My Thoughts

This book is packed with interesting information related to food.  Let's admit it sometimes it is hard to follow nutrition and dietary recommendation.   Written by 

The book is divided into 6 sections:  Food Fundamentals, Storing and Cooking, Types of Food, Drinks, Diets, as well as Food and Environment.

Food Fundamentals: In this section, you will learn about the basics of nutrition, how hunger works, flavor, smell and taste, nutrients and much more.

Storing and Cooking: This section presents all you need to know about preservation from storing and freezing, fermentation, how food is processed, additives and how to cook food.

Types of Food: This section presents all the types of food that can be eaten and prepared.

Drinks: This section concentrates on all the different type of drinks that can accompany our meals.

Diets: Diets, what are they?  How many are there? What are the differences between them? You questions are answered in this section.

Food and Environment: How does food affect our environment is explained in this portion of the book.

The text is easy to understand.  The book contains numerous illustrations and graphs to help the visualization of what you read as well as understand the differences between different techniques of cooking and how food affect your body.

If you are interested in learning more about food, this book is one to explore.

Eyewitness DVDs

Through the years I had the privilege to present a wide variety of Eyewitness DVDs on this blog. The Eyewitness DVDs would be great in this time of social distancing to allow your kids to learn on specific subjects like plant, insect, ocean, birds and so on.

I have two other ones that I would like to present this morning. 

EYEWITNESS DVD INSECT

Like it or not during our spring, summer and fall seasons (at least in Canada anyways) we are surrounded but a wide range of insects.   Discover a world of creatures that are industrious, sociable, and environmentally useful.   Unfortunately for some of them, we do not have the patience to have them around us buzzing constantly in our ears.

But there is much to learn on these creatures.  This DVD will allow you to explore the wonders of the insect world through macro photography and 3-D graphics.  You will observe a queen wasp building her nest, a caterpillar devouring a leaf, a damselfly nympho emerging as an adult and so much more.

EYEWITNESS DVD WEATHER

Weather is something we experience day after day in life. Sunshine. Rain. Snow. These are only a sample of what weather is.   Sometimes it can be deadly like lighting, extreme winds, hail... 

This DVD takes you on a tour of Earth's turbulent atmosphere and reveals the forces that make our day a nice one or a disastrous one. 

Conclusion

Both of these DVD can make a wonderful unit study for your kids when learning from home - whether you are a veteran homeschooler or a new one (voluntarily or not due to Covid-19).

Each DVD are about 25 minutes in length and are packed with information that is interesting and educative at the same time.

Smithsonian Maker Lab Books

DK has published some very neat book on science in partnership with the Smithsonian.  Each of the books contains some fun experiments that can be done at home.   I had the opportunity to review two of these books.

Maker Lab – 28 Super Cool Projects offers step-by-step activities appropriate for kids ages 8–12.  Each activity is ranked easy, medium, or hard, with an estimated time frame for completion. Each of them also require only household materials that your children can use to build an exploding volcano, race balloon rocket cars, construct a solar system, make a lemon battery, and more.   The book contains four sections: Food for Thought, Around the Home, Water World, and The Great Outdoors.   Each of the experiments included in this book will open up the world of science for your child.

Maker Lab Outdoors – 25 Super Cool Projects contains projects that focus on Earth and the environment, plants and animals, weather, water, and physics, bringing science learning home and into the backyard. Young scientists can build a wormery and learn about compost, crack rocks with water and learn about freezing and thawing, build and launch a water rocket to see Newton's laws in action, and more.  Through the pages of this book you will have the possibility to explore nature in ways that are mind blowing.  The child will be encourage to experiment with nature watch, with the world of weather, with water power and with earth and sky. 

  

My Thoughts

What I like about the DK books is that not only does it gives the instructions to complete an experiment but it also explains the science behind it.  Both books also have incredible photography to illustrate the experiments.  A step-by-step comprehensible instructions and detailed explanations make these books a must for fun activities to do with your kids.   There are even explanations on how it works and real-word science tidbits to make the child realize that you can find the reaction of the experiment in the real world.

One of the book also contains experiments done with food – like the baked Alaska for example.  It is an amazing way to make the child to make food and also discover the science behind it.   Seeing the instructions makes it possible to do it without worrying to mess it up.   It is a more difficult experiment for sure and I would strongly suggest the presence of an adult when doing it but reading the science behind it will encourage you to do a little magic trick for your family one evening.   A cool magic trick if you ask me.  Your kids won’t believe their eyes when the ice cream won’t melt when you put the cake in the oven!  Not only will you be able to explain why the meringue acted as an insulator for the ice cream but you will be able to tie this to the awesome explanation why igloos do keep the warmth as well.

These books are also great to keep your kids busy during the summer months or during PD Days or holidays.    Nothing can build more memories than to spend time with your children doing quick and fun experiments and discover why it does what it does.  

And if these two books are not enough, DK also has published a Star Wars Maker Lab which contains 20 amazing projects.  This specific book will teach your budding Padawan how to become a Master of science, in both the real world and the Star Wars galaxy. Using clear step-by-step instructions, the book guides home scientists and makers through each exciting experiment–from making Jabba's gooey slime or a hovering landspeeder, to an Ewok catapult and a glowing Gungan Globe of Peace. My Thoughts

Let take a trip back in time for a second or two.  Remember the 1970s?  That is when I was a child and I remember the time when I got the new toy from Mattel called Slime.   It was gooey and disgustingly green.  It will ooze between your fingers and you could make a blob out of it.  And they came out with a purple one as well as some with trinkets in it.   Ahhhh! My mom totally disliked it but I loved it.   Not sure how much it cost back then but it must have been as pricey as the other stuff that is a rage nowadays.   Anyhow, I remember the Slime vividly and when I saw this book I knew it would be a great one to review just for my daughter.   

This book contains over  30 recipes of slime to do based on either clear craft glue or PVA glue mixed with other ingredients like food coloring, glitter glue, beads, and so on.   There are two main sections in this book – Nonedible Slime and Edible Slime.  Wait! What?  Yes there is such a thing as edible slime believe it or not.  And us parents that keep saying to our kids – do not play with your food!  LOL  Oh well… I guess sometimes it is ok to play with the food.

In the nonedible slime section, you will find the basic recipe to make slime but you will also get recipes to make stretchy slime, fluffy slime, see-through slime, serious putty, starry slime, party slime, crunchy slime, smelly slime, glitter slime, popping slime, slime in all sort of colors, gold slime, unicorn slime, metallic slime, sand slime, monster slime, snow slime, fake snot, pompom slime, alphabet slime, winter wonderland slime, dinosaurs in amber, bubbling swamp slime, bubble slime, glow-in-the-dark slime.  The edible slime section will have recipes like the chocolate goo, the bear necessities made out of gummy bears, the striped slime made out of Starburst chewy candies and the “sticky,icky, tasty” slime made out of marshmallow.

Some of these recipes look more fun to do that other ones.  But each are special in their own way.  I would personally stay away from the fake snot recipe but my daughter is having a Christmas theme at camp this summer and I think the Winter Wonderland Slime would be perfect for it!  I just need to find some snowflake confetti somehow….  

The book would be perfect for this summer to allow you child to have fun in a different kind of way.  And who know…. maybe your child is a budding entrepreneur and will find a way to make this new passion of making slime into a small business.

My Thoughts

I’ve always been fascinated with how the human body works.  This time around DK has published a great book to explain about the facts about the human body you have always wanted to discover without necessarily google it.   This book will provide a ton of information about our body and how its intricated parts work together.

The tables of content will start highlight all the areas covered in this book.  The first section will highlight everything regarding the cell and how it works as well a genes, stem cells and DNA.   The second part of the book explores everything concerning the biggest organ – the skin – as well as the bones.   The third section of the book will specifically cover the muscles and the brain.   The fourth section is specifically oriented toward all our senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.  The fifth section of the book covers the heart as well as the lungs and will highlights all you ever wanted to know about it.  The sixth section will cover the digestive systems and how it is necessary to provide food to our body.    The seventh section gears mostly on diseases, immune system and how to stay healthy.   The eight section covers hormones and diabetes.  The ninth section will be all about the reproductive systems and finally the tenth section highlights the emotions, sleep and memories.

Each pages of this book includes not only information about specific subjects but also numerous illustrations to demonstrate and visualize how the different parts of our body work in order to allow us to live.

I find this book to be a great reference to have at home and learn more about our bodies.   It is always interesting to expand our knowledge on the human body and this book will indeed explain things that maybe your own doctor cannot explain properly for you.   This book is definitively something to have in your personal library and the kind of book that you can go back to anytime you desire.

My Thoughts

This book is a great resource for anything and everything related to the Star Wars universe.  The reader will discover, through the pages of this book, all the geography, nature, history, culture, science and technology that has made Star Wars popular through the years.    Whether you are a huge fan of Star Wars or just getting introduce to this world that your friend or family member keeps talking about, this book will open up the whole universe and will inform you about all the characters and more.

I am always impressed with DK books but this particular one based on Star Wars is a jewel in itself because of all the details included through the pages.   You will have all the different droids at the thumb of your fingers, you will be able to discover all the helmets, outfits, armor used by the characters, explore the aquatic creatures that can be found on different worlds and discover much more in these pages.

The images in this book are stunning.  The information will provide hours of reading for anyone interested in the Star Wars universe.   Do you have a reluctant reader that is a huge fan of Star Wars – this book is definitively for him or her.   I believe strongly that a child can enjoy reading if we place a book on their interests.  Consequently if a child enjoy Star Wars and desire to learn more about it, this book is definitively the best one to have because it is well designed and contains a ton of information on the Star Wars Universe.

The book not only covers all the movies but also all the other television shows based on Star Wars.  This means that sometimes you will have pictures of cartoons or real life characters.   Seeing that all is linked together, I think it is good that DK has included everything from the galaxy, far, far away.

My Thoughts

As I mentioned in a previous post, our family will be driving to Florida sometime this summer.  And being the kind of person who enjoy learning more about the animals and birds I decided it would be fun to discover some of the birds that we might encounter while there.   This is why I requested the book Birds of Florida which is part of the Smithsonian Handbooks published at DK.

This book is packed with beautiful birds that can be seems in Florida or on the coast of this state.   The first 35 pages of the book will explain how the book works and the visual references within the book.  Then you can discover more about the anatomy of birds along with the different part of a bird on a two-page presentation. The book also highlights the variations within species, how to identify birds, how to identify birds in flight, their silhouettes, behavior, how to do birdwatching and how to be a better birder.   Once you have read these pages, you can start exploring Florida in order to discover the birds in the book.  Make sure you bring binoculars as well when your are going out that way you won’t miss any beautiful specimen that might come across your path.

Each pages included in this book contains photographs, illustrations, a list of similar birds, a distribution map with indication as to if the bird is a permanent resident/summer resident/winter resident, flight patterns, nest identification, habitat, and much more.

This book is definitively the kind of book I would bring when visiting a state.   The fact that is contains specifically the bird found in Florida is particularly nice because that means that the book is easy to carry.  Mind you it contains over 400 pages so it is quite thick but the size is perfect to slip it in a backpack.  No matter where we are, I will bring this book with us at all times.  As a matter of fact, I plan to leave it in the truck so that way we will not forget it when we leave the RV.   That way it will always be available for us to check it.   I also plan to bring it with us when we go on the coasts to go to the beach.  

Needless to say for Floridians or visitors that enjoy birds, this book is definitively a must have.   And even if you go to Florida for a few weeks, you can always leave the book behind for someone else to use it.    I am looking forward to discover the birds of Florida with my family – especially since we will be camping in state parks which I suspect will have some birds to observe.

My Thoughts

This is a marvelous book that presents animals found on planet Earth.   From the habitats to the various kind of animals in the animal kingdom, this book will provide information for your personal knowledge.  Whether you desire to learn more about a particular species or simply like to peruse in a book to learn whenever you feel like it, this book is a gem to have in your living room.

For each animal you will discover a map indicating where it is found, some data field highlighting the length, weight and so on as well as habitat symbol and information about the animal.    The book also provide the Latin name as well as the common name of the animal.

 

  

The book also contains a multitude of illustrations showing the animals in their environment.  Sometimes, you will have the opportunity to read a bit more about a certain animal due to the fact that a species might have different kinds.   For example, the elephants information covers about a page and a half.  The other half of the second page will present the African savanna elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asiatic elephant.   The main information highlights what is common about the three different kinds of elephants and then each section presenting a specific elephant will highlight what is particular for this specific kind.

From as far as I can remember, I always loved looking and reading books about animals.   This book is fabulous in many ways because you can sit by yourself or with your children in order to read from it.   It is a great book to have while researching a particular animal too.   The cover of the book is special too because some of its details is slightly above the regular cover.   Through the pages of this book, you will discover the fabulous world of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates.

My Thoughts

Do you have a child who really love the LEGO DC Comics sets and enjoy learning more about the super heroes in the DC Universe?  If so I just have the book for you.  This gem of a book will provide all the information on the DC Heroes with the twist of LEGO mini figures.

Not only will you child be able to learn more about the greatest heroes and where they came from but he/she will be able to read more about the villains themselves.   A fun two pages spread will allow him/her to discover who is his/her alter ego by answering quick questions and following the arrows.  A complete list of the DC sets in LEGO is also included at the end of the book. 

The best part I find is that this book contains an exclusive minifigure – exclusive as in not available anywhere else by the way….  exclusive as in unique…. exclusive as is priceless.   This minifigure is only available on the regular edition of the book – not the library binding version so be careful when purchasing…  This minifigure is Wonder Woman and it also has her golden lasso.  So if you desire to possess a unique minifigure – you need to purchase this book!

The book is perfect for kids (and adults).  But I find it could be a good incentive for reluctant readers who loves anything about DC and LEGO.  I find that in order to be interesting a book needs to be about something we enjoy reading about.   And this book contains information about DC Super Heroes and Villains as well as LEGO minifigures images.

This would make a great gift for a birthday or Christmas.

My Thoughts

This past year, we have been blessed with numerous good movies in theaters and one of them is definitively the Wonder Woman movie.   I thought it was a great movie to see and I think that Wonder Woman is a great comic book character.   But how does someone who is not into comics that much can learn more about this specific character?   How can a young girl who desire to learn more about Wonder Woman can do it without spending a ton of money in older comic books issues?   Well search no longer because DK has published a marvelous book where you will be able to read and discover all you need to know about Wonder Woman.

In this book, you will learn about the key themes and storylines in the comics as well as discover detailed character studies and much more.  The book provides information about Wonder Woman as well as her allies and enemies, her history, her mother, the Amazonian warrior, her apparel, and more.   Honestly I could provide a detailed list of what is covered in the book but there is so much in it that it would be long to write.   However, the following ages (in comic books a new series is referred to ages depending of the time period it was published): Golden Age (WWII period of time), Silver Age (late 50s to 60s), Bronze Age (70s and 80s), Dark Age (90s), Modern Age (2000s), New Age (after Flashpoint event (2010s).   With the reboot of the series which happened a few times through the years, it makes sense to divide the book into the specific ages.

The Build Your Own Adventure sets, available through DK Canada, are very interesting for LEGO fans.  Not only does it contain a book which provides ideas to build interesting scenes but you will also find Lego pieces.   This specific Build Your Own Adventure is based on DC Comics Super Heroes and will give you a unique mini figure – Green Lantern.   This mini figure is only available in this LEGO Build Your Own Adventure set so if you desire to obtain it, you have to purchase this fabulous DK book. 

The box contains 84 pieces of LEGO which will allow you to build Green Lantern and his spaceship.   Both design are exclusive to this book.   The book itself will allow you to obtain 50 building ideas linked to the world of DC Comics.   My kids are pretty fond of DC characters and knows quite a bit about them.   This book and the LEGO pieces will join the other kits they have.  And with a son who enjoys doing stop motion videos with his LEGO you can be sure that Green Lantern and his spaceship will join the rest of his mini figures.

The book itself is divided into five chapters which provides you with ideas to build your own stop motion movie.   Some pieces might be necessary in order to build the scenes but nevertheless there are fun building time and play time guaranteed with this book.

As you go through the book you will have a good visual as well informative text to help you build the scenes.  However, do not expect a step-by-step how to build it information because that is not available.  However, the images are pretty clear in showing you how it looks like.  The only step-by-step instructions available in the book are to build Green Lantern and his spaceship.

If you have a child who enjoy super-heroes and LEGO, you can be certain that he/she will enjoy this special book.   It is a perfect birthday or Christmas gift for DC and LEGO fans.
