Prayers needed for a case at the Supreme Court

A few weeks ago, I received an email about a prayer request on an upcoming case at the Supreme Court in Canada.

Tomorrow (May 18th) is the date.

Here’s the email.

Dear OCHEC members and leaders,

Earlier this week you received an email from OCHEC forwarding to you press releases about the Supreme Court of Canada case on May 18th regarding the Province of Quebec curriculum, the Ethics and Religious Culture (ERC), addressing the issue of whether parents have the right to choose the kind of education their children will receive, particularly in regard to religious instruction. Basically, the province of Quebec is insisting that its students take a course on Religion and Ethics that teaches all religions are on a par. Thousands of parents have tried to excuse their children from the class, but their request has been refused (the province supplied the school boards with a standard rejection letter). Two parents have fought this and the case will be argued in the Supreme Court. How does that work? On May 18 the nine Justices of the Court will hear both sides of the case presented (certain Christian organizations, including CCCC and EFC, are among the interveners) and then they will decide if it is the parents or the province who are able to decide what their children should learn in this case.

Why are we sending this out to our Homeschooling community? Because if the SCC decides in favour of the Quebec ministry of education, it will set precedent giving the government the right to choose and insist on the content of curriculum even religious curriculum. This case could be used in the future to decide legislation regarding home education freedoms.

We’ve been asked to circulate a request to join with one support group that is organizing prayer and fasting for the weeks leading up to this case. I’ve attached excerpts of emails from S K who is spear-heading this prayer and fasting movement.

If the Supreme Court of Canada case we referred to is decided in favour of the Quebec school board things related to parental choice of educational material will be non-negotiable. Forever. And it would almost certainly affect homeschooling, eventually: imagine if you could only homeschool if you agreed to a certain curriculum (including books you disagreed with) and your kids were required to be tested on the material....and that was the only homeschooling option. Consider how things have changed from when you were a kid. I remember being read Bible stories, told about John 3:16 and studying The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in my public school, when they still said the Lord's Prayer. None of that would happen now. Gideon Bibles are barely permitted in the Waterloo region schools and the school board is considering further legal action on that issue. What else will be lost over the next 20 years if we do not seek God's face on this? (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Pray! Pray! And please again consider fasting .

Here are a few suggestions for specific prayer:

Pray Proverbs 21:1 "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever He pleases." - that God would direct the hearts of the Justices ("kings") to allow parents, not the government, to decide what children should learn.

They are

The Right Honourable Madam Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, P.C.

The Honourable Mr. Justice William Ian Corneil Binnie The Honourable Mr. Justice Louis LeBel The Honourable Madam Justice Marie Deschamps The Honourable Mr. Justice Morris J. Fish The Honourable Madam Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella The Honourable Madam Justice Louise Charron The Honourable Mr. Justice Marshall Rothstein The Honourable Mr. Justice Thomas Albert Cromwell

Pray for all the people arguing this case on May 18 - for our Christian brothers & sisters intervening in the case, that the Holy Spirit would tell them what to say (Matthew 10:19-20). We are asked to pray for those who persecute us - not sure if the opposing folks would count as persecutors! - but pray that they (and the Justices) would have their hearts turned to Christ.

Above all, whatever happens, pray that God would be glorified.

Please ask yourself: What if you were in the situation of wanting to excuse your child from seeing an objectionable movie in class, BUT YOU COULDN'T. [These things are already happening in public schools in Ontario.] Or, you did not want your child to read a blasphemous book, but you had NO WAY of preventing it - except for your child to get an incomplete credit in that course. Or, you want to send your child to a Christian school, but the Christian school is not allowed to teach Biblical Christianity (Jesus really IS Lord, etc). Or, you are homeschooling but are forbidden to teach about Jesus (or, say, use creationist materials) or just that you are required to have your kids follow certain curricula.

Well, you could say that this doesn't affect you, and it probably wouldn't immediately. But I think it is naive to think that it wouldn't eventually. The underlying issue is WHETHER IT IS YOU OR THE GOVERNMENT WHO SHOULD CHOOSE YOUR CHILDREN'S CURRICULUM.

Lest you think "Oh, that couldn't happen here", please consider the fact that more severe restrictions already exist in western Europe. For example (this is from Wikipedia, accessed today, under "Homeschooling in

Germany"):

"Homeschooling in Germany is illegal with rare exceptions. The requirement to attend school has been upheld, on challenge from parents, by the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. Parents violating the law have primarily or most prominently been Christians seeking a more religious education than that offered by the schools.[1][2] Sanctions against these parents have included fines of thousands of euros, successful legal actions to remove children from the parents' custody, and prison sentences.[1][2] It has been estimated that 600 to 1,000 German children are homeschooled, despite its illegality.[3]”

PLEASE PRAY. OUR GOD ANSWERS PRAYER.

Thanks for reading this far! And feel free to circulate this to anyone you think would be interested.

"As a Father, God finds His greatest pleasure in relieving the wants and granting the desires of His children. Prayer is the child's request, not to the winds, nor to the world, but to the Father...Prayer is the seeking of God’s great and greatest good, which will not come if we do not pray." (E.M.Bounds)

From an HSLDA Canada email I received today.

Right to opt out of anti-Christian course in Québec argued before Supreme Court
In September, 2008, the Province of Québec changed the religious education curriculum, requiring all students from first grade to the end of high school to take a course each year entitled, Ethics and Religious Culture. The course surveys all religions, treating Christianity on par with all other religions. No religion is permitted to be presented as more desirable than any other. The course is mandatory for all public and private schools. Even religiously based private schools are not permitted to teach a religion course contradicting Ethics and Religious Culture.
The Applicants, Lavallée and Jutras, are a married couple with four children. They live in Drummondville, Québec. On behalf of their children, they applied for exemptions from participating in the Ethics and Religious Culture course. Their requests were denied. Several thousand parents living in the Province of Québec also applied for exemptions from the Ethics and Religious Culture course on behalf of their children. All requests were denied. The Minister of Education has, apparently, indicated that all such requests will be denied. School boards have been supplied with a standard form rejection letter for this purpose.
The outcome of this case will potentially impact religious education throughout Canada. Right now even private Christian schools in Quebec are prevented from teaching religion from a purely Christian perspective.

Please join me and many other Canadian homeschoolers in praying for this issue.

Thanks.

What to say to a 5 year old?

I got a complicated question at supper time from my almost 5 year old...   A hard one for me to be honest.

So we are eating and Dominic looks at me and ask "Are we going to see mamie soon?".

This is a touchy subject...  If you are wondering why just click here to know more about the situation.

So I looked at my hubby and then turned to Dominic and told him.  "I'm not the one deciding you know.  Hopefully soon..."

Then he looks at me again and says "Well, I would like to see her before she dies."

Ouch!   Got tears in my eyes...  Don't know what to say to that.   I had to got in the kitchen so I didn't cry in front of the kids.   It breaks my heart... but I can't do anything about it.

Oh Lord!  Please soften my mom's heart.  Break the walls she had built around her.   Reach out to her.   Bring someone she trusts who would explain your marvelous gift to her in words she would understand... (she rejected it from us a few years ago)   Oh Father, give me strength...  If by any chances, my son is prophetic in any shape or form, I pray that you give a dream to some of our leadership team members about it (not hubby of course - someone outside of the family who have no clue this would be a confirmation...).   Show me what to do...   We do talk on the phone.  No e-mails since she refuse to give me her new e-mail address...  I hurt... feeling alone in this (I don't have any brothers and sisters, my dad left many years ago and dead since 2000).  I'm lost and don't know what should be my next step.   Amen.

One thing for sure... I don't want to be like that for my kids in the future!   I love them too much for that...

Tonight is the night...

H.E.A.T. Worship House is starting tonight...

How do I feel about it?   To be honest I don't know.  I think I have butterflies in my stomach.   I wish that it will be a success and that people will love it.   I hope that God will bless us beyond what we can imagine.  I dream of many people coming through the doors and enjoy a new way of doing church.

I hope we will have an impact on the young adult generation.  That they will be drawn to God like we can't imagine or even dream off.

I pray my kids will be accepted by the people coming.   That drugs and alcool will stay out of the building.  That the neighbours won't complain of the music.   That the venue where we will meet will see the good we are doing for the unreached.

I will stand and support my husband in this adventure.   I'm scared... I'm honest about it.   I still don't know what God wants me to do in this ministry.   Tonight, I will really become a pastor's wife...  Mind you I am already being a mentor I think to the young women in the group - well I hope so...

So if you don't mind... please pray for H.E.A.T. and for my husband, Rob, my kids and for me!

Oh and if you want to read about H.E.A.T. check out the link to our website and the blog on the right side...  It's worth reading about it!

God bless!

Update on the prayer request for Matt

25.   All his life in front of him...   Accepted Christ a week ago today.   Then sickness.   Got an infection in DR while on a mission trip with our church.   In hospital since then.  His heart is affected.  Coded twice.   Brought back twice by the doctors.   In isolation since Monday.   Waiting for blood results...

But great news...  He is now in a room!

See the update I got this afternoon.

Matt was moved from CCU late last night to a room in the Heart Institute.  He is still in isolation, but is now on a portable heart monitor which is allowing him to get out of bed and move about the room.  His spirit are greatly improved.  He is now on IV anti-biotics and heart medication to keep his heart rythm stable.  There should be some more info following blood and test results later this afternoon or tomorrow.   Continue to keep him in your prayers.  He is very grateful for all the care and prayers on his behalf.  Pray for healing, no heart damage and restoration to complete health.   Pray that the Lord would reveal His plan for Matt's life and that his faith would be made stronger through this experience.

God is amazing!   I'm sure he has great plans for Matt.   Matt doesn't know it yet.   Talk about a testimony!

Update on the prayer request for Matt

As you know, Matt coded twice yesterday and by the grace of God, the doctors were able to revive him both times. There may have been heart damage due to this.

He suffered severe chest pains prior to each episode. He was stable throughout the night but is again currently suffering chest pains.

Please pray:

  • that there be no damage to the heart

  • that God will heal and take away the chest pain

  • that Matt will remain calm and cooperative with the hospital staff. He is confused and frustrated and doesn't want to be there.

  • Matt accepted the Lord into his heart on the DR trip and is confused as to why this is happening to him. Please pray that God will speak to him and will give him a peace that surpasses all understanding

  • that Donna and Mike will feel God's comforting presence

  • for rest for Donna and Mike as they have not slept yet

Thanks to everyone who is praying!

Prayers asked...

Whoever read this, please pray for the son of the counsellor at our church.  Matt went to a Mission trip to DR with our church.  His mom and step-father were there as well.   We have a partnership with a chuch in Monte Llallo through Compassion Canada.

Anyhow,  this was the second trip in DR our church made.   Both times, Matt was there.   This time though, on Friday February 22nd, it seems that he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.   They came back on Saturday.

During the week-end he wasn't feeling well.   At first they thought of a possible virus.   His mom brought him to the hospital and he got transferred to the Heart Institute.  Looks like he has a condition caused by a virus in his heart.   There is heart problems in the family.   Because he was in a foreign country and because of the virus, he is in a isolation area which means that whoever visits must wear gown and mask...

Today in the early afternoon he coded.   Doctors were able to bring him back.

At 530pm he coded again....  Again the doctors werre able to bring him back.

Please bring for him.  Pray also for his mom, Donna, and her husband, Mike.  Pray for healing and comfort.  Pray for a miracle for this brand new christian.

He is in his mid-twenties from what I understand.

God can heal.   I know he can.   Either way, it will be an amazing testimony.   Personally, I would prefer having him telling this testimony.  But it is in God's hands.

Thank you for praying.

An adoption prayer request!

My brother-in-law and his wife would like to adopt a little girl.   They had learned that there will be a pre-trial next week and that there is a possibility that the judge will make a final decision regarding this case at the pre-trial...

They really hope to have that little girl.   Even their son is quite attached to her.  Actually, everyone in both families like her a lot.

Please pray that we will have good news...   Personally I would like a niece in the family as we have a bunch of boys.   Don't take me wrong, I love the boys in the family but some feminine touch is missing...

Prayer requested...

A small prayer request for my friends.

Dominic's has a lazy eye (left side).  What is a lazy eye? you might asked.  Well it has a tendency to go inward (ie toward the nose).  So we need to see a specialist for this and I won't get an appointment until mid-october.   My family doctor said it could be either glasses or a patch.   We shall see.   In the meantime, I pray that it will correct itself or at least not get worse.

Thanks for praying for him!
