Snowpiercer - Complete Second Season

Snowpiercer - The Complete First Season

Synopsis
As Season One ended, so did the revolution, with Layton emerging as Snowpiercer's leader and another threat to the survivors fast approaching in the form of a rival train.

In Season Two, Mr. Wilford arrives, bringing a secret from Melanie's past.  A new power struggle emerges causing a dangerous rift as people are divided between their loyalties to Layton and to Mr. Wilford, who has a new train, new technology and a game plan that keeps everyone guessing.  While Layton battles Wilford for the soul of Snowpiercer, Melanie leads the charge over a shocking new discovery that could change the fate of humanity.

My Thoughts

I enjoy watching apocalyptical movies and television series with my husband and children. It allows us to debate on what if scenarios of multiple sorts.   Whether we like it or not, I think it is good for our brain to think of how we would react and survive if something dramatic would happen on our planet.

Let me remind you that this series is a reboot of a film,    The series follows the passengers of the Snowpiercer, a moving train that circle around the globe, after the planet became a frozen world.   The series deal with various themes like class warfare, social injustice and politics during a time of survival.

A series like this is great to stir interesting discussions with your teenagers I find.  There is so much we could glean from the episodes and the themes explored.

This BluRay contains a digital code as well as special features that are linked to the arrival of Mr. Wilford.

The series  was renewed for a third season which will premiere in January 2022 and has already been renewed for a fourth season.  Keep your eyes on this series as I think we will see more new twists and turns in Snowpiercer.

Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season Blue-Ray and DVD

I will admit something - we do not have cable television for what seems like forever.   We simply rely on Netflix, Disney+, AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime.

So I did not know about the television series entitled Superman & Lois.  Yes, I know, chocking when it comes to a family who usually follow all television shows and movies from either Marvel or DC.   (We are behind on some of these television shows as we do not have cable... but we do watch them.)

Anyhow, when I had the opportunity to promote the release of the Complete First Season of Superman & Lois in both Blu-Ray and DVD, I jumped on the opportunity.   Even my husband was unaware of this television series.

So this American superhero drama is based on the DC Comics characters Superman and Lois Lane and the series is set in the Arrowverse which means it share the continuity with the other television series of the franchise.

This is a brand new television series which premiered on February 2021 - in the midst of the pandemic.   A second season was ordered and should premiere in early 2022.

Premise: Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane return to Smallville with their sons, Jonathan and Jordan, where they are reacquainted with Lana Land, her husband Kyle Cushing and their daughter Sarah.   Their idyllic lives are upended when The Stranger enters as well as the secret experiments of Morgan Edge.

The Blu-Ray contains all 15 episodes from the first season in high definition as well as a digital code (US only).   The 15 episodes are:

  1. Pilot
  2. Heritage
  3. The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower
  4. Haywire
  5. The Best of Smallville
  6. Broken Trust
  7. Man of Steel
  8. Holding the Wrench
  9. Loyal Subjekts
  10. O Mother, Where Art Thou?
  11. A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events
  12. Through the Valley of Death
  13. Fail Safe
  14. The Eradicator
  15. Last Sons of Krypton
The special features included are:
  • Superman: Alien Spirit
  • Superman and Lois Legacy of Hope
  • Never Alone: Heroes and Allies
  • DC FanDome Panel: Superman & Lois.
One thing is for sure is that we are looking forward to watch this television series that we were not aware existed as soon as we have some time to do so.

This Blu-Ray and DVD television series, which is released on October 19th 2021,  is available at your favorite store even on Amazon.

A Cinderella Story - Starstruck (DVD)

A new DVD has been released last year on a familiar story to everyone - Cinderella.  However, this Cinderella movie has a few twists on its own.

First of all this is a musical film set in Dreary, Idaho.   It stars Bailee Madison as our modern-day heroine Finley Tremain and Michael Evans Behling as her charming remantic interest, Jackson Stone.   Second, the title of the movie/musical is A Cinderlla Story: StarStruck is set in a farming community.

Synopsis: Finley Tremaine, a small-town farm girl, longs to spread her wings and soar as an aspiring performer.  When a Hollywood film crew arrives in her sleepy town, she is determined to land a role in the production and capture the attention of handsome lead actor Jackson Stone.  Unfortunately, a botched audition forces her to change course.  Now, disguised as cowboy Huck, Finley finally gets her big break.  But can she keep the charade a secret from everyone, including her evil stepmother and devious step-siblings?

This is the sixth installment in the A Cinderella Story movie series.  Note that I had no clue that this was part of a series of similar titles that have been released in more recent years:

  • A Cinderella Story with Hilary Duff
  • Another Cinderella Story with Selena Gomez
  • A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song with Lucy Hale
  • A Cinderella Store: If the Shoe Fits with Sofia Carson
  • A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish with Laura Marano

The DVD also also contains special features:

1) Finley's Best Friends: Meet the Farm Animals

2) Dirt Under My Nails: The Making of A Cinderella Story: StarStruck.

If you like Cinderella type of stories, you will probably like this new movie.  However, if you find there is too many of these type of movies out there, I would suggest that you find something else to watch until you are in the mood for it.

Snowpiercer - Complete First Season

Snowpiercer - The Complete First Season

Synopsis
Set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, Snowpiercer centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train, with 1001 cars, that circles the globe. Class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival play out in this riveting television adaptation based on the graphic novel series and film from Oscar® winner Bong Joon Ho (Parasite).

My Thoughts
I personally did not know about this show and reading the description of it I was curious.  What I also didn't know is that this television series is also based on a movie from a 2013 South Korean-Czech film and a French graphic novel from 1982 titled Le Transperceneige.

This post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller television drama series premiered on TNT back in May 2020. It has since been renewed for a second season which will come out on January 25th, 2021.

The idea behind the series is interesting.  With so many dystopian based movies and series out there, this one has definitively a unique idea.   The Earth has become a frozen wasteland and the remnant of the population travels endlessly around the world in a moving train which is composed of over 1000 cars.   Can you imagine living in close quarters for days on end while the outside world is an hostile environment?  I suspect there will be clashes and battles that will arise for sure particularly when you know that there are classes set up and a social hierarchy is visible.  How will the limited resources be allocated within the train?

Interestingly enough the series is set in the year 2021.  This is close to home this time for a dystopian story.   As I write this just so my future readers understand why I say this - the year 2021 has started 16 days ago and today in Ontario, Canada we are having the first snow fall of the year.

The series investigates class struggle since the passengers are segregated by wealth, social injustice, warfare and the politics of survival.

If you enjoy post-apocaliptic dystopian kind of television series, you will enjoy Snowpiercer.

Eyewitness DVDs

Through the years I had the privilege to present a wide variety of Eyewitness DVDs on this blog. The Eyewitness DVDs would be great in this time of social distancing to allow your kids to learn on specific subjects like plant, insect, ocean, birds and so on.

I have two other ones that I would like to present this morning.

EYEWITNESS DVD INSECT

Like it or not during our spring, summer and fall seasons (at least in Canada anyways) we are surrounded but a wide range of insects.   Discover a world of creatures that are industrious, sociable, and environmentally useful.   Unfortunately for some of them, we do not have the patience to have them around us buzzing constantly in our ears.

But there is much to learn on these creatures.  This DVD will allow you to explore the wonders of the insect world through macro photography and 3-D graphics.  You will observe a queen wasp building her nest, a caterpillar devouring a leaf, a damselfly nympho emerging as an adult and so much more.

EYEWITNESS DVD WEATHER

Weather is something we experience day after day in life. Sunshine. Rain. Snow. These are only a sample of what weather is.   Sometimes it can be deadly like lighting, extreme winds, hail...

This DVD takes you on a tour of Earth's turbulent atmosphere and reveals the forces that make our day a nice one or a disastrous one.

Conclusion

Both of these DVD can make a wonderful unit study for your kids when learning from home - whether you are a veteran homeschooler or a new one (voluntarily or not due to Covid-19).

Each DVD are about 25 minutes in length and are packed with information that is interesting and educative at the same time.

God’s Not Dead–A Light in Darkness

Recently my family and I had the privilege to review the latest God’s Not Dead movie on DVD.  God’s Not Dead – A Light in Darkness is a story of destruction, forgiveness and trust that will unfold through your GodNotDeadLightinDarknesstelevision as you watch it.

If you are a Christian you know about the God’s Not Dead movies and this one is bringing up questions like “Is God really good all the time?”, “Where is God when bad things happen?” and “Can Christ really heal the brokenhearted?”

If you are not a Christian but interested in spiritual aspects of forgiveness then I think this movie is worth watching.  And do not worry about not having seen the other two movies of God’s Not Dead because even though you have some recurring characters from the previous movies the story line is pretty much a stand alone one.

In a nutshell, the story revolve around the fact that the church located on the grounds of a state university is becoming less and less welcome.  Though students are attending this church many thinks that the ground on which the church stand should be use for the university purposes.   Suddenly tragedy struck the church and its congregation as a fire erupt.   The church is destroyed and a battle of rights starts.    Which side will win?  The university?  The Pastor?   Amidst all this you discover that sometimes trusting God is difficult as well as hearing from God is not always easy.   Still we have to continue to trust that He has a plan and that ultimately He will win the battle over darkness by shining His light.

I won’t go into the details of what happens in the movie.  But all six of us in the family enjoyed watching it and came out encourage in our faith to persevere when things do not go our way.

I find it is a great movie to watch with family, friends, in a church setting or with new believers.

God’s Not Dead – A Light in Darkness is available for purchase at your favorite store, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone DVD

imageThe Resurrection of Gavin Stone

About the movie

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is an inspirational comedy rated PG about faith and forgiveness. Gavin Stone, a washed-up former child star is forced to do community service at a local mega- church and pretends to be a Christian so he can land the part of Jesus in their annual Passion Play only to discover that the most important role of his life is far from Hollywood.

Our Thoughts

When my kids saw the image of the poster their first reaction was “Hey Mom, this is Ward!”    You have to know that we are listening to Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to know who Ward is.  But yes the main actor that plays Gavin Stone in this movie is indeed Brett Dalton.

The movie start a bit differently that most movies out there.  It was a bit confusing at first but the story unfold itself before you as you watch it.   It is slow to start we have found but with time you can see that the actors are getting more comfortable with each other.

Gavin Stone has hit rock bottom and he is required to do some community time at a church in his hometown.   At first he doesn’t want to but realizing that his only option would be to stay in prison he reluctantly agrees to the deal.  He will also have to stay with his father with whom he has cut the communication for such a long time.

While starting to do his hours at a church in town, he realizes that they are putting a play.  He expresses a desire to be part of it seeing that he has experience – going to the point that he will “fake” being a Christian.  However, what he has not realized is that slowly but surely he will realize that these people are authentic.  He will discover what it is to live as a Christian with his interactions of a variety of characters.  After meeting the lady in charge of the play, he expresses a desire to get to know her better.  At first she is hesitant in opening up to him but eventually a spark seems to melt her resistance.   However, when it is almost time for the play to be on stage, Gavin Stone received a phone call that will  change everything.  Will it be for the better or for the worse?   I won’t tell you because then I would give away the best part of the movie.

Watching this movie was relaxing.  My husband and I started to watch it on Good Friday when our boys were at a youth rally in town.   We enjoyed it and thought that our kids could also watch it.  So as I am writing this, my three boys and my girl are watchin the Resurrection of Gavin Stone together in the living room.  They laughed a few times so far too.    The movie is a faith-based movie so you will have references from the bible and the play is based on the life of Christ.   Seeing the play was also inspiring I find because it was a great way to visualize the life of Christ.

The movie is rated PG and anyone in your family could watch it.  You can rest assure that there will be no sex, no nudity, no violence, and no profanity either.

If you are looking for a family movie that will be inspirational, I think this movie should be one to consider.  However, do not expect bit production like the movies released in theaters that had an enormous budget.  Keep in mind that this movie was made with a budget of 2,000,000$ and was filmed in 20 days.  The movie is about 92 minutes long.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone will be out in DVD soon so watch the DVD aisle at your favorite store.  You can also pre-order it on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Sony BDPS1700 Wired Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player (2016 Model)

Recently I have received a new Blu-Ray Sony Disc Player from Amazon Canada Vine Voices.   This dvd player is smaller than the one we had at home.  The dvd player is also quite light compare to the one we had.

In the back of the player you will see the following inputs/outputs: 1 HDMI, 1 Coaxial, and 1 Ethernet.   The player also allow you to watch regular DVD as well as Blu-Ray DVD.DVD1

This specific device will allow you to streams from over 300 apps and entertainments services like Netflix, Crackle, huluplus, YouTube, and more via an easy access through the customizable user-friendly interface.   You will also possess the capability to stream and enjoy Play Station Now 3 games instantly on your television.   Finally, the player possess an USB slot on the front which will permit your family to enjoy music or watch photos and videos.

From what we have experience with this player, we find that the loading time was a bit faster than the previous DVD we had.

WDVD2e are not gamers like most people might be. So for us the PlayStation Now was not a major bonus.   As for the entertainment services and apps available through the DVD, again it is not something we will be using a lot since our television is directly plugged to the internet via the personal desktop my husband has setup for us.   We access Netflix directly from our desktop instead of going through the DVD player or the television (since many television offers this as well).     We are also very wise with our finances and when you need to pay extra to access other services or apps and even games, we are not the kind of people who would do it.   We are quite satisfied with Netflix Canada at this point in time since we are not binging on television shows much.

What is neat through is that there is a button on the remote control that will allow you to jump to Netflix quickly without going through the interface of the DVD player.

DVD3

You will need an HDMI cable to be able to use it.  Also you will require a Wired Ethernet Cable to allow you to stream the apps/services and PlayStation Now.

The Sony BDPS1799 Wired Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player (2016 model) is available for purchase at your favorite electronic store, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Burning Questions DVD

imageBurning Questions
With Dr. Andy Bannister
Talon Productions

About the DVD

Six-part documentary series from RZIM Canada

Burning Questions was carefully developed by RZIM over 18 months with the intent to create a tool to generate respectful, thoughtful dialogue on key faith questions, engaging both skeptics and seekers. Rather than providing pat answers, in the documentary series, Dr. Bannister interviews credible global experts from a wide range of backgrounds – leading atheists, passionate Muslims and convinced Buddhists – on these questions that transcend culture.

Questions addressed include:

  • Is There a God?
  • If so…. why is there evil and suffering?
  • Has science eliminated religion?
  • There are thousands of different religions: which one is true?
  • Can we take the Bible seriously, or is it just a myth?
  • Who was Jesus of Nazareth and does it matter?

Who is Dr. Andy Bannister?

Dr. Andy Bannister is the Director and Lead Apologist for RZIM Canada. He speaks and teaches regularly throughout Canada, the USA, Europe and the wider world. From churches to universities, business forums to TV and radio, Andy regularly addresses audience of both Christians and those of all faiths and none on issues relating to faith, culture, politics and society.

With a background in youth ministry before studying theology and philosophy (focussing especially on Islam), Andy was previously based in Oxford, from where he worked with churches and organisations across the denominational spectrum.

Andy holds a PhD in Islamic studies, a topic on which he has taught extensively, especially since 9/11 and the huge interest that was sparked in the subject by the events of that day. He has spoken and taught at universities across Canada, the USA, the UK and further afield on both Islam and philosophy and is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Islam and Other Faiths at Melbourne School of Theology.

Andy is the author of An Oral-Formulaic Study of the Qur’an, a groundbreaking and innovative study that reveals many of the ways the Qur’an was first composed. His latest book, The Atheist Who Didn’t Exist (or: The Terrible Consequences of Really Bad Arguments) is due to be published in summer 2014.

When not travelling, speaking, or writing, Andy is a keen hiker, mountain climber and photographer. He lives in Toronto and is married to Astrid and they have one daughter, Caitriona.

My Thoughts

Burning Questions was carefully developed by RZIM over 18 months with the intent to create a tool to generate respectful, thoughtful dialogue on key faith questions, engaging both skeptics and seekers. Rather than providing pat answers, in the documentary series, Dr. Bannister interviews credible global experts from a wide range of backgrounds – leading atheists, passionate Muslims and convinced Buddhists – on these questions that transcend culture.  This is a DVD which will hopefully help you answer some of questions that you wonder yourself or someone you know is asking these questions.  The DVD contains six episodes which will highlight a specific question that is asked by many people around the world.  Let’s explore the questions together.

The first episode covers the questions:  Is there a God?   It is perhaps the biggest burning question that is in the mind of many people everywhere.   Are we alone in a meaningless, purposeless universe or is there some kind of creator – some kind of higher power out there?   It is a debated questions that is often covered in books, podcasts, and documentaries.   On one hand, the culture has seen a bigger interest in atheism whose advocates tell us that anyone who even professes belief in a deity is simply insane or irrational.  However, belief in God is alive and well.   Over 90% of people around the world believe in a higher power.

The second episode will spend on time  on the question: Hasn’t science buried God?  Since the scientific revolution in the 16th and the 17th centuries, we have made huge advances in physics, chemistry, and biology.   People have a tendency to think that science has pushed God out of the picture.    But he is really?

The third episode will take you on an investigation of the problem of evil.   When the Titanic departed from the docks at Southampton nobody would have thoughts that four days later it would sink tragically after hitting an iceberg with over 2500 people loosing their lives on that fateful voyage.  Whatever our worldview whether we are Atheist, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindus, or Christians – whatever it is that you believe, disasters raise the question “Why?”.  Why do bad things happen to good people?

In episode four, you will explore which religion is true.   Toronto is a multi-cultural city in Canada.  It is in fact on of the most multi-cultural city in the world.   In Toronto, you can meet people from every culture, country, religion, and belief system.  This huge diversity of religions that exists makes us wonder which religion is true. How can you choose?

In episode five, you will discover if you can trust the Bible.  Let’s face it.  The Bible is the best selling book of all time.   However, many countries around the world have tried to ban it from their borders.   Christians around the world have been jailed and faced execution for the crime of smuggling Bibles in these countries.  In this episode, you will discover if the Bible is reliable.

Finally, in episode six you will discover who was Jesus.   Was he a man who was simply teaching or a man whose claims could inspire such devotion and commitment from people.

In an effort to answers these questions, Dr. Andy Bannister interviews numerous people from different beliefs and religions, whether that person is a spiritual leader or a professor, Atheist, Christian, Jews, Muslim and more.

I think that kind of DVD is always good to watch in order to grasp a better understanding in the belief system of the people around us and discover other worldviews.    I find that these kind of questions and discussions help to affirm our belief in God.   Every Christian who desire to deepen his/her understanding of worldviews and be able to have an intelligent conversation with someone different that yourself.    I would highly encourage parents to watch this with their teenagers in order to equip them in such conversations and help them to see the difference in worldviews that they might encounter at college and university.

What I particularly like is the fact that this DVD has been supported and promoted by Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM).

A free comprehensive study guide is available for download when you go to burningquestions.ca.

Burning Questions is available for purchase directly from BooksforChrist.com for the price of 39.99$.

My Thoughts

I recently picked up the Choose Justice DVD in order to proceed with my review and while reading the back of the package I saw that it was touching various part of someone life: lifestyle, at the table, at the party, at the mall, at the bank, in community.   They I stopped myself… because I recognize three of these subjects from the discussions I had with my oldest son who was now attending youth group.  He would share what they had talked during their Tuesday evening meetings and had mentioned that the Justice theme would go on for six weeks.  Six weeks…. mmmm!  This DVD had six sessions.   Could it be a coincidence?   As I walked toward the kitchen where I knew I would find him, I knew what would be his answer.   After all, he had mentioned about justice at the table, justice at the mall and just the day before the youth had done a canning drive in the neighborhood of the church as an activity for the justice in the community.   So hiding the DVD package, I asked him innocently if there was by any chance that they watched a DVD during their six weeks on Justice.  His quick eyes had seen part of the cover and he says “It looks like the guys we watched.”   I showed him the DVD package and he affirmatively told me that it was the same thing that they had just completed.   Interesting.

He told me that the sessions were interesting and thought provoking.  But I didn’t want to write this review based on his thoughts only.  So I decided to watch some of the sessions.

For the get go, the two hosts is strongly encouraging people to   think about if we are living a lifestyle that Jesus wants us to live.   I really like it when Tony Campolo is mentioning that if you can share what you have with another believer who is struggling.   The hosts are also encouraging people to get out of debt in order to be able to live more freely.

The package also contains a conversation guide that is based on the sessions on the DVD.  Each session starts with a discover – i.e. watch the session on the DVD.   Then you can expand with the Discuss in order to discuss with your group about what you have seen and the Decide part which will encourage your to Choose Justice Daily.   Finally, the session is close with a prayer that you can use to encourage everyone to stand up for justice in their daily lives.

image

One of the sessions that really touched my son while attending youth was the Justice at the Table.  He couldn’t believe how much waste there was from daily lives.   In our home, we try to use as much of the fruit or vegetable as we can.   We own a Vitamix that we use to purée the parts of a fruit or a vegetable that most people would throw out.    My husband is a great encourager on this specific issue.     I also watched this session and  I was strongly encouraged to explore gardening in our backyard.  I have been interested in doing so for quite some time but never took the time to design and plan in order to do so.  But I think that next year, we will be able to built a above ground garden and plant some nice veggies for our family.   We usually share with people in our lives when we do so.  For example, this year, we processed 250 lbs of tomatoes and made salsa that we share with friends and family.   Recently, my oldest son had an assignment to do a friendship bread recipes that gave 4 loaves. We could keep one and then he had to share some with friends and give two away to people in need.   Turns out that we had a friend coming that evening and she knew two families that were struggling – we quickly made two boxes to give some salsa, jam, onion jelly as well as the friendship bread so we can bless these two families.  It was fun to do this on a spontaneous way.

To be honest, I am particularly pleased on the fact that I have the opportunity to review a product that my child has been exposed to through his youth meetings.   Having in hand will allow us to use it with the other kids as they enter the youth ages.      After watching the DVD, I can say that this is perfect for youth and adult alike.  It’s a great way to discover how you can change your daily lifestyle in order to be able to promote justice on a daily basis.

Choose Justice – A Daily Lifestyle is also available on amazon.ca.

Published by DK Canada

About the DVD

Here is a an original and exciting new look at the fascinating natural world of plants. Stunning real-life photographs of flowers, fruits, seeds, leaves and more offer a unique "eyewitness" view of the natural history of plant anatomy and growth. See the biggest flower in the world, where a seed develops, what the inside of a plant stem looks like, how a flower attracts insects, what a plant's reproductive organs look like, and how a dandelion spreads its seeds. Learn how plants defend themselves, why flowers are brightly colored, how a plant can climb, why some plants feed on insects, and why some plants have no seeds. Discover why some plants have spines and stingers, what plants looked like millions of years ago, how plants survive in the desert, how plants turn sunlight into energy, and much, much more.

My Thoughts

We really enjoyed watching this DVD one gloomy morning during the month of June.   We learned quite a bit while listening to the narrator proceeded to explain everything relating to plants – from the seed to the various types of plants we can find on the planet.   We were amazed to be presented with stink plants which doesn’t grow on a yearly basis, to discover how carnivorous plants eat their prey, how the dandelion can be useful during war time and how a cactus can be affected by lighting in the desert…

This dvd was an eye opener to the world of plants and I think it would make a fabulous addition to your personal dvd library if you are homeschooling.   We have a book on Botany that I am thinking of using next year and I will definitively re-watch this dvd with the kids when we study the plants in more details.  The dvd can also supplement your studies of insects as you will see how they can help with the reproduction of plants.

If you are wondering how to entertain your kids during a rainy day or how to can feed their brain with educational information during the summer months, this dvd will allow them to learn quite a bit about plants.

The Eyewitness DVD Plant is available for purchase at your favorite bookstore, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

DK Eyewitness DVD–Pond and River

Published by DK Canada

About the DVD

Here is an original and exciting new look at the fascinating natural world of ponds and rivers. Stunning real-life photographs of fish, water beetles, frogs, underwater weeds, and more offer a unique "eyewitness" view of the natural history of plants and animals that live in and around freshwater habitats. See how a trout develops from its egg, how a dragonfly nymph changes into a dragonfly, what plants look like under the water, and how waterbirds camouflage themselves. Learn how a frog catches its food, why a caddisfly makes a case from sticks and shells, and why kingfisher eggs have no camouflage markings. Discover how to distinguish the difference between toad spawn and frog spawn, how underwater nests are made, how a salmon climbs a weir, which insects can walk on water, and much, much more.

Our Thoughts

The campground we park our RV has a nice lake where numerous creatures can be observed.   Well, actually it is two lakes separated by a small wooden bridge to allow you to go on some trails.   Every year, my kids and husband go fish in the biggest lake but we have encountered turtles, frogs, fish, dragonflies and much more in our exploration.   Knowing that the campground will open in a couple of weeks, It just made sense to watch the Pond and River DVD.  Besides it was a great item to have at hand when I wasn’t feeling too good due to sickness.

So one Friday morning, we sat down in the living room and proceeded to discover what we can learn about ponds and rivers.   As per previous DVDs from DK, I knew we would have an interesting time watching it.  In this DVD you will discover the kind of animals that can be found there, what is the water cycle, how the U.S. Army went into battle against a mighty river, how some frogs carry their young and how humans has made sure that some fish can go back to where they were born when they face a huge manmade dam.

IMG_7796

This year as part of our learning experience during the summer, I would like to take sample of water at the campground and observe what can be found under the microscope.   I will once again bring my camera with me when I go for walks and hope to snatch some IMG_7813cool pictures of plants and animals living near the water.  Who knows maybe I will spot the beaver or the muskrat living in the smaller lake.  I heard a splash quite often while walking around it.   I suspect it is a beaver but until I see it with my eyes, I can’t be sure.  I had the privilege to watch one of the painted turtles laying eggs a few years back and hope to once again witness this event.

The Eyewitness DVD Pond and River is fascinating and will teach you quite a lot about the life found in these waters.

The DK Eyewitness DVD Pond and River is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com

Chase DVD based Study

ChaseChase – A DVD-Based Study – chasing after the heart of God
From Jennie Allen
Published at Thomas Nelson

About the study

What are you chasing?

We’re all chasing after something, something that we think will make us happy—comfort, success, a bigger house, or someone’s approval. But if we are all honest, it feels like trying to catch the wind.

A man after God’s own heart… As David’s life weaves throughout the pages of Scripture, we see he was a man who spent his life chasing after God. Chase explores the events that defined David’s life and the Psalms that flowed out of those experiences. Through David’s example we’ll discover what God really wants from us.

The lessons in this study are simple yet deep and very interactive, offering Bible study, stories, and projects to dig into Scripture and deeply engage the mind and heart. God has carved out a space in each of us that only He can fill. So whether you are running from God or working your tail off to please Him, David’s journey will challenge your view of God.

God is invisible, and yet He is the only thing we can chase that won’t leave us feeling more empty.

Study Kit Tools:

  • Study. The study guide uses projects, stories, and Bible study to engage the mind and heart. There are seven weeks of Bible study and an introductory session for your group.
  • See. Eight short but deep videos provide a starting place for meeting God and for transparent conversations. Each video is 8-12 minutes long.
  • Ask. Conversation cards offer questions for spontaneous and authentic discussion time. You choose the questions that speak to you.
  • Lead. The leader’s guide prepares you to lead this study and encourages you along the way.

My Thoughts

Unbeknown to me before I accepted to review CHASE, our pastor had planned to lead the congregation through a journey in discovering David with a series titled From the Sheep Pen to the Throne.  So having this DVD study was a blessing in disguise without me knowing it.  I can go deeper in the word in discovering who David was and how he chased God in his life – even when he screwed up at times.

The DVD contains seven lesson that you can watch on DVD and then ponder and go deeper with the study guide.  The lessons are the following:

  • Lesson one: identity
  • Lesson two: courage
  • Lesson three: obedience
  • Lesson four: belief
  • Lesson five: repentance
  • Lesson six: surrender
  • Lesson seven: chased down

Each DVD lesson are short – about 6 minutes each – and the camera is doing a fabulous job at catching simple image yet serene ones to help you listen to Jennie talking.

While watching one of the lessons, she got me reflecting on these words:

How we live our lives will flow out of what we believe about God. What you know is true of God is defining your life.  It is defining everything about you.

She also gives personal examples from her life and her family through the videos which makes it more interesting I think.  I really enjoy reading the author’s thoughts on a specific subject she/he presents.   In the study itself, you are guided into deeper into God’s word, more personal stories from the author.   For example, take the Obedience chapter – you will study about Saul and David, compare both and discover their motivations, discover what it means to follow rules, learn how to react when we are in doubt, read Psalm 63 and react to it by reflecting on the words and how it can applies on you, and finally conclude the lesson with projects.  The projects will allow you to apply what you learned in your own life – three projects to grow in chasing God’s heart.

Listen the author presenting Chase.

I am enjoying Chase and discovering more about God through the life of David.  It really helps that our church is going also through a study of David at the same time.  Though the teaching at church is different, I find it interesting that I got to review this particular DVD study when we were embarking in a journey of discovery of David at church.

I would recommend this DVD study for every Christian women out there.  It is a great study to do with other women or by your own if you prefer that.   The package also comes with the ask cards which allows the group to share on a more personal level.    I would also use these cards as a base for journaling if you do the study alone.

Chase is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even on amazon.com.

The study guide is available for purchase as well.

The study guide is also available for the Kindle.

About the Study Guide

This study guide is available for each Awesome Science DVD (a new series from Master Books). These help create a reflective learning situation after viewing each exciting episode, and are filled with substantial discussion questions, fill in the blank, true and false, as well as bonus activities. Can be used in Science and religion class - also would be great for church youth groups.

Our Thoughts

Here’s another interesting DVD from Awesome Science!   Noah Justice has once again delivered a great explanation of biblical evidence in some of the geological wonders in our world.  This time he is bringing us to Yosemite and Zion National Parks – both places that I would love to visit one of these days!   Through this DVD we learned the history of Yosemite National Park and learned that it was one of the first scenic areas of land set aside for the enjoyment of the public.   The view is breathtaking and it’s a wonder how people don’t see the hand of the creator when they visit that place.

Thought this DVD you will learn how the valley is evidence of erosion from a global Flood, how the one and only ice age happened and how long it lasted, and finally you will travel to Zion Canyon to discover its layers, arches and hanging valleys.   We particularly liked the original example of Noah presenting a miniature version of how Zion Canyon have been formed.   This presentation in itself it worth the whole DVD I find.  It was impressive and gave you a new perspective of the global Flood.

You can also get the Study Guide for the video if you want to deepen your learning experience.   Use it to test the knowledge acquire during the video or to simply discuss what has been said.  This specific Study Guide is divided in two major sections representing the two National Parks explored with Noah Justice.  It contains bonus activities, word list to study, fill in the blanks, discussion questions, true/false statements, as well as more information on the concepts learned during the visioning of the DVD.

Once again I am not disappointed with the DVD from Awesome Science and find that these are a great addition to homeschool, school or even personal library. I find it essential that Christians realized how things happened and not be manipulated by evolution thinking. This DVD is geared for children and teens but adults will enjoy it as well. However, I find that my younger kids have more trouble to stay focused during the whole length of the DVD. Besides, Noah uses terminology that might be going over their head. Nevertheless, they are learning while they are watching even if they don’t catch everything at the first time. The videos of Awesome Science are something you can go back to on a regular basis and discover something new out of it.

The DVD is available at your favourite bookstore, even at amazon.com. Unfortunately the DVD is not available on amazon.ca for reasons unknown to me.

The Study Guide can be purchased at amazon.ca or amazon.com.  It is also available for download on the NLPG website.

Our Thoughts

My oldest son was very excited when we received the latest three dvds of Noah Justice and his Awesome Science series.  We have both been waiting about these after we discovered the first three episodes last year.   These DVDs bring to life the understanding of the catastrophic Great Flood and will provide you with clear explanations and evidence found in the real world and based on the Bible.

Do you remember where you were on May 18th, 1980?   That’s when Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted and caused the largest landslide in modern human history.    I don’t know what I was doing back then as I was eleven years old.  More than likely I was in school and probably didn’t react to this catastrophic event much.   I would have been in grade 6 back then.    Nowadays, I see the advantage in learning more about such events happening in nature and being a Christian I want my kids to understand and be able to explain how the Great Flood really happen contrary to how scientists these days are saying…

This DVD and its study guide will not only present you the history of Mount St. Helens but will demonstrated how this event that happened 32 years ago can explain and support the evidence of the Biblical account of the flood.    Not only will you be able to defend your faith in the Noah’s story but you will also learn quite a bit on rapid erosion, coal formation and quick biologic recovery.   You will also explore with Noah how canyons, stratified layers and petrified forests can be formed rapidly during a catastrophic event like the eruption of Mount St. Helens.   Noah will also bring you inside a chamber where lava used t flow and explore a tunnel left by a tree under the ground.   My kids were in awe of these two explorations and now want to go visit the places where Noah has brought us.

The Study Guide is perfect to reinforce the learning done during the session on DVD. It contains bonus activities, a complete word list, key concepts to discover, some fill in the blanks sentences, some true or false statements as well as discussion questions.  All these can be used to test your student in his/her comprehension as well as deepen the learning done while watching the DVD.   I really love having the study guide with me when we watch the DVD.  I only wish that this study guide could fit in the DVD box for easy storage…

These DVDs were made for an audience on children and teens.  However, I find that it is a better fit for ages 10 and up as my younger kids will loose their concentration after a while and my almost nine years old son has missed some of the information shared by Noah.  However, the Awesome Science DVDs are so packed with information that I would strongly recommend that you watch them more than once in order to fully process all you can learn from them.   Literally, Noah doesn’t stop a minute to let you catch your breath.  He will repeat some key information in the DVD but still I think that watching the DVDs more than once or twice would be a good habit due to the fast pace.   The lessons are educational and entertaining in themselves.   I am very impressed with the quality of the videos and the information contained in them.

Other DVDs are available in the Awesome Science series; Explore the Grand Canyon, Explore Yellowstone, Explore Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest, Explore Yosemite and Zion National Parks, and Explore John Day Fossil Beds. All these DVDs will deepen your knowledge and understanding of creation science as it will use the biblical worldview to bring science to life.
