The Drop Box documentary

20140719-L1028705The Drop Box is a documentary about the work of Pastor Lee Jong-Rak and his heroic efforts to embrace and protect his community’s most vulnerable childre.    Hundreds of unwanted babies are abandoned on the streets of Seoul, South Korea, every year, forgotten by the surrounding culture.   By installing a drop box outside his home, Pastor Lee provides a safe haven to babies who would otherwise be abandonned on the streets to die.

The documentary is a heart-wrenching exploration of the physical and emotional toll associated with providing refuge to save those deemed unwanted by society.  The documentary is mostly subtitled in English as most of the talk is done in South Korean.  But even with the fact that you need to translate in your mind while reading, you can’t miss the story and how it all started.

The documentary covers many aspects of the ministry like who is the pastor behind it and what is his story, the ministry that he offers, the kids and the volunteers, the routine that everyone go through on a daily basis and much more.   20140719-L1028884

You will walk on the street of Seoul and see where the babies were abandoned on the streets before Pastor Lee decided to install a drop box.   Most of the time the babies left in the drop box do not have any information about the mother or the day of birth.    In South Korea, it is extremely difficult for a young woman to be pregnant out of wedlock.   Highschool girls who are discovered loose their schooling opportunities.  Consequently they often abandoned their babies.    Even the adoption process is not an option since you have to give your citizenship number and they can easily find you.   Besides going through the regular adoption process requires to go through seven administrative institutional steps just to deal with the abandoned child. Before the Drop Box was installed, many single girls would be suicidal because of what would happen to them.   In 2013 alone, more than 204 babies were abandoned in Seoul.   Orphans are not well viewed in South Korea.

Pastor Lee and his wife have raised a son who is a special need child.   Now at the age of 26 years old, he still spend his days laying down.   Their child has taught them Doing so prepared them to the task that the Drop Box requires of them.    The youngest baby that came through the Drop Box was about 1 to 2 hours old.   Still they took the child and care for her.    So far, over 594 babies have came through the Drop Box as of 11/14.    Pastor Lee and his wife have adopted some of them – some having special needs.   One of these kids is a gentle heart 10 years old boy who doesn’t have all his fingers and toes but wishes to take over the ministry of his dad – Pastor Lee – when he is older.    He even spend quite some time with his older brother who requires help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.    Seeing him helping with these kids touched me heart and made me hope that my kids will also want to help others when they are older.

Throughout the documentary you will also have a visualized cartoonish story telling the story of what is being told as well as testimonies of the work done through the ministry.  You will also learn about the issues that they have caring for the kids as well as the health problems that Pastor Lee has.

As I watched this with my oldest son, it was hard to hold my tears.   Part of me wanted to fly to South Korean and adopt one or two of these kids.  They are indeed precious in God’s sight.   I know how a disabled child can be a blessing for a family because I have a special nephew who without even realizing it teach us to love anyone without restraint.     It breaks my heart to hear about how these kids are being abandoned and I rejoice to see the many volunteers coming to help Pastor Lee and his wife to care for these children.

20140719-L102895420140719-L1028934

The documentary is a heart-wrenching exploration of the physical and emotional toll associated with providing refuge to save those deemed unwanted by society.   It is also a story of hope and a celebration of the reality that every human life is sacred, has a purpose and is worthy of love.

This documentary was made by Brian Ivie.  He learned about Pastor Lee’s baby box and orphanage in the Los Angeles Times and knew it was a story worth sharing.   However, he didn’t expect that through the journey of making this documentary, he would co-found Kindred Image to support Pastor Lee and come to know Christ.

20140719-L1028911

On March 4th and 5th, the documentary will be played in theaters throughout the country.   In Ottawa, you will be able to go to Landmark Cinemas 24 in Kanata, Cineplex Odeon in South Keys and Silvercity in Gloucester.  To find if the documentary will be showing in your city, please go to the DropBox website.  I really think that everyone should take some time to go see this touching documentary and discover how God cares for these little ones.   But please be aware that you should bring some tissues with you because this documentary will touch your heart.

Escape to the Hiding Place – Imagination Station 9

About the book

Patrick and Beth arrive in World War II Holland in the farm country. They must smuggle a baby (by bicycle) into the capable hands of Corrie ten Boom at her home in Haarlem. Along the way they hide from Nazi soliders, meet a Russian surgeon forced into service by the Germans, and encourage two Jewish children who haven’t been outside in over three years. The children learn to appreciate the bravery and sacrifice of everyday people who helped the Jews.

My Thoughts

From all the books of the Imagination Station that I have read so far, this one is my favourite.   Maybe it’s because I really like the story of Corrie Ten Boom but I think it is fabulous that real events from the past is mixed up with fiction characters.

Once again the cousins, Patrick and Beth, are teleported in history.  They arrive in the midst of the second world war and are surrounded by Germans.   How can they protect themselves so that they are not caught?  What can they do to help the people that they encounter?   They will learn that sometimes it takes courage to do something that could change the life of someone.    They will discover bravery and sacrifice were necessary to help neighbours and friends.

And like the other books in the series, you will also have a secret word puzzle that will allow you to receive a free episode of Focus on the Family Adventures in Odyssey.   My kids and I love listening to these while we drive to the swimming lessons or other activities.   The episode are always fun to listen and a new lesson is attached to each one of them.

The books are great for grade 2 or 3 kids but even older kids and parents would appreciate them.  They are  a great addition for any personal library.  If you are wondering which books you could purchase for your kids this Christmas, I would like to suggest the whole series of The Imagination Station.

Escape to the Hiding Place is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com

It is also available on the Kindle.

Imagination Station–Revenge of the Red Knight

About the book

In this Imagination Station adventure, Patrick and Beth find themselves as guests in a beautiful castle in 15th-century England. Through a series of events, the steward of Lord Darkthorn’s castle finds the cousins with three artifacts collected in their previous adventures: the stone, the cup, and the golden tablet. They are accused of being thieves and locked in jail. Beth escapes and discovers the identity of the real thief, leading to a jousting contest with a surprising outcome. Set during the War of the Roses in England, Revenge of the Red Knight will teach readers about the Crusades, the integrity of knights and the vows they took, and why men would choose to risk their lives to fight for Christianity.

Who is Marianne Hering?

Marianne Hering is a prolific writer, having written hundreds of articles and a number of books for children and parents. For nine years she worked for several magazines in Focus on the Family's periodicals department and became the editor of Clubhouse, a Focus on the Family children's magazine with a circulation of over 100,000.

Marianne's book titles include two series for girls (Lights, Camera, Action; and White House Adventures) and a recent biography of William Bradford. Her most recent title is a compilation of activities from Clubhouse magazine, the Focus on the Family Clubhouse Family Activity Book.

As a mother of three children, Marianne is interested in parenting and education issues, including home schooling and tutoring reading. She graduated from Biola University (La Mirada, California) with a degree in psychology and has continued her education with courses in writing and editing. She and her husband, Doug, live in Colorado with their nine-year-old daughter, Danielle, and two-year-old twin sons, Justin and Kendrick.

Our Thoughts

When the cousins were in China they were not sent back to Odyssey.   What happened?   Are they lost forever?

Turns out that they are in 15th century England and they will live adventures during the times of the Knights and joust.   In the mix of this adventure, they will encounter thieves and will have to defend their honor.   This new book is set during the War of the Roses in England.   What a wonderful way to experience and live history with beloved characters.    The Imagination Station series will help you discover history through a different angle.  My oldest son is enjoying reading these book and can’t seem to get enough.

Beautiful drawings are found throughout the book and illustrate the action in it.   The ones that I particularly like is when the cousins are holding a shield and facing a running horse and its knight going toward them.  This illustration needed to be big enough to shop the action so it takes two pages.

In the end, the cousins are back in Odyssey and you can sense that more adventures with The Imagination Station will happen.   The reader also has a little puzzle to solve if he/she wants to get a free episode of Adventures in Odyssey online.

The Imagination Station website has contain family activities, a parent’s page as well as more information on Vikings and Roman.   I assume that more fun pages will be added eventually for books 3 and 4.

I highly recommend The Imagination Station series for everyone.   Not only it is an entertaining read but it will introduce your kids to history in a different way.   Bring on the imagination and have fun with Adventures in Odyssey and The Imagination Station!

Revenge of the Red Knight is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.

About the book

The place? China in 1271. The quest? The golden tablet of Kublai Khan. The problem? Just about everything!
The Imagination Station adventures continue as cousins Patrick and Beth are kidnapped by Mongol warriors. Only the friendship of fellow traveler Marco Polo saves them from harm. They are brought to the Mongol palace, where the Kublai Khan dislikes both their gifts and their message about Christianity. The tension grows when the Mongol magicians challenge the cousins to a spiritual power showdown. As war breaks out, Beth and Patrick are locked in a secret room to prevent their escape.
How do the cousins get the golden tablet they need to save Mr. Whittaker’s friend Albert? How do they escape the city and find the Imagination Station? Enter the perilous palace and find out!

Our Thoughts

In book three of the series, the cousins, Patrick and Beth are sent to China in the year 1271.   They have to find and bring back a golden tablet of Kublai Khan.   They first encounter Mongol warriors but soon realize that they are among friends with Marco Polo, his father and uncle.     Once again adventure awaits the cousins and they will be in the middle of a war without knowing how to get out of this place.   Fortunately, two people will come to their rescue.   One being a princess while the other is a knight from another time.

The book starts once again with a prologue which will summarize the previous books.   Each time you learn a little bit more about the situation.   Once again the drawings that accompanied the story are fabulous.   They illustrate precisely what is happening during the story and permit you to visualize the environment where the cousins are.

That part that I particularly enjoyed was when Beth demonstrated that the shamans were false prophets and were misleading the Khan.    She is very ingenious and can think rapidly.    She is a strong character in the story and demonstrate that girls are good at science too!   It is also sad that the Khan is a good representation of how most people react to God.   The story is definitively a good way to introduce the kids to the fact that not everyone will be open to receive Christ when they share about Him.

Peril in the Palace is a wonderful book to see life during the Mongols era.   It is another good book to have in hand when you are studying history.

Peril in the Palace is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.

Imagination Station–Attack at the Arena

The Imagination Station Book 2 – Attack at the Arena

About the book

Patrick and Beth learn that Mr. Whittaker’s fancy ring can be seen inside the Imagination Station but not outside of the machine. A mysterious letter leads the cousins to fifth-century Rome in search of a special cup that belongs to a monk. If found, the cup could keep the mysterious Albert out of prison.

At the Roman Colosseum, Emperor Honorius is hosting a gladiator battle in celebration of a war victory. Beth attends the event as the emperor’s slave; Patrick attends as a monk’s apprentice but is taken prisoner and sent to fight in the arena. During their adventure, the cousins meet Telemachus (a true historical figure), a monk who believes that fighting is wrong. Telemachus is willing to risk everything—even his life—to stop the killing. When the cousins return with the cup, they find that a third letter has been sent with more information about Albert’s fate.

My Thoughts

I am a fast reader – faster than my kids.   So the next few books from the Imagination Station, I will review myself.

Attack at the Arena will bring you to the Roman time.    However, you don’t have to have read the previous book before reading this one.   A nice prologue at the beginning of the book will explain what is going on and what adventures the cousins have lived before.

The second trip of Patrick and Beth will bring them to Rome.  They will encounter real historical figures and experience the last Roman games.  Once again they will be separate but no worries they will found each other again.   Impersonating a slave and a  monk, they will be part of the event when Telemachus will convince the Emperor Honorius to stop the madness linked to the games.

This book will be a wonderful addition to “live” history while studying the Roman times.    It describes and provide information about the games as well as how Romans lived.    Knowing that this series is attached to the popular radio show Adventures in Odyssey, I have no hesitation whatsoever to let my kids read them.

At the end of each book, the child can decipher a puzzle and get a secret word which he/she can enter at TheImaginationStation.com to get a prize.   So far the first two prizes are some AIO episodes which I find is totally fantastic as my kids absolutely LOVE these.

I highly recommend The Imagination Station series for any family who have kids.

About the book

While visiting Mr. Whittaker at Whit's Soda Shoppe, Beth and Patrick find a mysterious letter in the Imagination Station requesting a Viking sunstone. The letter is old and says that someone named Albert will be imprisoned if the sunstone isn't found. Mr. Whittaker sends cousins Patrick and Beth to Greenland circa 1000. On their quest for the sunstone, the cousins meet Vikings Erik the Red and Leif Eriksson--and find the sunstone as they join Leif on his first voyage to North America. But the adventure is just beginning, for when they return to Mr. Whittaker's workshop with the sunstone, there is another note waiting for them, requesting a silver goblet.
Join Patrick and Beth as they continue their travel to various lands and time in the Imagination Station book series.

Our Thoughts

My kids just don’t have enough of the Adventures in Odyssey program.   Every time we are in our truck driving somewhere they request it.   When we went to the swimming lessons, it was our weekly listening time with AIO.   Imagine my delight when I realized that AIO now have books linked to The Imagination Station.   I just knew the kids would enjoy them!

As a parent, I always take the habit of reading a book before my kids go through it.  But in this instance, I didn’t.   I knew that there was quality when it comes to AIO and Focus on the Family.   But I did grab the book one night, read about half of it before going to bed and read the rest early in the morning the next day.   I enjoyed the story even though it is clearly written for children ages 7 and up.    It does provide interesting information about the Vikings throughout the adventure.    Knowing that the story is Christian based is also giving peace of mind.    One thing that I particularly liked in this story is that the two main characters are a girl and a boy.  Consequently the story can be interesting for boys and girls.    Both character has an important role in the success of their mission.

Alexandre, my oldest, had a book review activity in his writing lesson to do this week.    And he picked the book Voyage with the Vikings for it.   So I have decided to include his book report in this review.

Voyage with the Vikings by Marianne Hering

In the story Voyage with the Vikings, the author is trying to tell you that kindness is better than evil.   The story starts out when Beth brings her cousin Patrick to Whit’s End to show him the imagination station and meet Mr. Whittaker.  In the middle of the story, Beth and Patrick are transported to the year 1000 to find a Sunstone before the full moon.  By the end of the story, the cousins had found the Sunstone and are brought back to the 21st century.  It was interesting to read more about the Vikings.

The books is about two cousins that are sent back in time during the Vikings period.   They need to find a Sunstone to save another character.  The author has included a mystery which helps the transition of the story.  The costume closet is a great addition to the story because it prepares the main characters for the adventure awaiting them.

Once Beth and Patrick arrives in Greenland, they encounter wild animals immediately.  Soon they will come face to face with Erik the Red and Leif Ericksson.  They are brought to the village and they participate to a feast where the Vikings are also playing chess.   Their search for the Sunstone continues.  When they found it, they discover it is too big  to be brought back.   I enjoyed learning about how the Vikings used the Sunstone throughout the year.

The cousins are able to go back in the century when they find a smaller sunstone.  However, before leaving, Patrick showed kindness to his enemy.   That reminded me of an Aesop’s Fables my younger brother was reading this morning titled “The North Wind and the Sun”.   the moral of that story is that kindness is better than force.

I liked reading Voyage with the Vikings and learned about the life of the Vikings.   I also thought it was interesting to know how they identified the seasons.   After reading this book, I want to read all the books in The Imagination Station series.

Even my 7 years old son who is becoming more comfortable with reading has requested to read the books.   Knowing that the book are based on a radio program we approved, it is easy to permit the kids to read them.    I do not hesitate to get AIO products for my kids because I know that in the end, they will learn important lessons through them.

Voyage with the Vikings is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.
