May the 4th is a special day observed by fans of the films throughout the world.   Observance of this special day is highlighted via the internet and social media.      The first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, ON back in 2011.    Since then many take the day to highlight the movies, the world of Star Wars and promote products based on the whole universe of Star Wars.

LEGO Star Wars Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy

When I saw the cover of this book, I knew that my kids would enjoy it – not only because they are fans of Star Wars but because they also enjoy Lego.    I suspect that it will also give them some ideas on how to create fun scenes with their own Star Wars Lego in order to develop their creative side.

This book was created by Finnish photographer Vesa Lehtimäki using his son's favorite toys.  The book features painstaking recreations of classic movie moments and hilarious new takes on fan-favorite characters and themes. You will also find some Informative captions give technical details for each scene, while anecdotes from Lehtimäki offer background insights to his creative process.  It is a book about very original scenes using Lego.  

The book is divided in four sections – Tatooine, Hoth, Endor and behind the scenes.  In the last section, the reader will learn more about how the photograph has created his scenes and the process to get stunning photographs.  

LEGO Star Wars Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy is a breathtaking new look at a timeless icon that allows fans to see their favorite minifigures from the classic saga in an exciting new way.

After visualizing these images, it encourages me to develop of creative side using things like Lego figures.   I suspect it will also stir the creativity of my own kids particularly my son Dominic who is more prone to do things like Lego movie with his iPad.    I would consider this more like a coffee table book – the kid you leave in your living room for people to go through.  It could make a wonderful gift to the child who enjoys Lego Star Wars and that you know he/she would be able to do fun things like this.

 

Star Wars The Force Awakens Incredible Cross-Sections

When I looked at the book Star Wars Complete Vehicles, I knew that eventually the vehicles of Star Wars: The Force Awaken would get one like this as well.   Well it did not take long for DK to create this stunning book to present the hidden parts of the vehicles in the latest movie of the Star Wars universe.   This book offers an unparalleled detail with this newest addition to the Star Wars Incredible Cross Sections series. As per previous years, today is the unofficial Star Wars holiday – it is the day where lovers of that far, far, away galaxy celebrate their love of George Lucas’ creation.

As my final post about Star Wars books available at DK Canada, I have decided to present two wonderful item that could be a great addition for any Star Wars fan.

My Thoughts

I will admit that I didn’t know what to expect when I choose these two titles.   I picked them based on the fact that they looked different than the other books offered and that it could be fun to study as part of our homeschool.  

So these two titles were the first ones I opened up when I received the box from DK Canada.    And I got really excited because I knew that these would be greatly appreciated in our family.   

Both contains marvelous posters that will show the blueprints of various well-known Star Wars ships, locations, droids, Dark Vader.    The Ultimate Collection posters also have two sides one side showing the blueprint while the other side shows an image from the movie.   On the other hand, the Rebel Edition also has a 32-page book attached to the box.    Both blueprints cases will provide detailed drawings and information on what the blueprint is about – whether a vehicle, weapon, droid, ship, location and so on.     The details are amazing and will keep a fan busy for a while.

When I showed them to my husband he was also excited and we came up with a plan for our boys.   We are planning to surprise our daughter with new colors in her bedroom later this month.  She won’t know about it until we come back from a little outing.    So we thought it would be fun to have these blueprints up on the walls of the boys’ room to surprise them as well.     They will be excited about it and will want to check them all out immediately.    I can’t hardly wait to surprise them!   *grin*

Star Wars The Clone Wars Jedi in Training Reader 2

In Star Wars: The Clone Wars Reader Level 2: Jedi In Training Anakin's new Padawan learner is young, brash...and a girl! But more than a match for any battle droids. 

My Thoughts

The reason why I picked this title to review is because I have a little fan of Ahsoka Tano in my house.   My daughter, Jasmine, also pretend to be her whenever we watch a Star Wars The Clone Wars episode.    She is adorable and when asked what she wants to do when she is older she sometimes answers “Ahsoka Tano.”  *grin*

This DK Readers is a level 2 which means the the child is beginning to read alone.   This little book will explain hos Ahsoka Tano trains to become a Jedi even during the dangerous times of the Clone Wars.  So this is perfect for my little girl as the story is concentrated on her favourite character in the Star Wars The Clone Wars television series.

The font of the text is quite big to help the beginning reader to follow without problem.   Images from the popular television series are also illustrating the book.  Throughout the book, special boxes of information are found on various encounters that Ahsoka has during her adventures.   Finally, at the end of the book you can discover who are Ahsoka’s friends and enemies.

This book is fun to read and will definitively delight the fans of Ahsoka.

Star Wars Mysteries of the Jedi

You will learn more about Yoda and other great Jedi in the Star Wars universe, how to become a Jedi, discover who taught who, how to build your own lightsaber, learn how to fight with your lightsaber, explore the tools used by Jedi and much more.    There is even a glossary at the end of the book defining specific words for the reader.

This book is marvelously put together and contains photos and images from various sources.    If your child always wanted to learn more about the Jedi’s life and how to become one, this book will answer the questions he/she might have. 

 

Star Wars The Secret Life of Droids

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be C-3PO or what R2-D2's function is?

Well now you can find out in Star Wars: The Secret Life of Droids from DK's newest Star Wars series. Learn about the many types of droids from large and fearsome droidekas, to the smart and helpful astromech droids.

My Thoughts

Apart from the Ewoks, my other two favorite characters in Star Wars are probably R2-D2 and C-3PO.    These two robots together are very resourceful not to mentioned funny at times.    But what are droids?  How are they built?   And most of all, how do they work?

Well this marvelous book from DK Canada will answer all the questions you have about droids.  Starting with a comparison between droids and life forms, the book quickly present the types of droids and then go in more detailed about the life of droids based on their specialty.   Each subject of reading about the droids cover two pages and also contains numerous images and pictures from the movies.     The detailed information in particularly informative as well.   For specific droids, you will get manufacturer, height, gender, as well as the features of the droids while other pages will give you general information about droids.     I stumbled upon the Droids for sale page and I just could stop chuckling as I thought it was a funny way of presenting some droids. 

In this book, you will also encounter the specific droids made for battles and which battles they were used, you will see the evolution of C-3PO, the various owners of R2-D2, the friendship between the two famous droids, discover the service droids, and also get an up-close-and-personal view on technical aspects of droids.

My thoughts

You wanted to learn EVERYTHING for Star Wars but didn’t know which book you should get?  Well look no more.  The Star Wars Ultimate Visual Guide will provide all the knowledge you are seeking to get your family and friends in awe.  

I, myself, will more than likely read this book from cover to cover because there is so much information hidden in it.   

The images and photos are spectacular to the point that I am not looking forward to read the comic collection we got a few months ago.    A complete star Wars comic collection that we were able to get for a fraction of the price.    Sweet!   I recognize images from the movies and the television series but I also see new images of events that happened in the books and the comics.   

The book is simply breathtaking and contains so much information that any Star Wars fan will love it.

Isn’t the presentation absolutely fabulous?    I suspect that a fan of Star Wars won’t be able to put the book down…   Going through this book, I can’t help myself but to recall a video that went wildfire many years ago.  The video titled “George Lucas in Love” hypothesized on how Lucas came up with the idea of Star Wars.  I think you can find the video somewhere on the internet but I will leave it to you to google it and find it.   It’s worth watching though.    Just saying.

We love the Star Wars movies.   I remember going to the remake of them when my husband and I were dating back in the late 90s.    And since having kids, not only have we gotten a comic collection but you will find books, LEGO, toys and more.   Mind you we are not die-hard fans.   We don’t have everything concerning Star Wars like soaps and so on.  But you could find a few t-shirts as well as a couple of games based on the movies.   The Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide is a great book to have in our personal library for reference and for learning more about everything concerning Star Wars.

In celebration of the May the 4th Be With You! event, you need to know that for every DK Star Wars book sold at Chapters / Indigo stores on May 4-6, we will be making a donation to the Indigo For the Love of Reading Foundation.

Here’s some information about the program.

We passionately believe that when a child has a book put in their hands it changes their life forever. With the support of Indigo customers and employees the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation puts books into the hands of Canadian children. To do date Love of Reading has committed over $12 million to more than 650 high-needs elementary schools across the country so children can develop a love of reading, unleash their dreams and fulfil their potential. Finally, for the entire month of May DK Canada is having a photo contest where people are invited to send photos of themselves or loved ones reading DK Star Wars books. For each picture received, DK Canada will again make a donation to the Love of Reading Foundation. Information about the contest will be posted under “PHOTO CONTEST” at cn.dk.com/starwars. DK Canada will pick an Office Favourite photo and that person will win a DK Star Wars library worth $200 and we will donate a complete set of DK Star Wars Readers to the library of school of their choice.

My Thoughts

My boys are crazy about Star Wars.   They could play with their LEGO figurines for hours at hand.   They could read Star Wars books whenever they want.   My son, Dominic, keeps carrying the LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia no matter where we go.   As soon as we are in the truck, you can bet that he is reading through the book.   This child of mine will know every about each characters in the legendary movies.

This book has four chapters – one on the movie saga, one on the Clone Wars, on covering the special sets and finally the last chapter presenting everything beyond the Brick.   There is definitively lots of information about the LEGO Star Wars products in this book.   As the title suggest it, it is primarily a visual dictionary which means that a child with limited reading capabilities can easily look at the numerous images and pictures in this book.    However, if your child reads by himself (or herself because some girls do love Star Wars too!) there is also fun facts about the characters, ships and so on.

Inside the book, you will be able to;

• See a complete illustrated timeline of every LEGO Star Wars set ever produced, including the latest Clone Wars sets.
• Discover all the minifigures, from Anakin to Yoka and how the LEGO Star Wars sets are designed and created. (That should grab the interest of my kids!)
• Explore every detail of the Millennium Falcon, Imperial Star Destroyer, and Death Star.

And to top it off, this book comes with an exclusive minifigure representing Luke Skywalker after he receive the medal,

Personally I really like looking at the images in the fourth chapter of the book.  There is also an interview with Jens Kronvold Frederiksen who is the Design manager of the LEGO Star Wars team in Billund, Denmark.    (I know some kids who will read this with great attention!).  You can also see some other merchandising behind the movies…   I’m happy to say that we personally own one of the stuffed Ewoks from Walt Disney World that we bought back in 1998 during our honeymoon.   I love the Ewoks and my husband bought it while we were at MGM Studios.
