Paul Apostle of Christ

A new movie is out in theater this week – Paul Apostle of Christ will bring you in the Roman Prison at the end of the life of Paul – a life that started in persecuting believers to  finish in being the most outspoken missionary for Christ.   I had the opportunity to visualize the movie in advance in order to be able to write about it.    The movie has also been transformed into a book which I will present to you afterwards.

About the movie

Affirm Films brings to vivid life on screen the epic story of Paul, the man who went from persecutor of the church to its most powerful and important proponent. Paul suffers alone in a Roman prison, awaiting his execution under Emperor Nero. Mauritius, the ambitious prison prefect, can hardly see what threat this broken man poses. Once he was Saul of Tarsus, the high-ranking and brutal killer of Christians. Now his faith rattles Rome. At great risk, Luke the Physician visits the aged Paul to comfort and tend to him—and to question, to transcribe and to smuggle out Paul’s letters to the growing community of believers. Amid Nero’s inhuman persecution, these men and women will spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and change the world. Andrew Hyatt directs, Jim Caviezel stars and James Faulkner plays the title role of Paul.

Paul, Apostle of Christ

My Thoughts

Before I signed up for this opportunity, we had taken the time to watch the trailer and we were interested in watching it.   Though I admire the fact that more and more Christian based movies are created, I have been disappointed with the fact that the movie at times are dragging in the storyline.   As I watched this morning, I had questions – Did Luke really visited Paul during his final days? Did Paul really was accused of starting the fires?  Did all the events in the movie really happened this way?   I had a feeling that some of these  scenes were not truly what happened in reality.   I had questions… and some of the answers were found at the end of the book (more on that later).

Though I ended up with questions after having watched the movie, I was able to appreciate the various scenes.  I could see that great thought have been made to make the décor has realistic as possible.  The scenes I particularly enjoyed were the ones filmed in the prison cell of Paul.  I really like that area and how the movie depicted the darkness surrounding Paul during his imprisonment.  At times I had to turn my eyes for some scenes in the movie are hard to swallow. But at the same time it is historically correct with what Nero has done to believers during that period in the Roman Empire.   The costumes were amazing as well depicting the era where the movie is set.

At times in the movie, the conversations between Paul and Luke brought parts of the letters of Paul – bringing back some of the scriptures found in the Bible.   For example, Paul remind Luke that Love is most important and during that conversation they use the words from 1 Corinthians 13.

After watching the movie, I have the feeling that it is not only about Paul himself but also the persecution of the believers during the time when Nero’s reign over Rome because the movie allows you to imagine the life of believers during that era which was not an easy one.

Another note, some scenes are very difficult to watch.  My ten years old daughter had wanted to see it but by the time we could do it it was too later for her.  We are glad she did not watch the movie because even my fourteen years old thought that the scenes of believers used as torches were hard to swallow.

The movie will play at certain theaters.  To discover where it will play, please visit the faith films website – Paul Apostle of Christ.  In Ottawa, the movie will be presented at Silvercity Gloucester and Landmark Cinemas 24 Kanata.

Based on the screenplay by Andrew Hyatt

About the book

His Story Will Change the World, But Only If It's Shared in Time.

Paul, Apostle of Christ is the story of two men. Luke, as a friend and physician, risks his life every time he ventures into the city of Rome to visit Paul, who is held captive in Nero's bleakest prison cell. Before Paul's execution, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of "the Way" and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. But Nero is determined to rid Rome of Christians.

Paul has survived so much--floggings, shipwreck, starvation, stoning, hunger and thirst, cold and exposure--yet as he waits for his appointment with death, he is haunted by the shadows of his past. He wonders if he has been forgotten . . . and if he has the strength to finish well.

Two men struggle against a determined emperor and the frailties of the human spirit in order to bequeath the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.

My Thoughts

As I am writing this, I can honestly say that I enjoy the book more than the movie.    I find there are more details in the book – though I can recall certain scenes of the movie as I read it.

The book itself goes through the same events depicted in the movie but with more details I find.  However, keep in mind that the book was written based on the screenplay.  The book also contains photos from the movie – either characters, scenes as well as the writer/director with the actors. My only disappointment would be that I wish there would have been a section in the book explaining some of the Roman words used in it like lararium or paterfamilias for example. I could google it mind it but having a description of what it means would be nice.

So I mentioned that I had questions after I watched the movie and some answers were given at the end of the book.  For example was Paul really accused that he was behind the fire of Rome?   Well historically, Nero did blame the Christians for the fire but there is no historical evidence that Paul was accused of the arson.   However you will also find stretched information in the book as well – in one section Paul recall being a young man while studying in Jerusalem and recall a time when a young boy was speaking to the religious leaders in the Temple when his parents came to find him.   He says he didn’t know then that it was Yeshua but now he realize that it was him.   At the end of the book, the author herself says that she guesses Paul’s age and put his timeline alongside the one of Christ.  However, there is no evidence that their paths crossed at the point in time.

As I mentioned above I personally much prefer the book than the movie even though some scenes in the movie were speaking to me on an artistic level.   However, I am a bit disappointed on how the novel has stretched some of the truth but adding on what the Bible tells us.  It makes me uncomfortable when authors do this because it feels as though it is adding to the events.   There is no proof that Paul was present when young Jesus were speaking to teachers in the Temple.  So why adding this image in the mind of believers who will be reading the book I wonder…

Some people won’t mind have added details (even if not historical) in a book.  Personally when I read a book based on history, I would prefer to have as  much truth as possible.   Just know that this particular book is based on a screenplay and might offer some historical theories that are no proven or verified.

All Saints–the book

Cover ArtAll Saints – The Surprising True Story of How Refugees from Burma Brought Life to a Dying Church
Written by Michael Spurlock and Jeanette Windle
Published at Bethany House

About the Book

The True Story Behind the Powerful Film ALL SAINTS.

Newly ordained, Michael Spurlock's first assignment is to pastor All Saints, a struggling church with twenty-five devoted members and a mortgage well beyond its means. The best option may be to close the church rather than watch it wither any further. But when All Saints hesitantly risks welcoming a community of Karen refugees from Burma--former farmers scrambling for a fresh start in America--Michael feels they may be called to an improbable new mission.

Michael must choose between closing the church and selling the property--or listening to a still, small voice challenging the people of All Saints to risk it all and provide much-needed hope to their new community. Together, they risk everything to plant seeds for a future that might just save them all.
Discover the true story that inspired the film while also diving deeper into the background of the Karen people, the church, and how a community of believers rally to reach out to those in need, yet receive far more than they dared imagine.

My Thoughts

Back in August, we had the privilege to watch the movie All Saints.  We had enjoyed the movie and when I was approached with the possibility to read the book I immediately was interested.  I know that often a movie won’t do the justice of the book itself.   And I was not disappointed with my decision to review this book.

First and foremost let me tell you that if you have watched the movie (or planning to watch it), you definitively need to read the book as well.   Why?  Well the book All Saints is packed with historical background that will unfold right under your eyes as you read it.  Not only will you read about the past of Michael Spurlock and his family but you will also follow the Karen refugees to their new life in the U.S. as well as the life of Ye Win who will become the leader of the Karen refugees.   Slowly, the story will set itself and you will follow the characters as they come to a point of crossing each other’s paths.

I personally find the book very interesting as it goes back and forth between the life of Michael and the life of Ye Win.   Going back and forth between the main characters is intriguing in many ways because you get exactly what they have experience during the same period of time.  The movie itself doesn’t do justice to the book I find but it was a great springboard to the whole story that is written in the pages of this book.

As I read through the pages of this book, I was reminded that we should not judge too quickly when strangers come through the doors of our church because these people might be sent by God himself for a purpose that we cannot even imagine at this point in time.   The book is an eye opener on how newcomers can be a blessings for a church.

The book is available for purchase at your favorite bookstore, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Words of Grace

By Jacqui Grace and Dee Arrand
Published at Bethany House

About the book

Be Amazed by God's Grace!

Bring new joy to your time in God's Word by incorporating beauty and creativity. As a gentle tonic for the busyness and worries of your life, this travel-sized coloring book devotional will help you focus your attention and calm your hurried soul.

Each page spread includes Scripture, devotional thoughts, and images to color that are all designed to reconnect you with the God who knows your every need. Grab your colored pencils, crayons, or markers and set yourself free to create. But most importantly: relax, have fun, and be blessed by God's grace.

My Thoughts

When I received this book to review, my first impression was primary based on the size of it.   The book is not very large nor thick for that matter.  But there is a saying that says “do not judge a book by its cover” right?  So who was I to think that this book was less important than another devotional which has hundreds of page?   I proceeded to explore the book before passing any further judgment on it.

This is a devotional book that will also allow the reader to color the pages while you reflect on what you have just read. This book contains exactly twenty-eight devotions divided into four weeks based on specific themes.  The themes are the following:

  • Week 1: Knowing Who You Are
  • Week 2: Intimacy with God
  • Week 3: When Life Gets Tough
  • Week 4: Now This is Living!

Each week contain a devotion for each day.  Through these devotions, you will learn to discover who you are, how to live intimately with God, remember that you can rely on Him at all times, and spread you wings in the world.   You can spend more time reflecting on the teaching you have just read by coloring the opposite page.  Sometimes you will have a little drawing on the devotion’s page as well.

IMG_8830

In conclusion, I think this little devotion book is fun for whoever likes to color as well.   I am saying this because recently as I was drawing in one of my books, someone looked at what I was doing and said “Oh you are one of those…”  I was surprised but when the person told me she really hate coloring then I could understand her comment better.  However, that small comment had other consequences on me like doubts and insecurity creeping slowly…. but in the end I decided to embrace my coloring because I find it is relaxing and it provides healing in my life.

My Thoughts

Since last year, we have seen a huge demand of adult coloring books on the market.  The craze is there right now but I sometimes wonder how long it will last.  I discovered bible art journaling a few years ago as I was drawing some images in a sketchbook.  But what I didn’t know was that there was suck a thing as a bible journal…. which I stumbled upon back in the late fall of 2014.   However, I was very restricted with money and decided to use a bible that I had at home.   When the local Christian book store closed its door in the spring of 2015, I decided to splurge a bit and get myself an ESV  journaling bible.  Since then, I draw and highlight the scriptures that speak to me in three bibles – one being an interleaved New Testament.

10926388_10152935064051251_1890763763562790297_n10897939_10152928630406251_637445358737432689_n

10982469_10152982239566251_1173406884862266186_n12289491_10153642502861251_5007497442538093519_n

I knew that coloring books was getting more and more popular last year but I never really was attracted to it.   I couldn’t justify the price to pay for one.    So I was pleased to see this new title to be offered one day so I could review it.   I had mixed feelings about it because I usually prefer to have freedom in what I draw.   So I didn’t know how much I would enjoy coloring in it.

First of all, I totally support the fact that coloring can help remove the stress you might have in your life.  I know that it helped me quite a bit over the past year.   Secondly, this specific adult coloring book will allow you to memorize the scripture which I also think will be beneficial for you as you store the words of God in your heart and mind.   Thirdly, this adult coloring is different from other ones in the market simply because for each page of coloring you can do, you will also have a page to record notes and prayers you might have while coloring as  you can see in the image below.

IMG_5799

However, as you can see the writing is a bit small to color in.  Personally, I would have prefered a bigger font in order to color in the letters to highlight the scripture.   I would have been better I think.    I find the fact that the lettering is also in italic to make it more difficult to color in.   But then again, I am picky when it comes to coloring.  I am used to do my own lettering in my bibles and I have been more independent that way for quite some time.

Having a Christian adult coloring book is nice because if I don’t feel like bringing one of the bibles with me when I go somewhere I could bring this coloring book and some pencils to color while waiting.    I find it peaceful to do so when I feel somewhat overwhelmed with things happening.

Esther

9780764216954Esther – Royal Beauty
Written by Angela Hunt
Published at Bethany House

About the book

When an ambitious tyrant threatens genocide against the Jews, an inexperienced young queen must take a stand for her people.

When Xerxes, king of Persia, issues a call for beautiful young women, Hadassah, a Jewish orphan living in Susa, is forcibly taken to the palace of the pagan ruler. After months of preparation, the girl known to the Persians as Esther wins the king's heart and a queen's crown. But because her situation is uncertain, she keeps her ethnic identity a secret until she learns that an evil and ambitious man has won the king's permission to exterminate all Jews--young and old, powerful and helpless. Purposely violating an ancient Persian law, she risks her life in order to save her people...and bind her husband's heart.

My Thoughts

In this biblical fiction, you will discover how Angela Hunt views the life of Hadassah a.k.a. Queen Esther was in the time of the ruling of Xerxes, King of Persia.   Through the pages of the this book, you will be transported in the time of the ruling of Xerxes and the event that will bring young Hadassah to become Queen Esther.   This book also novelize the story behind the plot to kill the Jews and ultimately how Esther herself put her life in danger in order to save her own people.

I don’t mind historical fiction but I am a bit uneasy on taking a biblical story and novelize it.   Though I must admit that reading this book makes you wonder if her life was like the one portrayed in the novel.   The author was able to portray the life in Persia and compared the Persian women with their Jewish neighbors.  You can see the differences of lifestyle and almost smell the odors from the market.  You can close your eyes and visualize the life of the queen, how the parties were thrown and even be a witness of the life of the slaves in the palace.

As much as I admire the fact that the author has penned a great story around a well known biblical account, I ponder on the purpose of doing so.   I am torn inside between sticking to the book of Esther in the Bible and allowing my mind to venture into what might have been to be in her shoes, how life was in an harem, what Hadassah really thought so many years ago and what life was for her as a queen.  How did she really interact with the king?  Did she really loved him?    What was her feeling at every steps of her life?    Part of me would prefer to personally imagine it.  Part of me enjoys having the novelize version of Angela Hunt.

If you enjoy historical fiction – more specifically biblical historical fiction – I think you will enjoy Esther – Royal Beauty.

Esther is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

The Patmos Deception

9780764211393The Patmos Deception
Written by Davis Bunn
Published at Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing

About the book

An Ancient Island Holds an Ancient Secret . . .

Nick Hennessy, a young Texas journalist yearning for his big break, finds himself in Europe--his assignment, to investigate the alarming disappearance of invaluable Grecian antiquities. Nick has the credentials--and cover ID--to unearth the truth. And he knows just the researcher to help him...

Carey Mathers, fresh from her studies in forensic archeology, has accepted a job with the prestigious Athens Institute for Antiquities--a dream come true, really, particularly when the Greek isle of Patmos, where the Apostle John received his vision of the Apocalypse, was a particular focus of her research.

Dimitri Rubinos, for whom the Greek islands represent his life, holds on by his fingernails to the family charter boat business. But his country's economic chaos isn't the only thing that has turned his world on its head...

My Thoughts

I think this is my first Davis Bunn book that I am reading.   And I enthusiastically expected that I would enjoy the book.  But I am half-way through it and the three main characters have not met yet.   Yes I know what is going on –valuable antiques are disappearing from Greeze – and I have graps somewhat how it is done i.e. via boats but I find that the novel is lacking on the action side of things.    I discovered that I personally like it when the action happens faster in a book and will hold you in such a way that you want to read more in order to discover what will happen.  I haven’t gotten this while reading The Patmos Deception.

I originally took this book because I am interested in history and older things. I was expecting a fast pace read and learn more about Greece.   Though the story happens during the hard recent years of Greece when people would loose their jobs and the economy was very difficult in that country, the storyline of this book has not grasp my complete attention which would make me want to read without stopping.

Mind you I think this book would be well loved by the fans of Davis Bunn.   It’s just was not a perfect fit for me.   That doesn’t mean that the book isn’t good.   I suspect that romance will be included in the second half of the book – just by how the things have gone so far – but I am not interested in completing the reading of it.  I am not a huge fan of romance novels and this particular book is classified as a romantic suspense.   For me the suspense isn’t there and the romance made me grow cold with the story.   But then again – I know other women who would enjoy this kind of reading…

Revealing Jesus

imageRevealing Jesus – A 365-Day Devotional
Written by Darlene Zschech
Published at Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group

About the book

Powerful Encounters With the Heart of Our Savior For Every Day.

Do you long for more of God's presence? Do you ache to see Him at work in your life? Do you desire His peace and rest? Renowned worship leader Darlene Zschech invites you to gather with her around the Word of God. Born out of her own yearnings that she poured onto the pages of journals, these meditations and Scriptures reveal Jesus and speak of His finished work--how He tenderly cares for you and wants you to know Him.

Honest, raw, and beautifully written, these devotions will inspire your journey and encourage you in every season. Come, sit at the feet of our Lord, be strengthened in your weakness, embrace His love for you, and breathe in His peace.

My Thoughts

For this particular book, I had decided to do a few weeks of devotions in order to get a feel from it.    So on May 1st, I embarked on a discovery on who Jesus is in my life while reading the daily devotions included in the book.    Each devotions encourages you to dig in the Bible while reading the scripture at the top of the page.  The scriptures included are from different versions of the Bible.   I decided to check out the NIV and NLT when I read something that was different to what I am used too.   Then the author shares about the theme of the day in a one-page devotion.  At the end of the page, you will find a small prayer to help you connect with God.  This prayer can become a stepping stone for a deeper connection with your Father in Heaven.

I have enjoyed going through this devotional during the weeks I used it.   The perspective of the author on various theme like requesting from God, Joy in our lives, worshipping and so on, gives you a fresh look on well-known scriptures.  Each month covers a new side of Jesus that we might have missed or forgotten.  This devotional book reveals various aspects of Christ and how he can be real in our lives even today.    I particularly love her fresh tone and openness in sharing in the devotions.

Even though it’s a year long devotional book, I think you can pick it up anytime during the year and discover Jesus from that part of the year.    Though I find that this book would make a marvelous Christmas gifts for women in your life – whether it’s a mom, mother-in-love, sisters, sisters-in-love, friends or mentors.

Revealing Jesus is available at your favourite bookseller from Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group, even amazon.ca.

The book is also available for the Kindle and Kindle App.

The Guardian

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The Guardian – Book Three of the Home to Hickory Hollow
Written by Beverly Lewis
Published at Bethany House

About the book

Come home to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania--the beloved setting where Beverly Lewis's celebrated Amish novels began--with new characters and new stories of drama, romance, and the ties that draw people together.

When Jodi Winfield comes to Lancaster to house-sit, the last thing she expects to find is a disheveled little girl alone on the side of the road. The young teacher is mystified when she learns there have been no reports of a missing child, and the girl herself is no help, since she can't speak English. It's as if the child appeared out of nowhere.

Then Jodi turns her attention to Hickory Hollow--and the cloistered world of the Old Order Amish--in search of answers.

Who is Beverly Lewis?

Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is The New York Times bestselling author of more than eighty books. Her stories have been published in eleven languages worldwide. A keen interest in her mother's Plain heritage has inspired Beverly to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with The Shunning, which has sold more than one million copies and was recently made into an Original Hallmark Channel movie. In 2007 The Brethren was honored with a Christy Award. She has been interviewed by both national and international media, including Time magazine, the Associated Press, and the BBC. Beverly lives with her husband, David, in Colorado. Visit her Web site at www.beverlylewis.com for more information.

My Thoughts

Once again, the story line from Beverly Lewis will catch you heart and bring you through the novel at an incredible speed.   She has a gifted talent in coming up with situations that you wouldn’t have thought – the child falling from the buggy and lost for a period of time from her family, a young woman finding the child and bringing her back to her family, and then out of the blue that same young woman asked to supply for a couple of months at the one school room.  What a privilege for Jodi to have taught young Amish children!  And to have develop this friendship with the mother of the child she had found.

This is not an Amish love story per say.  Yes there is some courting going on and couples that are planning to marry but essentially this book has drama and will open the eyes of the main character to the benefits of family.  Jodi Winfield is going through mourning and even though there is much joy in her future something inside of her is fighting about her decision of not having children.   But her encounter with the Esh family and especially little Sarah as well as her interaction with the Wise Woman will make her realize that in the end the memories of the ones you love is more important.

I really enjoyed the book and look forward to read the fourth installment of the Home to Hickory Hollow series which will come out in September – The Secret Keeper.    Beverly Lewis has the talent to intertwine drama and mystery in her Amish novels and it’s probably why I really enjoy reading her.

Watch this little video where Beverly Lewis herself present the inspiration for this novel.

Though Mountains Fall

9780764208409Though Mountains Fall
Written by Dale Cramer
Published by Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group

About the book

Inspired by actual events!

“I want you to promise you will always be my sister.”

There were tears in Miriam’s eyes as their foreheads touched and Rachel whispered, “No matter what. Always.”

Now in its fourth year, the Amish settlement in Mexico is thriving.  But as new settlers arrive, sons and daughter marry, babies are born, and crops grow thick, a storm looms on the horizon.  And Caleb Bender knows – perhaps better than anyone – that the worst of storms don’t come from the western skies.

They come on horseback.

When their very existence is threatened, the Amish turn to the Mexican government for help, only to discover that the rulers of men are fickle and security is an illusion.  Tried by fire and riven by war, Caleb and Domingo come to understand that the kingdom of God is not to be found in land or buildings or gold or armies, but in the hearts of peaceful men trying to feed their families.

Watching helplessly as daughter Rachel, Miriam, and Emma are drawn inexorably toward their separate destinies, Caleb is forced to confront the most important decision of his life.

Who is Dale Cramer?

Dale Cramer is the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed novel Levi's Will, based on the story of Dale's father, a runaway Amishman. Dale's latest series, THE DAUGHTERS OF CALEB BENDER, is based on an Amish colony in the mountains of Mexico where three generations of his family lived in the 1920s. He currently lives in Georgia with his wife of 36 years, two sons and a Bernese Mountain Dog named Rupert. Visit him on his Web site at www.dalecramer.com

My Thoughts

I had the privilege to discover Dale Cramer books a couple of years ago and I go hooked on his style.   I have read and reviewed the previous two titles of the Daughters of Caleb Bender series – Paradise Valley and The Captive Heart – and didn’t hesitate when I was offered to review the conclusion.

It was good to reconnect with characters that I have learned to love and enjoy.   Knowing that this novel is based on actual events that happened makes it even more special I find.   Life is full of unexpected things happening and it’s important to trust God in all of it.   But when events brings fear in the life of the Amish, they have no choice but to move on.   Before these drastic events arrive, happier events will come to the community though one of them will bring distance between some members.   Through the pages of this book, you will discover the power of forgiveness and wisdom.   You will also discover how a dramatic event will turn one of the character to become what I would say legalistic and making a vow that deep down you know it isn’t realistic.

While in Mexico, a particular event happens to one of the grand-kids of Caleb Bender and someone tells the mother that her son will become a peacemaker.   The way the book finishes, I am left wondering if there will be another series about the grown-up grand-kids of Caleb Bender and how this little Moses will bring peace in his family.    I can see that the author has laid down the foundation of a future story if he chooses to and I sure hope that he will do because I really like the fact that it is based on actual events.

This book is the conclusion of the series of three books.  I don’t find that it can be read independently as it will refer to previous events that happened in the two first books.   Consequently, I strongly suggest that the reader would read Paradise Valley and The Captive Heart before jumping in Though Moutains FallThe Daughters of Caleb Bender is a great Amish historical fiction.

My Thoughts

Purpose.  The word that attracted my eye when I first saw the cover.  Then the vase and its brilliant purple colors spoke to me.  Purple is the color of royalty and as a daughter of God I just enjoy seeing this color.   Then I read the description and was hooked to the words.   I knew it was a book I would enjoy reading so I requested it to review.

There are six section in this book each containing two chapters.

  • Embrace Your Purpose – Believe You’re Called & Love Your Story
  • Trust God’s Timing – Wait on God & Face Your Fears
  • Hear God’s Voice – Discern Your Preparation & Silence Your Enemy
  • Believe God’s Word – Follow His Lead & Engage Your Faith
  • Walk by Faith – Find High Ground & Stay the Course
  • Take New Territory – Take New Land & Last Long, Finish Strong

Reading this was a breath of fresh air for me.  I am currently embarking on a journey with a ministry that touched me in numerous ways.  I believe this ministry could help numerous men and women in my city.   And reading encouragements poured through the pages of this book help me to get a better perspective of what God is doing in my life.    I so connected with the four seasons the author speak of at the end of book and I could identify the times in my life where I went through a specific season.   I have gleaned a multitude of ideas on how I can pursue my growing in Christ.   One of these was the idea of praying for the protection and blessing a woman that I admire instead of pondering why she is successful and how she seems to be in tune with God.   Because in reality, I don’t know everything in the life of that woman.  So switching to a blessing prayer makes sense.    And while doing so we are also blessed in ways we can’t even imagine.

Each time I finished one chapter. I simply wanted more from the author on this subject.   She also incorporated specific examples from her own life through the pages of this book.  Reading her story made me getting closer to her because at times I could related.  Other times I could sense I didn’t experience the same thing as her but in the end I could understand the issue she was speaking about.    As I read, one specific scripture touched me.  Ephesians 2:10 which says:

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.  (NLT)

I love this Scripture because I know I am a work in progress.   I have hills to conquered and valleys to rest in.   This book also encouraged me to pursue homeschooling my kids because God has put this desire in my heart.  I realized that not every day will be easy and not every child of mine will be compliant but in the end I am doing it for God.    In a time of the year where I doubt myself every year because of winter stretching, it will a blessing to read Your Beautiful Purpose and be reminded that there are different ways to serve God – in small and big ways.

I suspect that I will re-read this book in the future because it was such an eye opener for me.  I highly recommend it to every woman who desire to discover the purpose God has in their lives.

For each chapter, the book also offers a study guide for personal or group use.   A DVD study companion is also available separately.

Your Beautiful Purpose is available at your favourite bookseller from Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group, even amazon.ca and amazon.com

My Thoughts

I will admit I hesitated before requesting this book.   First, there were two other books that I wanted to review from the list I received from Graf-Martin Communications.  There was also the fact that this title was a fantasy and when it comes to this genre I must admit that I am quite picky.   I don’t like any fantasy per say.  I have preferences.   So I didn’t know what to expect from this new author in the fantasy genre.    Would it be good or would I get totally disinterested within a few chapter?   So I proceeded to read the excerpt and my curiosity was picked.   I wanted to read it.   Besides, I was in need to a novel type of book for the month of February.   So I requested it.

As soon as the book arrived, I started reading it.  Somewhere in the first chapter, I was hooked.   The author had caught my attention and was able to make me wanting more as soon as I finished one chapter.    In the past few years of reviewing books on this blog, not many authors have been able to do this to me.    I had trouble putting the book down but for the sake of our homeschool and my much needed sleep, I had to do it.    I finished the book this morning and the story keep me on edge right to the end of it.   I want more.  I want to know what will happen next.  What will be the outcome for Errol and the rest of the characters in the series?   I am curious and wished I could have book two in my hands right now!   But I have to wait until it is published later this year.   Can I be patient?  I think so.   Waiting will only stir my interest in a way.

The story is well written and will keep you interested from the first chapter to the epilogue of the book.   You will close the book at the end thinking “No!  I want to know what will happen…”    The author is amazingly gifted in keeping the reader’s attention and stirring his/her interest in the story.    I even think that youth would love this novel if they enjoy reading the titles from C.S. Lewis (Narnia), J.R.R. Tolkien (Hobbit & Lord of the Rings), and Christopher Paolini (Eragon).    These are three authors I really enjoy in the fantasy genre and I think Patrick W. Carr could easily be added to this group of amazing authors.

If you like the fantasy genre, you will undoubtedly love this new title.  This book is a fabulous read for vacation or R&R time at home.   It would also be a great book for youth just to entertain them in the midst of studies.

Want to read an excerpt of the book before purchasing it?  No problem.  You can do so on the Bethany House website.  But I warn you, you might get hooked with the story at a rapid rate.

Great news !  Book two of the series is schedule to come out in July 2013!   The title will be The Hero’s Lot and after reading the details of it I can’t hardly wait to discover what will happen next.

Real Life Real Miracles

9780764210747Real Life Real Miracles – True stories that will help you believe
Written by James L. Garlow & Keith Wall
Published at Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group

About the book

Is God Still Doing Miracles Today? Absolutely!

These real-life, credible stories of miraculous experiences, gathered by the authors of Miracles Are for Real, reveal that God is still very active in the world. Each gripping story is sure to encourage and inspire, offering hope and a sense of wonder.

• When Steve rolled his car, he should have been killed. Why didn't he die that day?
• Caleb and Penny moved to a poor part of town to serve their community. But when one group of neighbors makes and sells drugs, will God's angels protect them?
• Bob's MS was getting progressively worse. Could God heal such a debilitating disease?

Whether you've experienced God's miracles or aren't sure if you believe in them, explore fascinating true stories like these and many more. You'll be in awe of God's power as you get a glimpse of how he personally cares for each of his children--including you.

My Thoughts

Do you believe in miracles?   Do you think it happens right now in the 21st century in the North American church?   If not, you really need to read the stories in this book because they are mind blowing.   It will definitively change your perspective in whether or not God is at work in our lives.   I have read some of the stories and will continue to read them to uplift me when I feel discourage.  Like it or not, God is always with us in good times and bad times.  These stories will show you how God showed up in the worse circumstances when you should have lost hope but stuck on His promises.

The book contains over 30 stories that will open your eyes to the fact that God is still performing miracles to this day.  And these stories are not from people  in Asia or Africa where out-of-the-ordinary miracles happens – things like legs growing back where there were none before for example.   These stories are from people like you and me and will touch your heart and make your cry.  God is there with us ALL the time!

I believe in miracles.   I know for certain that we might be here today if God had not taken control of our vehicle as we were driving back from Northern Ontario one day.   You see it was a nice day and we were heading back home after spending some time with my husband family.   We had our Venture van back then and somehow my husband lost control of it.   We were sliding toward the other lane where vehicles were coming quite rapidly and toward the lake on the side of that other lane.   Somehow, the van went back to our lane without my husband doing anything to it and we were still alive.   God was with us.  He protected us and brought us back to the right path.  He took control of our van and brought it back on the road.   My husband stopped the vehicle and was shaking afterward but we were praising God for his rapid response to a very quick prayer.  Yes God is with us no matter what we are going through.  I could expand even further with example of His presence and blessings in our lives.    But this was the most amazing miracle we experience while driving.

I would suggest to take the stories one at a time so that you can ponder on His presence and His interactions in our lives.   The book will definitively show you that miracles do exists in North America in the 21st century.  You just need to be open to it.  Are you willing to read life changing stories?  If so, don’t hesitate to pick up Real Life Real Miracles.    I think you will like it.

About the book

PAUL FALCON AND ANN SILVER: A LOVE STORY

Ann Silver is a cop's cop. As the Midwest Homicide Investigator, she is called in to help local law enforcement on the worst of cases, looking for answers to murder. Hers is one of the region's most trusted investigative positions.

Paul Falcon is the FBI's top murder cop in the Midwest. If the victim carried a federal badge or had a security clearance, odds are good Paul and his team see the case file or work the murder.

Their lives intersect when Ann arrives to pass a case off her desk and onto his. A car wreck and a suspicious death offer a lead on a hired shooter he is tracking. Paul isn't expecting to meet someone, the kind that goes on the personal side of the ledger, but Ann Silver has his attention.

The better he gets to know her, the more Paul realizes her job barely scratches the surface of who she is. She knows spies and soldiers and U.S. Marshals, and has written books about them. She is friends with the former vice president. People with good reason to be cautious about who they let into their lives deeply trust her. Paul wonders just what secrets Ann is keeping, until she shows him the John Doe Killer case file, and he starts to realize just who this lady he is falling in love with really is....

Who is Dee Henderson?

Dee Henderson is the bestselling, award-winning author of 15 previous novels, including the acclaimed O'MALLEY series and UNCOMMON HEROES series. She is a lifelong resident of Illinois. Learn more at www.deehenderson.com.

My Thoughts

I was intrigue and attracted by this book because of its FBI/cop storyline.  What I hadn’t realized was there was a love story intertwined through the chapters.   Probably a good thing because I am not a huge fan of romance novels but this book is absolutely written differently than romance novels.  It contains murders, mystery and secrets.   As the pages are flipped and you advance in the story, you get hooked with the main characters, you wonder what Ann is hiding, and how come the paths of Paul and Ann have not crossed before since they have so many people that are in their lives at the same time.

It was hard for me to put the book down but duties as a mom and teacher to my kids required me to leave the book down every once in a while.    One Friday morning, my oldest son had an appointment at the children’s hospital to check out his ankle that had been put in a 3/4 cast the previous Sunday.   Full Disclosure found its way into my bag and I was able to read quite a bit while we waited.   Turned out that he only had a bad sprain (thank goodness!).

Having a love story happening during the development of murder investigations and a big FBI case is very different.   I really enjoyed discovering who Ann Silver is, how Paul Falcon slowly and surely acquired her trust and fell in love for her, how he took care of her and how she opened up her heart to him.    I am completely in love with the characters an hope that Dee Henderson will write a follow-up book on the story of Paul & Ann.   The book finishes leaving you wanting more and wondering how their life will change in the future.

If you are looking into a great book to read while on the bus or at night, Full Disclosure is a title you need to consider.

The Bridesmaid

ImageThe Bridesmaid – Home of Hickory Hollow book 2
Written by Beverly Lewis
Published at Bethany House

About the Book

Joanna Kurtz has made several trips to the altar, but never as a bride. The young Amishwoman is a closet writer whose stories aren't her only secret.

Eben Troyer hopes to make Joanna his bride--if he can ever leave his parents' farm in Shipshewana, Indiana. Yet Eben's hopes to build a life with Joanna hinge on his brother's return from the English world....

My Thoughts

I received the book on Sept 13th – yes yesterday – and I devoured it throughout the afternoon and evening.  By the time I was reading to sleep at 930pm I had finished the reading.   I don’t think I recall reading a book so fast for a long time.   I guess it helped that my husband was able to get a ticket to go see Ravi Zacharias last night as I was able to pursue the reading.

As I reflect on the story, I can’t help to remember the movie 27 Dresses in which the main character was a bridesmaid of numerous wedding but not a bride herself – until the end of the movie that is.   This story is similar in some ways though it is happening in an Amish community.

Joanne Kurtz has been a bridesmaid a certain number of time but she herself has not found the man with whom she wants to spend her life with.   Nevertheless, she doesn’t despair and pursue writing in her notebook – an activity that she keeps secrest from everybody else.    One day out of the blue she meet someone who lives in Indiana.   And their long distance relationship starts…   Nowadays in our electronic world a long distance relationship could also include facebook and Skype but in the Amish world it is fed with letters and occasional phone calls.   Personally, I find it romantic to send a real letter to someone you love.   I recall when I was dating my husband that he would write often via emails.   I still have these emails from him from our dating days – as well as the special cards…   I cherish them and read them every once in a while.

However, the relationship gets complicated at some point and the two will go on their separate ways.   It is heartbreaking to read about their attempts to go on through life with each other.   But ultimately God is in control and somehow they will realize that they are meant for each other and take necessary steps to be with each other (not without some an amusing situation though).

I am not a huge fan of romances but the Amish kind is particular in itself because there is mystery surrounding the characters sometimes and the settings will always bring you in a place where I would love to experience – life of the Amish.   Though for this particular book, I did found it didn’t contain as much mystery as previous titles from Beverly Amish.    Either her writings have changed or my reading taste are changing.   I don’t know.   I have enjoyed the story but I find that there wasn’t enough mystery surrounding the characters.   If you love Amish novels, you will enjoy reading The Bridesmaid.

The Bridesmaid is available at your favourite bookseller from Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group, even at amazon.ca.

The Deposit Slip

About the book

$10,000,000 Is Missing.

Erin Larson is running out of options. In the wake of her father's death, she found a slim piece of paper--a deposit slip--with an unbelievable amount on it. Only the bank claims they have no record of the money, and trying to hire a lawyer has brought only intimidation and threats. Erin's last chance is Jared Neaton.

How Far Will One Lawyer Go to Find the Money?

When Jared wearied of the shady ethics of his big law firm and started his own, he never expected the wheels to fly off so quickly. One big loss has pushed him to the brink, and it's all he can do to scrape by.

And How Far Will Someone Go to Stop Him?

He's not sure if Erin's case is worth the risk, but if the money is real, all his problems could vanish. When digging deeper unleashes something far more dangerous than just threats, both Jared and Erin must decide the cost they're willing to pay to discover the truth.

Who is Todd M. Johnson?

Todd M. Johnson has practiced as an attorney for over 30 years, specializing as a trial lawyer. A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Minnesota Law School, he also taught for two years as adjunct professor of International Law and served as a US diplomat in Hong Kong. This is his debut novel. He lives outside Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his wife and daughter. Visit his website at www.authortoddjohnson.com.

My Thoughts

I am always a little skeptic when I take a debut novel because I don’t know what to expect from the author.   In this particular case, the genre interested me and the plot was very intriguing.    When I received the book I immediately started reading it.   Since I was schedule to go to Calgary for a week, this book also found its way in my bag for reading when aboard the plane.   By the time I was in Calgary, I had reached the 3/4 of the book.

I really enjoyed the Legal Thriller genre of this novel.  Not only does it keeps you on the edge and want to discover more about the mystery but it also makes you wonder what the heck is happening in this story.    Mystery, danger, strong characters as well as a story based on the legal system are making this story amazing and leaving you wanting more from the author.

The mystery is linked on the 10 millions which seem to have disappeared from the surface of the Earth.  Where is the money?  Who is hiding it?   Is there anyone willing to tell the truth about it?   Follow Jared Neaton, his client and collaborators in a search for the truth behind a simple deposit slip discovered in a deposit box.    And at the end of the book, you will want to follow more of the cases of Jared Neaton.    I am so looking forward for the next novel with this interesting character.

Though the book is published at a Christian publisher, there isn’t much Christian content in it.    You will encounter a pastor and discover that a confession has been made as well as efforts to correct an error from the past but the author has not incorporated the Gospel message and/or scriptures throughout the story.   Part of me is a bit disappointed about not finding more scriptures in it and part of me enjoy the different style of this author.   Bottom line is that this book can be read by anyone you think might like the genre without feeling overly based on the Christian faith.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this title for anyone wanting to discover a new author or simply explore a new genre in literature.   This book is definitively a title to discover during your holidays this summer!
