While reading this story, the kids get introduced to the basics rules of grammar in the English language.    I can see numerous use for these titles whether they are about science or history.    Numerous books included in this list will be a wonderful addition in our history lessons.   Others titles I am planning to use while camping will be geared more toward nature.    I am still speechless with all the good books included in this deal.   Honestly, if someone would teach based on the classic literature, that person would be blown away with the quantity of titles offered by Yesterday’s Classics.

I also received the Kindle files which I am planning to use on a regular PC since we don’t have a Kindle device with us.   I am planning to install the Kindle software on the PC in the school room and use the books as part of our curriculum next year – especially with my 10 years old son who will be in grade 5.

The EPUB or Kindle Files are available for the price of 99.95$.   You will  own all the Yesterday’s Classics Books (225 books) for that price!   See a list of all the books at  http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/catalog/catalogepubbytitle.php.

Note for users of the Kindle app who would be interested in purchasing this product: The Kindle Edition won’t work on the iPad/iPhone. You need to purchase the EPUB edition for this.

The End of an Adventure - TOS Homeschool Crew

In 2008, I was blessed to be accepted into the first The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s Crew program.  I had the privilege to review homeschool products while taking my first steps in the world of homeschooling.  During the 2nd year, (2009-2010) I didn’t return but in the middle of the year (in February 2010 to be exact) I was  asked to come back and continue my journey with the crew.    In 2010-2011 I was back on board but this time as a First Mate.

A wind of change has blown in my sails.

Next year, I am not returning on the TOS Homeschool Crew for various reasons.   I had originally applied but realized afterward that I needed a break so I informed the ladies leading the crew not to consider me after all.

I don’t know where God is leading me at this point.   I had made wonderful contact with companies here in Canada and will continue to review with specific publishers in the US as well.    I will also continue to seek out and find new products to reviews.  I am also a regular blogger on the Woodall’s blog which is specialized on RVing.

I am also studying to complete a certificate in Social Media at Algonquin College.  It is a distance education certificate so technically anyone anywhere in the world can take it.
Some crew mates had listed the various products they have reviewed during the past three years.  I’ve decided to do the same.

As I wrap up the last few reviews, I am considering what a blessing it has been to be part of the crew for these three years.   I have discovered wonderful homeschool products along the way, made wonderful friends in the US and abroad which I hope to meet one day, re-discovered a love for writing which made me explore more opportunities of reviewing books and products and new adventures opening to me.  I am grateful to have been part of the crew and wish all my former crew mates a wonderful time whether they are returning or not.   I will miss you all on the board but hope to see you around facebook, twitter and other places on the blogosphere.   Farewell for now and I hope to see you all one of these days!  In the meantime, let’s have a group hug.

Science Weekly

Being a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew I always look forward to which products I will receive next.    This year I had the privilege to discover a product that I never heard before called Science Weekly.

I was curious about the product as my kids are getting more and more into the age of discovering science.   Now, please note that I loved biology when I was younger but chemistry and physics didn’t go well with me.    I survive though and I am willing to discover anything that would help me teach science to me kids.

So one bright February day, I received through the mail (regular mail that is) the Science Weekly pages.   What is Science Weekly?   Well it is a supplementary instructional tool that will help your child to enhance his/her skills in science, math, reading and writing.   Yes contrary to the name of the product, it isn’t just all about science in the issues you will receive.

Notice I said the word issues.  Why?  Simply because you will receive on a weekly basis an issue on the theme covered.    As part of our product testing, I have received The teacher’s guide as well as the issues for grades K-6 on the subject of the flu.    Interestingly enough, when I received these documents, there was a small outbreak going on in our city.  Fortunately for us, nobody in the family had to deal with the flu this year…

The Kindergarten level includes vocabulary and tracing letters, discovering how a sneeze can pass the flu to someone else, a time activity on how long you need to wash your hands as well as coloring, placing in order some images and a story telling time.

The grade 1 level is a bit more explicit in the description on how a sneeze can pass the flu to someone else and in the activities like vocabulary (rhymes), mathematics (signing the alphabet and timing how long it takes), writing  and more.

The grade 4 level contains even more information and the activities are harder to do.   For example, the vocabulary section has a word bank and sentences to fill in the blanks.    The weekly lab is also more complicated to performed and there is even a writing assignment to complete.

These were the three levels we did as I had a child in each of these grades.   However, I also took the time to look into the grades 2, 3 and 5-6 of the science weekly I had received.    As you might have realize, as the child is higher in grade level, the document will contain more information on the topic, harder exercises to do as well as a more complete science project.     The topics for the year 2010-2011 include pulleys, cats, the flu, glass, fractions, composting, the science of movies, the science of money, scuba diving, poisonous animals, caves, teeth, deserts, green buildings as well as the moon.

The teacher’s guide will present all the various levels available on the topic and help you to guide your child in learning more on the subject covered.   I found that it contained enough information for me to be able to assist my young scientist on his weekly discovery.

img_science_weekly_magMy two youngest sons enjoyed doing their pages but found them a little bit easy.   My oldest son, who is in grade 4, probably had more fun to do his sheet than the younger ones.    He was able to discover more about the flu and how it can affect your life if  you get sick with it.   The experiment was also more challenging and the exercises more interesting.  Personally, if I had to choose a level to purchase I would go with the higher grades as if would also provide more information on the topic covered.

To discover Science Weekly, you can visit their website and download the pages on the topic of coral reef.  Go to  http://www.scienceweekly.com/downloads.html to access the files.

Each Science Weekly you will receive contain 4 pages and will be delivered through your mailbox on a weekly basis.  Science Weekly is available for the price of  19.95$ per student per year which includes 15 issues.    Considering that there are six levels available, I would strongly suggest that you combine levels together when ordering for a family with multiple children.    If not it would get expensive in the end…

KinderBach

Every now and then you discover a product that is out of the ordinary.   I guess it helps a lot to be part of a group like the TOS Homeschool Crew since we get the opportunity of reviewing online and physical products throughout the year.

This is our 2nd experience with KinderBach and I am not disappointed with it.   Back in 2009, my boys were 4, 5 and 7 and they enjoyed every minute they spent on KinderBach.

This time around, my oldest son who is soon to be ten didn’t feel the need of sitting with his younger brothers and sister (ages 3, 5 and 7) to watch the KinderBach lesson.  However, my youngest three enjoyed spending time together and learning more about music.

KinderBach is unique in itself has it uses songs, games and puzzles to teach the children aged 3 to 7 about music.    Ideally, you should have a piano at home but with the digital world these days, you can download a free piano app on for the iPad and still learn with KinderBach.

Using the piano keyboard as the base, you will be introduce to a unique neighbourhood where the characters will help your child to discover the notes and the music elements.

The founder of the program has extensive background in music education, singing, visual arts, keyboarding theory as well as dramatic.   She demonstrate all these skills via the innovative concept of early childhood music she has created with KinderBach.

Currently available are six levels of learning.   Each levels will give more music lessons for your child as they watch it.    The image below illustrate how a week is presented.   Throughout the week, the child can watch the lesson multiple times and also do fun activities that will anchor the learning experience.

The learning activities will sometimes ask the child to color or write information on the sheet of paper.   My three younger kids had a blast learning with Dodi and his friends and discovering the musical world.     However, I find that the parent should also spend time with the younger kids to help them follow the directions

KinderBach is fun and will help your kids to learn music.   I would consider getting the online version if I had only one child but if your family has more than one child, I would strongly recommend to go toward the DVDs.

KinderBach is available for the price of $95.88 US annually or $19.99 US monthly or you could purchase the DVDs for $222.88 US for levels 1 to 6.

Zeezok Publishing z-guide to the Movies

FlyBoys

As a member of the TOS Homeschool crew, I am bound to discover interesting products that could be used in our homeschool.    And this time around, I think the publisher has discover an interesting niche to incorporate media in the study of a specific event like in our case World War I.

I had the opportunity to chose the z-guide to the Movies e-book I wanted and since I had the movie Flyboys at home I decided to request its z-guide to the Movies.  However, this specific title is mostly geared to high school level.   My kids being too young (3, 5, 7 and almost 10) for this particular movie, I reviewed it keeping in mind that this would be an interesting product for the future.    The topics covered in this z-guide to the Movies are World War I, facing uncertainty/death, racial prejudice and aeronautics.

Before I explain what the z-guide to the Movies is, I want to give a little synopsis of the movie Flyboys.  Flyboys soars to new cinematic heights with spectacular special effects and thrilling, edge-of-your-seat aerial dogfights. Inspired by the true story of the legendary Lafayette Escadrille, this action-packed epic tells the tale of America’s first fighter pilots. These courageous young men distinguish themselves in a manner that none before them had dared, becoming true heroes who experience triumph, tragedy, love, and loss amid the chaos of World War I. Join Cassidy, Rawlings, and the other pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille in their highly-manoeuvrable aircraft as they battle the German “knights of the air” high above the French countryside. Aside from the occasional chivalrous act, this war among the clouds was every bit as brutal as the conflict on the ground. With an average life expectancy of three-six weeks, these American pilots risked life and limb for France over a year before the United States joined the Allies. Flyboys_DVD_Cover

In a nutshell, the Zeezok Publishing’s z-guide to Flyboys  contains a topic overview, movie synopsis, and ten learning activities. Through these your teenager will be able to study the film as well as the period of time when the event happened.   The topic overview puts the film in its historical context providing with the student and its teacher information that they might not know yet.   Before watching the movie, it is suggested that the synopsis of the story be read.  This one-page synopsis contains more information than what you usually find in the back of the movie case.

The student will watch the movie once and then take the time to answer the review question related to the movie.  This specific assignment encourages the student to become an active learner.  I find that knowing that a series of question awaits us after watching the movie, our mind is more attentive to “digest” the story.   Other activities will require research to be done at the library or on the internet, creating a personal identification insignia to be painted on your aircraft,  discover more about the aircraft used by the Lafayette escadrille by researching on it, write an essay on being or not being a World War I fighter pilot, have a bit of fun with a crossword, design an original recruitment poster, learn more about the German zeppelins, interesting questions that will make you think hard before answering,  and a little study on the art of filmmaking.

The whole z-guide to the movie Flyboys can be covered within a week with the following schedule.

Day 1:  Activity 1 Movie Review Questions and 2 More about the Lafayette Escadrille

Day 2: Activity 3 World War Map and 4 More on the Nieuport Aircraft Flown by the Lafayette Escadrille

Day 3: Activity 5 Do you have the Courage to Be a World War I pilot? and 6 Crossword Puzzle

Day 4: Activity 7 Recruitment Poster for the Lafayette Escadrille and 8 The Dirigibles as a Weapon of War

Day 5: Activity 9 Worldview and 10 The Filmmaker’s Art

This is definitively a packed week on the subject and it can be adapted to become a two week schedule if you want.

Also included in the z-guide to the Movies are question to stir a family discussion that I know my husband will use when the time comes for our kids to watch this movie as well as a list of additional resources for further study on the subject.   I particularly like the fact that it directs us toward a website where you can order a model of the Nieuport 17 aircraft.  Finally, all the answers to the questions of the activities are included at the end of the document.

The price to obtain the z-guides to the Movies is 12.99$ US.   However, both the CD version of the document and the pdf version are at the same price.   I think that the pdf version should be less expensive since it is an instantaneous download while the CD version will require the production of the CD.    I suggest that that publisher reduce the price of the pdf version to 9.99$ to make it more attractive for people willing to get the pdf version.  Also be aware that the movie is sold separately.

You can access the full list of z-guide to the Movies available directly from the Zeezok Publishing website.

Kid Scoop

rrs_box

As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I have the opportunity to discover interesting products that could help in homeschooling.    Such a product is the Kid Scoop Reluctant Reader Solution.   I had the privilege to obtain a digital copy of the document as well as the online Newspaper for Kids that Kid Scoop provides to their purchasers.

Kid Scoop believes learning is fun! And honestly I think it should be like that.   So they have put together weekly activity pages on a variety of subjects to encourage the child who doesn’t enjoy reading in a traditional matter to explore, learn and discover that reading can also be fun.   While the child goes through the numerous topics included in the Reluctant Reader Solution, he/she will also explore while going through various activities from reading, writing, arithmetic and science.   These fun pages can be used as last-minute lesson plans or after-school activities in an homeschool environment.

I asked my almost 7 years old to test some of the activities with me.   My son is a bright boy who struggles a bit with his reading.   He has made lots of progress since the beginning of the year and I can see that sometimes it overwhelms him.    His father being dyslectic we sort of expected that one or more of our kids might have problems with learning to read.   But we work on it on a daily basis and we practice the reading while doing these pages.   download_edition

With the Reluctant Reader Solution, you will get journal type worksheets on the following subjects:    Backpacks, Baseball, Bees, Bigfoot, Blooming Creative, Bubble gum, Budgeting with Thrifty and Fritter, Butterflies, Cinco de Mayo, Clay Play, Columbus Day, Constitution Day, Easter- Bubby buddie, Elf Entertainment, Father’s Day – Allowances, Fire Safety, Fitness Fun, Frost, Germs, Gorillas, Green Kids, Halloween –  Scary Rooms, Heifer International, Hockey, Holiday High-rise, Immunization, Independence around the world, International Space Station, It’s Showtime, Junkyard Sports, Kitchen creativity, Louisa May Alcott, Memorial Day, Mini-golf math, MLK Day of Service, Mother’s Day Scrambled Story, Nutrition Labels, Old Stormalong, Optical Illusions, Orcas, Otters, Owen and Mzee, Point of view, Skin Protection, S’Mores, Solar Snacks, St. Patrick’s Day – Blarney Stone, State of You, Strike Up the Band, Tadpoles, Talk About Teasing, Thanksgiving – Priscilla’s Got Problems, The Maya, Tom Sawyer, Toon Time, Toys for Tots, Valentine’s Fitness, Veteran Day and W2011_01_21_10_21_11_0009_thumbangari Maathai.

The first one we tackled was the frost one.   I was quite impress with the information provided within these worksheets.   It explained how frost becomes frost and how to “reproduce” the frost effect in our home.   We had a little experiment which all the kids enjoyed.   The other ones that I have printed and used over the past few weeks are also interesting.   You could even print these and bring to an appointment and do them while you are waiting patiently to see a doctor, dentist or whoever else you need to see.

My only disappointment was the fact that there was many subjects specific to American holidays only.   I would have been more willing to buy something like this if I would know that it would be more international on the subjects like for example – geography, North Pole, Kangaroos and so on.  The other option would be for the creators of this interesting product to put together a another version of the Reluctant Reader Solution with themes/topics more general and avoid the special holidays.

Their site KidScoop.com allow kids to play interactive games and contribute content right to the site in our Write On section.  Parents and teachers can also join their community at the Kid Scoop blog and purchase and download Kid Scoop news editions in our shop.   Worksheets are available for the price of 2.99$ US and special e-books editions are available for 14.99$US.   Please note that more worksheets are available on the website compared to the Reluctant Reader Solution.

You can also sign up for their free 30 days daily “Make Reading Fun” emails.   Personally, after about a week or so of daily emails, I was fed-up and decided to stop them from coming in my mailbox.

The Reluctant Reader Solution is available for the price of 97$ US directly from their website.  The Reluctant Reader Solution digital product has two parts that are included in this price.   Part one consist in the downloaded pdf file which will give you access to many worksheets on a variety of subjects.   Part two of the deal gives your a monthly online newspaper for kids called Kid Scoop News (see image below). This online edition is very colourful and contains tons of fun things to read and do.   You have also the possibility of saving it and printing it.

In conclusion, I must admit that the product is well done and very thought of.    The kids (and mom) can learn a lot using these as complimentary assignment.   I wouldn’t base my whole homeschool on these but they are very good for special days and for adding more fun while learning something specific (like the otters for example).    Remember that when you purchase the Reluctant Reader Solution, you'll receive 12 months access to the Kid Scoop monthly newspaper, and 365 Kid Scoop Worksheets.   I see many potentials for this product, however it would be nice to be able to receive the extra worksheets with having to pay extra for them.
