Wonders of Old Medieval Timeline

About the app

Wonders of Old: Medieval Timeline is a beautiful timeline reference app which will give you a unique perspective on the events of world history, including…

  • kingdoms
  • empires
  • rulers
  • battles
  • explorations
  • literature
  • architecture
  • and so much more!

It is a proven fact that timelines help cement historical facts for students and adults alike. Seeing the progression of time in the form of a timeline will allow your student to gain a better understanding of the flow of history. Maps are included so that students can see where events happened as well.

The truth is... many students may study the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks, the end of Hundred Years' War between France and Britain, and the printing of the first book, the Gutenberg Bible, never realizing that these three events all happened within the same year - 1453AD. These events may seem unrelated and yet the use of a timeline can unlock the mystery as to why all of these events occurred within the same year. A timeline will give you and/or your student a unique perspective of time. By seeing the events of history recorded in linear progression, you will make connections between those events in history that you might not otherwise make.

Wonders of Old is a 4-part app series, dividing the events of world history into four historical time periods: ancient, medieval, new world and modern. Wonders of Old: Medieval Timeline is the second app in this series.

Features:

  • Tap the timeline spiral
  • Swipe horizontally to move along the timeline
  • Tap on buttons to access descriptions of events in time

My Thoughts

If you are an homeschooler, you probably know about the company Knowledge Quest.   And if you know about them, then you are aware of their product titled Wonders of Old.   Well you will be please to hear that they have partnered with iHomeEducator to creator another wonderful app on the Medieval times.    I say another because there is already an app on the Ancient times available.

MedTLscreenshotI particularly love the way the timeline is presented on this particular app.   The spiral is a great way to travel through time.   Once started the app will play Medieval music which I find will transport you to that era.    It is interesting to listen to such music while exploring the visual timeline that starts at the 5th century and goes up to the 16th century.image

Once you have selected the century to discover, you will get another timeline for that specific century separated in decades.  For each decades, you can read specific information about various historical events.  For example, in the 16th century, I clicked on the year 1512 where it says Michelangelo Buonarroti paints the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.   A pop-up window opens up and I can read more about this event in history as well as see picture linked to that event.

I love being able to dig into this timeline and discover more about the Medieval times.   At this point in our homeschool, we have not studied the Medieval times but I know this app will be a great addition in our studies when we arrive there.

This app is a must for any homeschoolers out there and for whoever likes to study the medieval times.

See for yourself by watching this little video!

Wonders of Old Medieval Timeline is available on iTunes for the price of 4.99$.    Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.

Map Trek Volume 1 Ancient World

image

Created by ihomeeducator and Knowledge Quest.

If you are an homeschooler, you probably know the quality products that Knowledge Quest have to offer you or someone has told you about them.   If you are an homeschooler and have an iPod/iPhone/iPad, you probably have heard of iHomeEducator and their fabulous apps for math, grammar and spelling.    Well, bring these two together and be ready to have a wonderful app to guide your through the Ancient times which mixes geography and history together.

The text included in this app is based on a popular homeschool product sold at Knowledge Quest –Map Trek: Ancient World.  The app brings the book to life and will permit you and your kids to navigate through time from the tip of your fingers.    You will get colorful maps that will illustrate and give your information about the area you would be interested in.    Simply click on one of the era listed on the main timeline to open it up.

Within seconds you will have a map coming up and you can easily open up the information by selecting a pin.   In the image below, you get an idea of the Barbarian Invasions in 500-800 AD.  If you select the little flag at the HUNS you will be able to read more information about them and their well-known leader Attila the Hun.

Being an app that highlights geography and historical events, you will have information on major cities, sea, events and more that happened during the ancient times.

I had discovered an issue while exploring the app though.   When checking out the map of Abraham’s Journey, I looked into Gomorrah and the text said Read about the current archaeological evidence on the next map.  However, there wasn’t any link for me to click to open the next map.  If I go back to the main menu and select the next map which is The Promised Land, I do not get the information I was looking for.   But this is only a small issue in this app.   In a whole, I think this app if simply fabulous and is worth considering when you study the ancient times.   You will get plenty of information on the following subjects:

* World Map (landforms)
* Descendants of Noah
* Mesopotamia
* Sumerians
* Called Out from Ur
* Abraham's Journey
* Ancient Africa
* Old Kingdom of Egypt
* Ancient Egypt
* The Exodus
* Early Greece
* The Promised Land
* 12 Tribes of Israel
* The Assyrian Empire
* Israel's Golden Age
* Phoenicia's Trading Empire
* Solomon's Kingdom
* Israel's Divided Kingdom
* Ancient India
* Ancient China
* The Founding of Rome
* Babylonian Empire
* The Persian Empire
* Greco-Persian Wars
* Golden Age of Greece
* Ancient Europe
* Alexander the Great
* The Punic Wars
* Palestine during the time of Christ
* The Early Church
* The Roman Empire
* The Roman Empire Divided
* Barbarian Invasions

I highly recommend this app for all my homeschool friends who are looking for something that will bring history and geography to life through interaction.   Map trek Volume 1 Ancient World is definitively an app to own for your homeschool!

Map Trek Volume 1 Ancient World is available at iTunes for the price of 9.99$.   This being the first app in a 4-part series keep an eye open for Medieval, New World and Modern in the months to come…

My Thoughtsimage

I am no stranger of the product of Knowledge Quest.   I have heard of them and know of the Wonders of Old Ancient Timeline.   I am quite pleased to see that this wonderful homeschool product has found it’s way to the digital era.   Personally I was quite excited about this app because I am planning to jump into the study of history with the kids this Spring.    I had started a couple of years ago but back then I was just starting homeschooling and suddenly felt overwhelmed with it.   So I put aside our history book and waited.   Now I feel I can handle homeschool a little bit more and plan to re-introduce history in our schedule.   With the main subject almost completed for this year, it would be interesting to study something different and explore the ancient times.

imageSo having the Wonders of Old app will also help us to be transported in the ancient times as we can observe and read about the kingdom, empires, rulers, wars, artifacts, inventions, advancements and more.  While studying history with your kids, you can easily travel the timeline and find what you need.    I like the way the timeline is presented.  When a specific subject attract your eye, you simply have to click on it to obtain more details on it.

I see that we will more than likely use this app a lot during our studies on ancient times while doing history.    I find it always interesting to have images with text about something.  This app is offering just this for many ages from the past and areas around the world – Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and Americas.    It is complete in many aspects as it present the history in multiple areas during a certain period of time with one eye view.

The app is also linked to Wikipedia for certain topics.  However, I find that it is better to hold your iPad on the landscape side because when the Wikipedia windows opens it would be cut if the iPad is on the portrait side.

Nevertheless, this app is wonderful to have and I am recommending it to anyone studying ancient civilizations with their students whether at school or at home.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.  Requires iOS 4.2 or later.

Available directly from the iTunes store for 4.99$.
