Scribe Bible

IMG_3772

The journaling Bible community keeps growing every day.  What is a journaling Bible you might wonder?  Well essentially, it is a bible with margins on the side of the page where you can jolt notes, prayers, illustrate a scripture and much more.   The people who know me would testify that I am illustrating the scriptures in my bible but a journaling Bible can be more than that.   There are a wide variety of journaling Bible on the market – some with margins on one side, others with margins on both side, even an interleaved version where you get a full blank page for each page of the Bible.   You will find version with drawings that you can color in and other ones where you can let you creativity flow completely.    Today I would like to present you a new journaling Bible that has come on the market – the Scribe Bible which features The Message.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to review The Message Canvas Bible which contains illustration to color in as well as black areas for jolting down notes, prayers, or do your own “illumination” (illustration of a scripture). The Scribe Bible is different because there are no illustrations already included in it.  This one could stretch the artist in you in many ways as you are not limited with already printed illustrations.   However, for someone who do not desire to color in the Bible, you will have plenty of spaces to write your own thoughts, the impact that scriptures had on you, prayers for your loved ones and much more.

The Scribe Bible comes in two different format – the leather-look with brown linen weave and the hardcover dark walnut.   Both are great and it would only depend on your on what style you prefer.

As I looked at the pages in these Bibles, I decided to compared them with my ESV Journaling Bible and a NIV Journaling Bible that I am working as a special project.  As you can see on the pictures below, the color of the pages are similar – light beige.   I have also measured the size of the margins and all three bibles are somewhat similar (about 2”).   As for the lines in the margins,  the ones in the Scribe Bible are a bit darker than the other two Bibles.  Nevertheless, I think there is a lot of potential for The Scribe Bible for journaling and/or illustrating.

Note that the top Bible with the girl holding the bow and arrow is the NIV journaling Bible, the middle one is The Scribe Bible, and the one below is the ESV journaling Bible.   As for the other picture the bottom one is The Scribe Bible.

IMG_3773IMG_3774

On the back of the case where these bibles can be protected, a scripture has been written.   Exodus 17:14 says “God said to Moses, “Write this up as a reminder…”  I think this scripture is very true in many ways.  Since I started bible journaling I find I am able to recall scripture more easily and rapidly than before.  In a way illustrating scriptures helps me to memorize them and hide them in my heart.

The Scribe Bible also comes with a guideline to help you to start a chain reaction that would affect all the areas in your life  marriage, parenting, friendships, workplace, and more.   First you are encouraged to read the contemporary version of the scripture.   After you have done this, you can record notes and prayers (and even illustrate if you want to) using the margins.   You can also pray as the Holy Spirit inspire you.   Finally, after you have done this, you will have the ability to remember God’s faithfulness in your life when you take the time to look through your notes and prayers in the months or years to come.

In the end, this bible can become a Legacy Bible for your family in the future as your children or grand-children have the possibility to see how God spoke to you and how you prayed for your loved ones.

The Scribe Bible would make a great gifts for anyone on your Christmas list – mom, dad, children, friends, …

The Scribe Bible is available for purchase at your favorite bookstore, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Let the story of God paint the canvas of your imagination!

My Thoughts

When I received the bible, I immediately flipped through its pages in order to discover it.  The “artist” in me  wanted to grasp all the possibilities of this bible.   The more I explored it, the more I realized that it is absolutely stunning in many ways.  It is perfect for people who enjoy drawing designed images for there are numerous designs included in this bible.  Also, all the first page of the books of the bible possess a fabulous design which also includes the title of the book.     I also noted that the chapter numbers are somewhat designed in such a way that you could color them as well.  When there isn’t images to color, you have the choice to either design your own image based on a verse that speaks to you or write note in the marge provided.

467204_6_exc  467204_3_exc

I wouldn’t be honest if I told you that there isn’t anything that I dislike in this journaling bible.   There are a couple of things that I will mention.  First thickness of the  paper in this bible seem to be thinner that the pages of previous journaling bibles that I have encountered.   I am a bit concerned that if someone us the markers used to draw the images will bleed out on the reverse page.  Already the images incorporated in this bible can be seen at some extend on the reverse page – and these are pages that are printed at the publisher.   So drawing with markers might be difficult for this specific bible.   My other pet peeve would be that the verses are not numbered.   For many years, The Message bible never had numbered verses but I know of a recent edition of The Message that has some numbering in it.  So I am wondering why not including these as well in The Message Canvas.   It’s not a big deal but when a person is used to follow numbering, well it could be somewhat annoying…  However, it is easy to follow the text and you could work with a regular bible by your side as well.

Personally, I wish that The Message would have a journaling bible edition that does not includes pre-printed images to color.  I am the type of person who loves to design the scripture on my own.  Don’t take me wrong, you still can do this on all the pages that do not have a design to color.  I know that it is not everyone who would develop their artistic side.   I am please with the fact that there are plenty of blank pages for the reader to explore his/her creative heart or simply jolt down notes, impressions and prayers.  Having a journaling bible has definitively allowed me to grow closer to God and spend more time with Him on a daily basis – not to mention to develop my skills in lettering and drawing.   Nowadays, I draw tiny scripture doodles in an agenda by writing a scripture and illustrating it.   I also have journaling bibles for each of my four children that I am working on as well as a special project that is almost complete for my husband done in a little black notebook.    I would like to challenge my readers in exploring the possibilities of getting deeper in your relationship with God by getting a bible journaling – with or without images already drawn in it.  Be spontaneous and get creative!

You could win your own The Message Canvas Bible by coloring specific images offered on their website.  All you have to do is print the image that is the most current, color it, and submit it on social media sites and follow the instructions for submission.  Simply go to http://themessagecanvas.com/color-to-win/ in order to participate. In order to give you an idea of what it looks like when colored here’s an example that I have done.

Hunt for the Devil’s Dragon

imageHunt for the Devil’s Dragon (The Imagination Station #11)
Written by Marianne Hering and Wayne Thomas Batson
Published at Tyndale

About the book

If you’re brave, follow cousins Beth and Patrick to Libya in the 13th century. The town of Silene is being terrorized by a vicious animal that is eating livestock. The townspeople believe it’s a dragon sent by the devil. In order to appease the beast, the people believe they must offer a human sacrifice—a young girl named Sabra. When Beth tries to help Sabra escape, she too is tied up as an offering for the dragon. Meanwhile, Patrick and a new friend named Hazi join Georgius, a Roman knight who is serving in Africa to keep peace. Georgius decides to find the dragon and kill it. Georgius’s plans go awry when Beth and Sabra beg him not to kill the dragon. The girls know the true secret of Silene—the dragon isn’t its worst enemy.

My Thoughts

Here’s another excellent book from The Imagination Station series.  This series allows the reader to explore historical event with the help of fictional characters from Focus on the Family well know radio show Adventures in Odyssey.  Written for kids ages 7 and up, this series helps to discover historical events with a biblical perspective as two cousins are sent back in time.   In this particular installment, the cousins, Beth and Patrick, are sent to the 13th century Libya where a vicious animal is killing sheep.  Some people in the town thinks that they need to sacrifice a young person in order to appease the animal.

A Roman soldier whom is a believer as well will come to the rescue.  Though it is believed that a dragon is behind the killing, the cousins and their new friends will quickly discover that it is not behind the killings.

As per previous books, you also have the possibility of downloading a free episode of Adventures in Odyssey if you solve the secret world puzzle at the end of the book.   There is also a quick page of Q&A about dragons at the end of the book.

This book is a great summer read for your child and if you are familiar with the previous titles in the series, you know that you will find quality in the story.    If you are not familiar with The Imagination Station series, think of it as Magic Tree House meet Christianity and you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Hunt for the Devil’s Dragon is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The book is also available on Kindle.

My Thoughts

I was really excited when I was approached with the opportunity to review this book.  My husband had gone through Lead Like Jesus a few years ago with the leadership team of our church and I had heard great things about it.  I never had the time to read the book that he read but it was on my books to read list for the future.  So when this opportunity crossed my path as a blogger, I jumped on it knowing that I could take good information from it.   It took quite some time to receive the book mainly because I am in Canada and the postal service was slower than usual.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus is what I consider the parenting book to read in 2013.  It will encourage you and help you to become a better parent.  The book is divided in four parts in which all three authors have written about.  Part I will concentrate on the heart.   In the three chapters within this section you will discover how to have an eternal perspective, how to be humble and how to focus on God.   Part II of the book will lead you on the head part of your parenting – discover your family mission, say yes to the best and no to the rest, and know the difference between a crisis versus a bump in the road.  Part III of this book will highlights the importance of the hands in your parenting.   You will learn how to make the most of the childrearing years, how to help you kids succeed, and how to inspire obedience versus rebellion.  Finally, Part IV of the book will focus on the habits that are good to develop as parents – time with God (perspective from a dad and a mom) and how to turn mistakes into opportunities of forgiveness and grace.

As a homeschooling mom, I find it essential for me to read inspiring books about parenting in order for me to be energized and encouraged.   This year, I had the opportunity to attend the homeschool conference which I wasn’t capable to do in the past two years.  I have seen a huge difference as my spirit lifted and felt encouraged to pursue this road with our family.   I missed it.   I am realizing that in the past two years or so I also missed on being encourage as a parent and this book has been a delight for me.   I am inspired to focus our family on serving more and I was encourage with the Scriptures found in this book.

The authors have giving me a new perspective in my parenting skills and reading about Tricia Goyer’s view on each part of the book was encouraging to me because I knew she homeschooled her kids.    Reading about her thoughts was the highlights of the reading of this book.    I still have a couple of chapters to go through because I find it essential for me to ponder and reflect on what I have read before I continue.

I highly recommend this book for every Christian parents out there.  It will be a blessing for your family to read this book.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The book is also available for the Kindle and Kindle app.

I Still Believe–a memoir

imageI Still Believe – a memoir
From Jeremy Camp
Published at Tyndale

About the book

Christian recording artist Jeremy Camp has written songs that have touched millions of lives. His lyrics reveal a heart that’s been broken and a faith that has been tested and restored.

In I Still Believe, Jeremy shares, with unflinching candor and emotion, the extraordinary story behind his award-winning lyrics–from his impoverished childhood, rebellious teenage years, and spiritual awakening at Bible College, to the tragic loss of his first wife, Melissa, to cancer and the heart-wrenching spiritual journey that followed–a journey that reignited Jeremy’s faith, inspired some of his most beloved songs, and paved the way for a second chance at love with his second wife, Adrienne.

This memoir is a must-read for Jeremy Camp fans everywhere, and an inspiring, encouraging read for anyone who has ever experienced loss.

My Thoughts

“I Still Believe” is a powerful song that Christian artist Jeremy Camp has written after the death of his first wife, Melissa.    The book titled I Still Believe is a powerful memoir of the life of Jeremy Camp and the way God has been with him through the years.   But before I share my thoughts about the book let me tell you that it will touch the deepest part of your soul.

First of all, the story totally grabbed me from page one of the book where Jeremy shares how the song came to life.   But as I continue to read, I found myself wanting to know more about his life, how God guided him through hard times and good times and how he became the artist he us now.  I just couldn’t put the book down.  My oldest son couldn’t believe that I read it in three days – that’s because I had to put the book down for homeschool, eat and sleep…  *grin*     I suspect he will grab this book to read it himself in the weeks to come as he loves listening to Jeremy Camp’s music.

Secondly, this testimony will pierce your heart and you will cry – guaranteed.   If you don’t well I don’t know what is wrong with you to be honest.  It is a beautiful love story between a Jeremy and God, Jeremy and his family, Jeremy and Melissa, Jeremy and Adrienne and finally Jeremy and his children.    At each step of his life, you can experience the spiritual grow of Jeremy Camp and at the same time wanting more for yourself as well.   I am amazed by how people got touched hearing this testimony during shows and now I know that even more people will be touched by this book.   You can sense God presence and marvel to how Jeremy matured during his journey.

Not only does he have amazing blue eyes but he has an amazing story worth reading by everyone – Christians and non-Christians.   It is a story that will touch anyone who have lost a loved one and had to deal with grief and a story that will give your goose bumps as you read it. Smack in the middle of the book, you get a glimpse of the life of Jeremy with marvelous pictures of his life.   Getting an eye bird view of his growing up years and more recent pictures of his family is a marvelous way to visualize the story within the book.   You will read about his joys, his struggles and his pain at the lost of his first wife.  You will discover the people who supported him, encourage him and helped him through the loss of Melissa.  You will see how God gave him opportunities to touch people and brought love back in his life.

I really enjoy this book and highly recommend it to everyone.   It is written simply and in such a way that it will be difficult for you to put the book down.   I know it was for me!   Jeremy Camp has an amazing story to share and it is worth reading it.  If there was one book I would recommend you to read this year it is I Still Believe.

I Still Believe is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.  However, I strongly suggest that you purchase a box of Kleenex at the same time as you will need some as you read this moving testimony of Jeremy Camp.

The book is also available on Kindle.

Challenge on the Hill of Fire–Imagination Station 10

imageChallenge on the Hill of Fire – The Imagination Station #10
Written by Marianne Hering and Nancy I. Sanders
Published at Tyndale

About the book

Kidnapped by Celtic Druids in 433, Patrick and Beth are headed to certain death when followers of a former Irish Slave (Saint Patrick, called Patricius in this book) save them. The cousins find themselves in the midst of a power struggle between Ireland’s King Logaire, Patricius, and the leader of the Druids, Lochru. A spiritual showdown begins on the Hill of Slane when Patricius builds a fire, challenging the King’s authority. Will Patricius prove to the king that the God of the Bible is the true God? Or will the king take sides with the Druids? The Emerald Isle holds many tales and legends, but this story of truth and standing strong for God is not one to be missed.

My Thoughts

I was very happy when I received the latest Imagination Station book because I know that there is quality behind the cover of this title.  Having reviewed the previous nine titles of the series, I know that my kids will be exposed to Christian values and historical events as they never experienced before.   In this particular book, you will follow the cousins Patrick and Beth to Ireland in the time when Saint Patrick was a Bishop in the land.  They will be kidnapped and saved in a miraculous way.  They will learn more about Saint Patrick and how he shared the gospel with the people of authority during that time.

I think this book is a fabulous read to do with your kids when you are close to Saint-Patrick Day in March.  Not only will they learn a bit more about Saint Patrick but they will also get expose to values that should be instilled in children.   This book is great for read-along or for a child who has become more independent in his reading.  Even though these books are written for kids ages 7-9 in mind, my 11 year old son really love the series as he has learned to enjoy the radio show Adventures in Odyssey.  Reading these books allow him to re-connect with the characters in a different way.   I suspect that he will grab this title and read it in one sitting.

What I particularly like about The Imagination Station is that the stories found in them are based on historical events as well as contain Christian values and lessons.    Not only do I think these are a great series in itself but there is a fabulous bonus attached to each book in  the series.  At the end of each book, you will find a puzzle for the kids to resolve in order to get a special prize from the website.  Once you find the secret word, you simply go to http://www.whitsend.org/imaginationstation, click on the words Secret Word for any of the titles you have just read and obtain one episode of the Adventures in Odyssey absolutely FREE!   One episode is all we need when driving to swimming lessons (okay make that two episodes if we come back… though I take the habit to talk about the one we listened on our way to swimming usually.).

Challenge on the Hill of Fire is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The book is also available on Kindle.

God on the Streets of Gotham

image God on the Streets of Gotham – What the big screen BATMAN can teach us about GOD and ourselves.
Written by Paul Asay
Published at Tyndale

About the book

What do God and the Caped Crusader have in common? While Batman is a secular superhero patrolling the fictional streets of Gotham City, the Caped Crusader is one whose story creates multiple opportunities for believers to talk about the redemptive spiritual truths of Christianity. While the book touches on Batman’s many incarnations over the last 70 years in print, on television, and at the local Cineplex for the enjoyment of Batman fans everywhere, it primarily focuses on Christopher Nolan’s two wildly popular and critically acclaimed movies—movies that not only introduced a new generation to a darker Batman, but are also loaded with spiritual meaning and redemptive metaphors.

Who is Paul Asay?

Paul Asay is associate editor at Plugged In, a ministry that reaches more than six million people with movie reviews that help people understand popular cultural trends and how they intersect with spiritual issues. Paul is an award-winning journalist who covered religion at The (Colorado Springs) Gazette and whose work has been published by such outlets as The Washington Post, Christianity Today, Youth Worker Journal and Beliefnet.com. Paul has a special interest in the unexpected ways faith and media intersect. He lives in Colorado Springs with his wife, Wendy, and two children.

My Thoughts

This isn’t the first Christian book making a connection between God/Jesus and Super-Heroes that I have seen.  However, it is the first one I know dealing specifically with a comic character from the big screen.    The author decorticates the stories found in the recent Batman movies and attempt to draw a connection between life and God.    He has chosen to limit himself in the character presented in the movies and not extrapolate too much with the character in the comic books.

As I read the author’s childhood, I was choked by the reaction of his dad.  But then I recall what my husband told me what happened when he became a Christian.  He really thought that comic books were not good and sold the comic collection he then had.  But with time, he realized that they are not that evil and restarted it.   When I met him he had about ten boxes in his apartment.   Since then the collection grew, the kids started their own and we are having fun together reading and purchasing new comics when possible.    In the midst of our collection, you will find some numerous Batman comics which is one of my husband favorite.    What distinctively separate Batman from the other heroes is definitively the word SUPER.   Batman doesn’t have special powers.  He rely on his skills and intelligence to fight the bad guys in his city.

I must admit that I don’t agree with everything I have read in this book but the idea behind the book is interesting.   I like to see comparison and similarities between God and super-heroes.   Some Christians might think that comic books are not good but did you know that you can have lots of spiritual messages within them.  That’s what the author of this book did based on the movies of Batman.    Though I must say that sometimes it could be a bit stretched.   Nevertheless, the reading is interesting and it’s the kind of teaching book that is out-of-the-ordinary.

If you are a fan of Batman – whether in the comics and in the movies – I think you will enjoy this book.   However, if you are a die-hard fan of the comic book character and didn’t like the movies that much, well I suggest that you read this book with an open mind.    Nevertheless, I thinkthe author has done a good job in extrapolating life with the Batman movies and presenting God in the midst of it.

Escape to the Hiding Place – Imagination Station 9

image The Imagination Station 9 – Escape to the Hiding Place
Written by Marianne Hering and Marshal Younger
Published at Tyndale

About the book

Patrick and Beth arrive in World War II Holland in the farm country. They must smuggle a baby (by bicycle) into the capable hands of Corrie ten Boom at her home in Haarlem. Along the way they hide from Nazi soliders, meet a Russian surgeon forced into service by the Germans, and encourage two Jewish children who haven’t been outside in over three years. The children learn to appreciate the bravery and sacrifice of everyday people who helped the Jews.

My Thoughts

From all the books of the Imagination Station that I have read so far, this one is my favourite.   Maybe it’s because I really like the story of Corrie Ten Boom but I think it is fabulous that real events from the past is mixed up with fiction characters.

Once again the cousins, Patrick and Beth, are teleported in history.  They arrive in the midst of the second world war and are surrounded by Germans.   How can they protect themselves so that they are not caught?  What can they do to help the people that they encounter?   They will learn that sometimes it takes courage to do something that could change the life of someone.    They will discover bravery and sacrifice were necessary to help neighbours and friends.

And like the other books in the series, you will also have a secret word puzzle that will allow you to receive a free episode of Focus on the Family Adventures in Odyssey.   My kids and I love listening to these while we drive to the swimming lessons or other activities.   The episode are always fun to listen and a new lesson is attached to each one of them.

The books are great for grade 2 or 3 kids but even older kids and parents would appreciate them.  They are  a great addition for any personal library.  If you are wondering which books you could purchase for your kids this Christmas, I would like to suggest the whole series of The Imagination Station.

Escape to the Hiding Place is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com

It is also available on the Kindle.

90 Days Thru the Bible

image 90 Days Thru the Bible – A Devotional Journey From Walk Thru the Bible
Published at Tyndale

About the book

Develop a deeper relationship with God and a deeper understanding of His word in just 90 days! You may believe the Bible’s overall message, but have you truly grasped the whole story? Sometimes understanding the Scriptures seems daunting. Though God’s message of love is simple, so that even a child may embrace it, His epic story is complex enough to mystify even the most curious intellect. We grasp the pieces much more easily than we comprehend the whole.

In 90 Days Thru the Bible, acclaimed devotional writer Chris Tiegreen and Walk Thru the Bible guide you through the major sections of Scripture, meditating on how each story and theme, like the pieces of a puzzle, beautifully contributes to God’s great story. You'll come to understand the heart of God, and the awe-inspiring story he's telling, like never before. With a 13-session guide and discussion questions for reflection, this is the perfect resource for small groups, individuals, and church groups.

My Thoughts

For the past two years, I regularly see the challenge of reading through the Bible in 90 days – 3 months of reading through the Word of God.    I am impressed by all who participates and sticks to the reading for that period of time.   I never really participated as of yet.   I like the challenge but with homeschooling, dealing with reviews and doing other things with my family, I don’t think I would be able to do it.   But when I discovered the 90 Days Thru the Bible I knew I could use this book to challenge me in my Bible readings.

The book is divided in –yes you’ve guessed it – 90 days of reading through the Bible. I starts with the Old Testament and concludes with the New Testament.  Each day contains a reading based on the section to read during the day.   I would highly suggest that you read the Scriptures and then read the chapter.   At the end of the chapter, you will get some questions for reflections and at that time it would be good for you to take your journal out and answer to them.   That way, not only will it get you to stretch your journaling but it will also help you to start a new daily routine in your life.

The book also contains discussion questions for small groups.   You could easily take this and go through the Bible with your home group.  Each and every one would then encourages and be accountable to each other as you go through it.   I think it is a marvelous way to have a group discovering the Bible together.  Essentially, they are the same questions found at the end of each chapter but place on the readings of the week.  In total you have 13 sessions for a home group.

This book is a gift in disguise because I want to challenge myself to read through the Bible in 2013.   More than likely I will go through it in the summer time when the demands in my life are not as strong.    I believe that it is a book that every family should have in their home.  It could be a nice gift to others as well.

About the book

The teen years can be exciting, challenging, and unpredictable—and so can the journey of getting to know Jesus! Around the Word in 60 Seconds is the perfect road map for both of those adventures. This devotional encourages readers to walk closely with God and learn how to handle tough situations with spiritual strength.

An activity, prayer, and verses help it hit home. Through short, daily interactions with God, readers will learn what it means to truly follow Jesus with changed hearts and lives.

Written by popular author Mary DeMuth in partnership with the influential youth ministry iShine.

My Thoughts

At the beginning of the year, my oldest son – who is 11 years old – starting doing a devotional with another book.   I was wondering what he could do for 2013 and this book is perfect for his devotions in the morning.    Around the Word in 60 Seconds is divided in 52 weeks to cover the whole year.

The week starts with a scripture, a story, questions to stir the thinking process on your tween’s brain, a take action part so that the young person can apply what has been read in his/her life and finally a prayer that the tween can pray.  That’s on the first day of the week.   Then for each following days – Tuesday to Friday – the young man/woman is encourage to memorize a scripture and answer some questions. For example, for the verse 1 john 2:16 the question attached to it is:

Why do people struggle with wanting more and more and more?

I am planning to ask my son to answer the questions by filling as much as possible of the page.  I want to encourage him to write as much as he wants about the subject mentioned in the question.   I will also ask him to discuss the questions with me during the weeks.   I hope to help him to be able to journal more about what touches him in the devotions and prayers he might have.

Finally, when the week-end arrives, your child will be able to read another scripture  to memorize and answer other questions.   Each week have a specific theme that can be an issue in a tween’s life like love, family, friends, money, temptation, school and much more.

I think this devotion is perfect for my son.    I am seriously thinking to provide a notebook for him to record his answers so that his siblings can use the devotional as well when they are older.    If you have a young person ages 11-14 years of age, I would like to recommend the Around the Word in 60 Seconds to help them develop the habit of learning more about God’s word as well as do a devotions in the morning.

Around the Word in 60 Seconds is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Battle for Cannibal Island – Imagination Station 8

image The Imagination Station 8 – Battle for Cannibal Island
Written by Marianne Hering  and Wayne Thomas Batson
Published at Tyndale

About the book

It’s 1852 and cousins Patrick and Beth sail to Fiji on the HMS Calliope under the command of Captain James E. Home. They arrive at the islands to find that the Christian Fijians are at war with the non-Christian Fijians. Missionary James Calvert is trying to make peace and suggests that the captain allow peace negotiations on board the British vessel. Patrick and Beth learn about sacrificial living when they observe Calvert’s determination to live on Fiji despite the dangers and impoverished conditions and that he is willing to risk his life to live as Jesus would.

My Thoughts

Here’s another beautiful Juvenile Fiction from a wonderful series that I have learned to appreciate even though I am an adult.   The Imagination Station books are a series of fictional novel which bring two cousins on adventures through time.   In this specific book, the cousins travel to Fiji in the 1850s.   They arrive on a ship and are taken as stowaways.   But their adventure doesn’t end up there.  The ship is anchored next an island where cannibals live.  These natives will do everything to fight against God and its followers.    But one man is determine to stay in order to save all the Fijians.   His name is James Calvert.  Will the last chief refusing to accept God be saved?  You will have to read the book to see how it turns out.

As usual, I learned quite a bit while reading this book.   I have discovered who James Calvert was and what he did to help spread the Gospel in Fiji.    These books are entertaining for the eye but they also stir the imagination of the reader and will bring history to life.  Illustrations also accompany the text and the reader can also learn more about the cannibals and James Calvert at the end of the book.

Also, the reader will be challenged to resolve a secret word puzzle in order to get a prize on TheImaginationStation.com website.   The prize is one episode of Adventures in Odyssey but if your kids are like mine, you can’t get enough of these episodes.   We listen to them on our way to swimming lessons and when we come back from these lessons.    With two episodes per week, we go through our stack of episodes really quickly.  But it is always fun to have new episodes to listen with the kids.

If your child like the series Magic Tree House, he/she will enjoy The Imagination Station series has it is similar to it but with a Christian flair.   So far nine books are part of the series but I suspect that more will be available in the future as this series is gaining in popularity among homeschoolers everywhere.

Battle for Cannibal Island is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

365 Pocket Prayers for Women

Published at Tyndale

About the book

Sometimes it can be difficult to know what to pray for or even how to talk with God. Following in the footsteps of the popular 365 Pocket Prayers that has touched so many lives, here is an edition just for women. 365 Pocket Prayers for Women lets you grow closer to God through this honest and heartfelt collection of daily prayers. There’s a topical index in the back of the book so whether you need to pray about conflict, self-esteem issues, health and healing, your family, or a recent disappointment you’ve experienced, 365 Pocket Prayers for Women helps you open your heart to the one who listens. Each reading in this convenient, easy-to-carry, quick-access guide begins with a daily prayer and ends with a promise from Scripture.

My Thoughts

As soon as I got this little book I was in admiration with the texture of the cover and the embedded flying birds in it.    I love it when publishers do something special with a book that can be carried everyday in your purse.   Because this book is a definite gem to have handy EVERYWHERE you go.   It is packed with prayers to uplift you every day and you can go back to your readings at any time of the day and reflect more on the scripture that is suggested for that day.

What is also nice about this book is that it doesn’t begin with January 1st and can be started anytime during the year.    Some days you will have a full page to read while other days you will get only half a page.   The book covers issues from healing to family.   Everything you can think off will be covered with a prayer.

The day start with a title and a reason why you could pray that.   Right from the beginning the author don’t waste time and starts the prayer.   Somehow, without realizing it, it can easily fit into your life and what you are experiencing.   To conclude, you can read the Scripture at the bottom of the page and reflect, journal and ponder on how it can be applied in your life.

I am enjoying this little book quite a bit and it can be found closely with my journal and my Bible.   Being an homeschool mom I know I need to spend time to do my devotions and I usually do it early in the morning in the living room.  The kids can see me daily going to read there and learn from me at the same time.   So far, I have two kids independent enough to read their Bible on a daily basis.   I look forward to have all four of them taking the time in the morning to spend time with God!

I would recommend this book to every women no matter where they are at in their walk in life.   It can be a great tool to reflect on God’s Word and grow spiritually and prayerfully as well.

About the book
This popular devotional is now in a special LeatherLike edition! In this life, pain and disappointment are real. Maybe you’ve been wounded by a family member or friend. Perhaps you know the pain of losing someone you love or of a difficult medical diagnosis. Sometimes we need to know there’s hope for when life just hurts. Nancy Guthrie knows what it’s like to hurt—sometimes so much that there aren’t words to describe the pain. In this beautiful deluxe edition of The One Year Book of Hope, she encourages you to spend this year learning to hope when life has let you down. She offers no trite answers or quick cures; just remarkable, hopeful daily insights from the depths of Scripture and her own experiences. This year, join Nancy each day in growing closer to God—the source of all comfort.
Who is Nancy Guthrie?
Nancy Guthrie speaks at conferences around the country and internationally, and is currently pursuing graduate studies at Covenant Theological Seminary. She and her husband, David, are the co-hosts of the GriefShare video series used in over 8,500 churches around the world and host Respite Retreats for couples who have faced the death of a child. She is the author of numerous books including Holding on to Hope, Hearing Jesus Speak Into Your Sorrow and The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament.
My Thoughts
The first thing that caught my eyes was the cover of this book.   I marvelous cover with a bird waiting on a branch to take flight.   This is own I feel sometimes when I feel low in my life – waiting for something to help be fly higher.    I know God is with me at all times but sometimes it is easy to forget that He is there and cares for me.
What should you do when life throws you curve balls or when someone close to you wounds you every time you talk to that person?   Ultimately you need to turn to God and hold on to hope.   Nancy Guthrie has written beautiful one page devotions that will uplift you in the morning and encourage you through the day.  Not only will you have a Scripture to ponder on but Nancy will write encouraging words in your devotion.   At the bottom of the page there is also a suggestion for studying a specific passage in the Bible and guide you to dig deeper in the subject covered by the devotion.
The book is divided in weeks with subjects like brokenhearted, Jesus Man of Sorrow, the Father Heart of God, Holy Spirit Comforter, Sufferers, Why?, Life, Death, The Love of God, Sovereignty of God, Protected by God, Miracles, Healer of my Soul, the Presence of God, Knowing God, God’s Name, Gifts of God, Looking to the Cross, Meaning in the Cross, Hope, the Mysteries of Heaven, Heaven Longing for Home, Resurrection, Rewards, Angels, the Enemy, the School of Suffering, My Soul Source, I AM, Storms, Parables, Paradox, the Good Shepherd, Joy, Joy Robbers, Finding Purpose in Pain, Fruitfulness, People, Self, Submission, the Glory of God, Blessing, Worship, Prayer, Word of Life, Forgiveness, Going Deeper, Who Am I?, What Does God Want?, Waiting, Perseverance, and Letting Go.   Not all weeks will be appealing to you but there is quite a few that could bring healing in anyone’s heart.    Each week has an introduction and five devotions to read and ponder on.    Once you have completed the week, you will conclude it with a special page that contains some reflection questions, a meditation as well as a prayer.  I find it a great way to wrap-up a week on a specific subject that would have touched you.
Right now, I have started the Brokenhearted week but as I am thinking that I will jump to the Storms next week as we experienced some of them over the summer.  In the midst of the tornado in our life, we were able to sense God and experience His Peace.
Are you wondering what you can learn with this book?   Take for example the page I read today which concentrates on guarding your heart.    I particularly love the illustration the author wrote in the middle of the devotion:
Gratitude plows up the ground for God’s peace to grow.
and the she goes on with saying:
Peace is a gift of God, but we prepare ourselves to receive this gift as we pray about everything, cultivate gratitude, and refuse to surrender to worry.
This is very meaningful in my life right now for various reasons.   We are waiting for a contract to start for my husband though it also gives him the time to study a new technology in the meantime.   I am grateful for this and hope he will stay motivated.    At the same time I recognize the importance of being grateful as a way to not harden our hearts and be bitter at God when life isn’t fair with us.   I see the fruit of bitterness in the life of someone close to me and it sadden me to experience the end results of that life long bitterness.  I pray sincerely that gratefulness will invade the heart of that person and that God will show His mighty presence as well as embrace that person with love like never experience before.
As for me, well I am learning more and more to trust God on a daily basis and not to worry about the future.   God is in control and He knows what will come.  He promised me “I will never leave you nor forsake you!” over the summer and I know that He will keep this promise.
I don’t know what life is throwing at you and what are your stumbling blocks in your walk but I know one thing since I started reading this devotion I am a little more at peace every day.    So if you are wounded, lost hope or have difficulty of seeing what God is doing, consider getting the One Year Book of Hope Devotional and read through it.   And let God be your source of comfort.  He can do great things is you let Him!
The One Year Book of Hope Devotional is available to purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.

The Imagination Station 7 – Secret of the Prince’s Tomb

image The Imagination Station 7 – Secret of the Prince’s Tomb Written by Marrianne Hering and Marshal Younger
Published at Tyndale
You know a series has caught the attention of your kids when a new book comes in the house and your oldest son – who is age 11 by the way – grabs it and reads it within two hours and thirty minutes.  That’s how good The Imagination Station books are for him.   Considering that the series is geared  for kids 7 and up and more specifically for kids in grades 2 and 3, knowing that my oldest likes them even if he is in grade 6 means a lot to me.   As soon as he had finished the book he asked when I would received the next one.
This specific title will bring the cousins, Patrick and Beth, in Egypt and will make them realize the life style of slaves in Egypt.   Actually, they will have to bring back the hope in a group of people bound to slavery and doing so they will enter an ancient burial vault and discover a special mummy.   Who is this person buried there?   I won’t reveal the secret of the tomb but it was a very important person from the past.
Needless to say, this book helps kids to live the history has it happened and will hopefully pick their curiosity to the point that they would like to know more about this particular period of time.
And to top it off, at the end of the book you can solve a secret word puzzle.  Once you have found the word, you are directed to the website – TheImaginationStation.com – where you can download an episode of the Adventures in Odyssey.   Since my kids are quite fond of the series, this is a bonus treat for us – particularly when we are driving to swimming lessons!
I highly recommend The Imagination Station series as it brings history to life for your kids.    It is a great series to read-aloud when you have multiple children as well.
The Imagination Station 7 – Secret of the Prince’s Tomb is available at your favorite bookstore, even amazon.ca.

Robot Wars Book 5 Final Battle

978-1-4143-2313-8Robot Wars Book 5 Final Battle
Written by Sigmund Brouwer
Published at Tyndale

About the Book

Set at an experimental community on Mars in the year 2039-2040, Robot Wars features 14-year-old virtual reality specialist Tyce Sanders. Life on the Red Planet is not always easy, but it is definitely exciting. As Tyce explores his strange surroundings, he finds that the mysteries of the planet point to his greatest discovery—a new relationship with God. He talks about his growing faith and curiosity in a manner that kids can relate to as they are probably wondering some of the same things.
Book five, Final Battle, begins with Tyce’s threat to reveal his special talents to the world—much to the dismay of the rebels who want to keep the technology a secret. Tyce has to battle the rebels and their plot while trying to return to Mars. The success of the entire Mars Project depends on his every move.

Who is Sigmund Brouwer?

Whether writing youth or adult fiction, Sigmund Brouwer is a best-selling author of more than 40 fast-paced novels. Some of his works encourage young reluctant readers into the world of books, and others provide adults with riveting tales. His youth series include Mars Diaries; Short Cuts Extreme Sports; Lightning on Ice; CyberQuest; The Winds of Light; Dr. Drabble: Genius Inventor; and The Accidental Detectives. His adult fiction titles include Out of the Shadows, Morning Star, Thunder Voice, Double Helix, and Blood Ties.

Sigmund's diverse background surfaces in the characters of his books as he inspires kids to get excited about reading. He grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, and developed an early interest in sports like hockey, racquetball, and biking. His poor performance in high school English classes led him to receive a degree in commerce from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and not to pursue writing. When a professor in his undergraduate English course encouraged him to write, Sigmund did, and he eventually received a degree in journalism from Carleton College in Ottawa. After publishing several articles for U.S. and Canadian magazines, he turned to writing books for kids reluctant to read.

In 1993, he cofounded The Young Writers' Institute with home education expert and author Debra Bell and conducts writing camps and seminars for more than 10,000 children every year. His commitment to his faith is an integral part of his creative goals, and Sigmund cites C. S. Lewis as one of his greatest writing influences. Although there is no overt Christian agenda in his novels, the deliberate underpinning of morality and redemption make his books more than tools of escape. He quotes C. S. Lewis, "There is no Christian way to write, just as there is no Christian way to boil an egg."

Sigmund is married to Christian recording artist Cindy Morgan; the couple has two daughters. He writes five pages per day on his laptop, whether he is in an airport, hotel, or dividing his time between family homes in Red Deer and Nashville.

My Thoughts

After I finished reading the fourth book in the Robot Wars series, I just couldn’t wait to finish the adventures of this Mars colony.  So I immediately started the last installment because I wanted to know what the outcome will be.

Once again the author have two main part in this book – separated into journal entries from the main character named Tyce.    This kid controls a robot with his mind thanks to an operation that unfortunately also made him unable to walk.  Since then he has been stuck in a wheelchair.

The first journal of the book still has many events happening – like a reactor meltdown as well as a disappearance of a close friend.   But through it all, Tyce will provide help and solution for the people on Earth.    Once again this part of the book will keep you on the edge – always wanting to read more to discover what will happen next.

The second journal will bring back Tyce, his dad and friends to Mars.   Like you would expect it more adventure and mysteries will await them on the planet.    To make it even more interesting, Tyce was offered an operation in the hopes that he could walk again.   This journal happens after the said operation and Tyce has a cast for most of it.   Will he be able to walk?   Only time will tell but for the meantime he needs to stop the intruder that is causing problems inside the dome.  Who could that be?

I’m delighted to have read the Robot Wars series and strongly recommend it for any youth who like the science fiction genre.   I know that this is not a genre that pleases everyone but the way this series is written, I think every preteen ages 10-14 would enjoy the characters and the events in their life.   The series build up as you advanced in the books.   Consequently, though you can read them separately, I would suggest that you read them in order so that you have a better understanding of what is going on.

Robot Wars Book 4 Counterattack

About the book

Set at an experimental community on Mars in the year 2039-2040, Robot Wars features 14-year-old virtual reality specialist Tyce Sanders. Life on the Red Planet is not always easy, but it is definitely exciting. As Tyce explores his strange surroundings, he finds that the mysteries of the planet point to his greatest discovery—a new relationship with God. He talks about his growing faith and curiosity in a manner that kids can relate to as they are probably wondering some of the same things.
Book four, Counterattack, opens with Tyce and some of the Mars Project’s staff captured in a prison; they end up in prison while carrying out a special mission on Earth. Tyce has to figure out a way to fulfill their mission and rescue kids—all before a world war breaks out.

My Thoughts

This book will definitively keep you on the edge.   Packed with action and mystery you wonder at every page what will happen next.    Though the series started slowly and build up the suspense until book three, this book is getting close to the conclusion of the adventure and contains lots of events.

Like the previous book, Counterattack includes two journal entries.  The first one picks up where book three ended and how the main characters got arrested when they arrived on Earth.  What arrested?   How come?  What happened?   Well this journal entry will uncover what happened and you will experience the excitement of the run against time to try to stop someone to do something.     The second journal pursue the adventure and you will team up with adults to try to thwart  the evil plan destined to hurt the way things are on Earth.   But will Tyce and his friends be able to stop them in time?

Of all the books from the series so far, I think I enjoyed this one better because it is packed with suspense and action.   I know that when Alex picks up the books to read them himself, he won’t be able to stop by this point and will just want to know what will happen next.   I know because he is a copy of me and right now I can’t wait to pursue the reading of the last book and discover how it will end.

This book is a science fiction genre and might not please every kids.  But I think it has enormous potential as it is a great series to discover.    If you are wondering which books to put in your son or daughter hands for summer readings, I would like to suggest the Robot Wars series.

Robot Wars Book 4 Counterattack is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.
