Transformers Age of Extinction toys

image

In case you haven’t realized yet – this June more specifically June 27th, 2014 the theatres will be invaded by familiar robots.    The movie takes place four years after the invasion of Chicago.  As per previous installments of the Transformers movies, Hasbro is offering numerous toys based on the new film.

6B9916EB50569047F5B92C1EBEAE33DBOne of the products offered in the toy section of your favourite store is the Transformers Age of Extinction Flip and Change Optimus Prime figure.    Your Optimus Prime figure has robot and truck modes like always, and he's armed with a sword in robot mode. However, whichever mode he's in, he converts to the other mode in a flash when you smash him down.  It’s very simple – you smash it and it will change in the ultimate Transformers combat.

I think it is a great way to transform the toy from truck to robot and vice versa.

The other product I have received is the Deluxe Class High Octane Bumblebee figure.image

To avoid detection, BUMBLEBEE takes on a different form, disguising himself as a super-charged muscle car.  You child will be able to convert, arm and attack with all the Transformers action that it can handle This High Octane Bumblebee figure is a high-powered fighter whether he's in robot mode or Camaro mode. With his blaster in his hand, he'll be a match for any enemy in robot mode. And when he converts to super-charged classic Camaro mode, no enemy can hope to escape him! Keep converting him back and forth so he can handle whatever his foes dish out.

K’nex Building World Kids Love

imageNot too long ago, I received a box from K'Nex with products inside. I was sort of surprised because I didn't expect anything from them. But since they have sent me some items to review, I will present the to my readers.

The first item I received was a Plants vs. Zombies kit. Now I know there is an app on iTunes called Plants vs. Zombies and I somewhat deducted that this kit and the individual packs that I will present later were linked to this app. Apparently, it is related to the Wild West game section of Plants vs. Zombies 2.

imageThe Wild West Skirmish set contains over 220 pieces and will allow your child to defeat zombies and save his or her brain.... In the Wild West. Seriously though the set reminds me of the shooting range at a fair. You will find two Cowboy Zombie figures and one Prospector Zombie figure along with a Peashooter figure inside the box. All the child has to do is to use the K'Nex parts in order to build a Wild West area. Using the Peashooter's shooting action, you have to defeat the Zombies. You will find seven peas as well as a build able mama stand inside the box. All you have to do is to slide the Peashooter back and forth along the track and shoot the zombies.

image image

This specific pack is geared for children ages 5 and up.

Also included in my package I found three packs of the Plants vs. Zombies Series 1. These special individual packs will allow your child to collect his favorite characters from Plants vs. Sombies. Each bag contains one mystery figure. Series 1 includes the following characters - Basic Zombie, Mummy Zombie, Future Conehead Zombie, Cowboy Zombie, Peashooter, Bloomerang, Bonk Choy and Sunflower.

image

Finally, the last item in my package was the Cosmic Quest Building Set. This specific set is geared for children ages 7 and up. It will allow the child to take an adventure into space and build 5 models - one at a time. The set allows you to build a Mars Rover, a Hover Craft, an Alien, a Space Suit, or a Moon Bike.

image

Though I must admit that I am not too fond of Zombies I think it is original to have based a popular construction toy on an app.    Personally, of all the three items I have received, I prefer the Cosmic Quest building set because it will also allow more creativity in the end.   Without hesitation, your child might decide to build something totally out of the ordinary that is still in the theme of outer space.

These three products are available at your favourite toy store, even on amazon.ca and amazon.com.

NIV Integrated Study Bible

_225_350_Book.948.coverNIV Integrated Study Bible (NIVISB) – A New Chronological Approach for Exploring Scripture
by John R. Kohlenberger
published at Zondervan

About the bible

More than just a chronological Bible—not only are passages of Scripture arranged in their sequential order, but so also are individual events, and includes multiple interpretations for deeper revelations.

The NIV Integrated Study Bible shows the Bible unfolding in a new way as the landmark events are set in parallel. It’s more than just a chronological Bible—not only are passages of Scripture arranged in their sequential order, but so also are individual events. And multiple interpretations allow for deeper revelations. For instance, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John’s telling of Jesus feeding the 5,000—presented in four columns right next to each other—take on a new life. David’s story about hiding from Saul in the wilderness is paired with the relevant psalms. In this new, hardcover edition, the NIV Integrated Study Bible will prove to be a lasting and invaluable resource for your customers.

Features include:

  • The entire text of the NIV translation with the order of events arranged chronologically
  • General and sectional (e.g., Pentateuch, History, Prophets, Gospels) introductions on chronology and dating, including comparative charts of major systems and schemes
  • Brief commentary in the form of transitions to help navigate the chronology

My Thoughts

I was curious about this Bible because I thought it was an interesting way of presenting the Scriptures.   When I received it I proceeded to explore it and read the introduction.  I have discovered that this bible is unique for reading and for studying the scriptures.   The NIVISB presents the Bible in a chronological order for reading with the books of poetry and prophecy and the New Testament letters integrated into the history in which they were written.   It also presents a parallel passages for study in a side-by-side format.

imageimage

The NIVISB is presented in seven major historical sections:

  1. Creation Through the Patriarchs  (Genesis and Job)
  2. Exodus to Conquest (Exodus to Deuteronomy, Psalm 90)
  3. Conquest through United Kingdom (Josiah to 1 Kings 11, 1 Chronicles 10 to 2 Chronicles 9, 129 Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon)
  4. Divided Kingdom and Exile (1 Kings 12 to 2 Kings 25, 2 Chronicles 10-36, Isaiah to Daniel 9, Hosea, Amos to Zephaniah, Psalm 102, Psalm 137)
  5. Return to the Land (1 Chronicle 1-9, Ezra to Esther, Daniel 10-12, Haggai, Zechariah, Joel, Malachi, 18 Psalms)
  6. The Life of Jesus (Matthew to John)
  7. The Early Church (Acts to Revelation)

A Chronological timeline is included at the bottom of each page of this Bible so that you can easily visualize where in history the Scriptures refers.  A triangular pointer will marks the approximate date of the event each page is presenting.  Also, throughout the NIVISB you will find special charts that are strategically inserted – Patriarchs, Exodus and Conquest/United Kingdom, Divided Kingdom/Exile/Restoration/Between the Testaments, Rulers of the Divided Kingdom of Israel and Judah, Christ’s Early Life/Christ’s Ministry, and The Early Church.   Some of these charts also contains World history information which makes it interesting to study as you learn when in history the events of the Bible were lived.  Having parallel passages is also interesting while you study a certain passage of the Bible.   You will find chronological parallels, genealogies as well as conceptual parallels in the NIVISB

I find this bible very interesting and worth discovering when you want to read the Word in a different way and explore the scriptures in a chronological approach.    Even my thirteen years old son is liking the idea behind this Bible.    While reading this special edition of God’s Word, you will see the Bible unfold in a new way as you explore the integrated approach.   These pages are presented in various ways – 2 columns, 3 columns or 4 columns.  For example, when David is in the cave in 1 Samuel 22:3-4 and Psalm 142 you will read both scriptures in a 2-column presentation while when you read about the feeding of the 5000 in Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:1-13 you will be able to explore these scriptures in a 4-column presentation.

The NIVISB has been put together in order to encourage you to read and study the Word of God.   However, further resources are needed if you want to have notes, commentary, historical, cultural, and practical insights.  Zondervan has numerous titles that could help you in deepening your study of God’s Word with the NIV Study Bible, the Expositor’s Bible Commentary, the NIV Application Commentary, the Zondervan Encyclopedia of the Bible and Zondervan Illustrated Bible Dictionary.  Needless to say the NIVISB is a good tool to have in your personal library in order to get a good understanding of where in history the events of the Bible occurred.

No everyone will like the way it is presented.   I personally find that this Bible opens up a new way of reading the Scripture and will be worth discovering.  It can be a wonderful gift for a graduate or for a baptism.   The NIVISB is also a great addition in an homeschool personal library as you can visualize the scriptures historically.  Experience the interconnectedness of the Scriptures from Genesis through Revelation with the NIV Integrated Study Bible!

The NIV Integrated Study Bible is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

Great Books To Study Canadian History

imageGreat Books To Study Canadian History – a guide to studying Canadian History Through Historical Fiction
Written by Bonnie Landry
Published at Excellent Resources

About the book

A perfect compliment to the Canada Series for more practice.

Great Books to Study Canadian History is a guide to studying Canadian History through historical fiction. The purpose of this book is to fill the gap that exists in not only cataloging the sources for studying Canadian history, but to also whet the appetite for studying history as a springboard to other family studies. The book includes general Canadian History books, chronology of historical literature, timelines, poetry and links to other resources

My Thoughts

I discovered this book before our homeschool conference back in April.   I was curious about it and made a mental note to check it out while at the conference.   I liked what I saw but our budget was already allocated this year for other resources that were needed including some that I purchased at the Excellent Resources table.   A few weeks after the conference, I was given a beautiful book on Canadian history from a friend and I got reminded of the Great Books To Study Canadian History which would nicely complement the reading of the book I had received.

Well, today I am presenting the new book Great Books to Study Canadian History which has just been released at Excellent Resources this year.   In this book, you will find literature suggested to complement your study of Canada and how to use them in your Canadian history studies.   It didn’t take me long to start reading and discovering this little gem.   Now, before I review this book, let me specify that it doesn’t contain books on Canadian history curriculum.   Instead, it is packed with titles of literature based on the historical eras of Canada.  Before I share my thoughts on the book, let’s check out the table of contents together:

  • Chapter One: Studying Canadian History Through Literature
  • Chapter Two: How to Read a Book so It Becomes the Curriculum
  • Chapter Three: General Books About Canadian History
  • Chapter Four: A Chronological List of Historical Literature
  • Chapter Five:  Timelines
  • Chapter Six:  Poetry and Artists
  • Chapter Seven: General Suggestions for Canadian Content in Other Areas
  • Chapter Eight: Resources – This chapter gives a list of suppliers and websites where you can find the suggested books included in this book.

I find the book very informative as the author will guide you on how to study Canadian history using literature and guide you in creating a timeline for your studies.   The list of books suggested to read are extensive to say the least.  Every titles mentioned in this product is listed by chronological events through Canadian history.   I quickly saw titles I was familiar with but also realized that other titles could be added to it.   For example,  I couldn’t find the books from Eric Walters that are linked to the history in Canada or the two Canadian based series published from Scholastic.

The author also mentions the importance of complementing the reading of an historical novel with some research on the subject in an encyclopedia if the child wants to learn more about it.   I totally support this as I do believe on the importance of learning more on a specific subject.  However, she strongly encourage the use of World Book and after checking out the website, I was surprised to discover the price tag attached to it.   As homeschooler, I know the importance of budgeting and being wise with the money we have.  Having an husband who is a contractor makes this an higher importance for us.   Spending that much when you can access Wikipedia for free on the internet doesn’t make sense for me.   She did mentioned the use of online encyclopedia but quickly highlighted the fact that snuggling together around a computer is not an easy thing to do.  However, with the tablets being more and more popular in homeschool families I think it is feasible.   Another option would be to hook-up a computer to your television set and surf the internet on the big screen television.  That’s how we are set up in our living room and the kids can easily do research on the big screen where I can supervise rapidly what they are doing.    Knowing that Wikipedia is recognized as one of the best online encyclopedia on the internet, I choose to use this free resources instead of spending so much on a paper copy of an encyclopedia.

One other thing that the author has done in this product is to highlight the books that were specifically for grade 7 and up.   If you see a * next to a title of the book, it indicates that it is a suggestion for a core study for upper levels of middle and high school.  She also specify the kind of book listed by indicating if it is a fiction (F) or non fiction (NF).  Book keys will also help you to determine is the book is suitable for your kids – Level (1) for early readers, Level (2) for fluent readers, and Level (3) for advanced readers or adults.  This resource is well documented and will guide you in selecting the books that would be perfect for your family.   Finally, if you desire to have a look at the content of this book before deciding to purchase it, a preview is available on the Excellent Resources website.

Do I think this book is a great tool to own?   Absolutely.   It will guide you in incorporating fabulous books to read while studying Canada.  I would also use a curriculum about Canada alongside with these historical fictions.  This resource is definitively a great reference to have and use in your homeschool.    It will help you identify the historical novels you could read with your kids – no matter the ages they are.  In order to complete it, I would also research other suggestions offered by Canadian homeschoolers on various blogs and Pinterest boards as well.

Great Books to Study Canadian History is available for purchase directly from Excellent Resources in a Coil-Bound Book for the price of 15$ (Cdn).  Click on the Add to Cart in order to purchase it.

Philippians in 28 Weeks

 Philippians in 28 Weeks
Written by Stacy Farrell
Published at Home School Adventure Co.

About the product

The Bible is banned in many countries.  Countless believers have sacrificed their freedom – and many, their lives – to spread the message of God’s love and salvation contained within its pages.  Are we exercising our freedom responsibly?

Memorize the entire book of Philippians in 28 weeks!

My Thoughts

Since my kids have started attending Awana, I find it is easier for them to memorize scriptures and etched God’s Word upon their heart.   There is time that I wish I had the motivation to do a bit more memorization myself.   I knew that Philippians in 28 weeks was available but I haven’t had the courage to get it.  However, in May I approached the author and asked if it could be possible to review it.  She agreed and provided me with a pdf copy to download.

The goal is to learn the whole book of Philippians in 28 weeks.    I was highly motivated and read the instructions before starting.  The idea is quite simple if you think about it.   The first thing you need to do is read the book regularly.  And when I say regularly, I mean daily…. every single day of the 28 weeks.   I will be honest with you – I don’t do this daily so I know that deep down it will take me more than 28 weeks to memorize.  And I realize that daily immersion of the scripture makes it easier to remember – daily immersion of the same scriptures is the first essential step in memorization.

The second step is to record.  Stacy Farrell has graciously provided special pages to copy the section on which you are putting your emphasis during the week.   This copywork is also perfect to allow your kids to practice penmanship at the same time while studying the book of Philippians.  You also have the opportunity to journal and reflect on the scriptures you are learning that week.

Step three consist in repeating the verses on a daily basis by using the cards provided.  You can carry them on you and read them over and over – memorizing slowly and surely the words in your mind and heart.  At the end of each week, you can recite aloud to someone else the cards you have completed.   In a way this step is allowing you to review the verses you have learned with someone.  This also allow you to be accountable on your challenge in learning the verses.   Come to think of it, I believe this is the step that I am missing – accountability in order to keep up with my challenge.

Finally, before starting a new week, you have to recite the memorized verses in order to test your retention.   The author has provided useful recitation charts at the end of each chapter in order to help you with this step.

Also included in the curriculum, you will find a log that will help you to be more accountable and keep you on track.   I will admit that I completely forgot to fill this log when I started the curriculum.   To be completely honest with my reader, I think I had too much on my shoulders when I started it.   Each morning I read my French Bible since the 1st of January.   I somewhat felt overwhelmed in doing this, my devotions as well as reading through Philippians daily.   It was just too much.  And after a few days, the reading part of Philippians was dropped.   This was not a good idea – trust me.   In order to succeed in memorizing the verses in the book of Philippians, you will have to be dedicated in reading daily through the book – no matter what is going on in your life and no matter if it has already been 6 times you read it.  Because when you think of it at the end of 28 weeks, you should have read the book of Philippians one hundred and ninety-six times.  No wonder that memorizing would be easy to do when you read it so often!   And if you make a quick math calculation, this curriculum will take roughly about seven months to complete which is perfect for the new school year coming our way in a few months!

So in order to be able to pursue this challenge, I now realize that I need to make a decision to drop all other Bible reading I am doing and find someone who will encourage me and held me accountable in doing this challenge.   Another option would be to delay the learning of this book of the Bible but when you sense that the Spirit is telling you to deepen your memorization skills in order to have more scriptures in your heart – well….  delaying is not an option I think.    At the same time, I sense that my head is fighting me on this because  I don’t want to think of myself as a quitter when I stopped reading my three chapters a day in my French bible.  It’s ridiculous I know…. and ultimately I need to make the decision and not look back.    And since learning comes with experience, I have decided to tackle this challenge the way it is suppose to be done. The only reason why I am stalling on the memorization part is that I wasn’t dedicated enough in the process of learning.

I love the way the author has presented and decorticated the scriptures in order to memorize them better.  It is an ingenious way of learning more of God’s Word and it guides you through an easy process of memorization – reading, writing, studying, saying, and repeating.     This product would make a wonderful biblical curriculum for your middle school or high school student in the fall.   I strongly recommend the Philippians in 28 weeks for anyone (students, young adults, older adults) who wants to deepen their relationship with God.  It is a great product that will allow you to memorize a special book of the Bible where you will be encourage to find joy, be humble, and always be thankful.  By doing so with your kids you can hide God’s word in your heart and be a testimony to Him at the same time.

If you want to discover how it is done, you can download the first chapter of the product on the website.  http://www.homeschooladventure.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Philippians_in_28_Weeks_sample_chapter1.pdf

You can order Philippians in 28 weeks in print edition (28.95$) or ebook edition (14.95$).  Two versions are available – ESV or KJV.   I personally would like to see the NIV or NLT version as well.  You can also have the option of only downloading the cards (ESV version) if you prefers this.  The price tag for the cards is 9.95$.    All these can be ordered direction from Home School Adventure Co. at  http://www.homeschooladventure.com/products/philippians-in-28-weeks/.

IMG_1288My Thoughts

We hosted Jane Bull the doll from June 3rd to June 9th, 2014.  She arrived safely via FedEx and immediately won the heart of my sweet daughter, Jasmine.

The week was packed with final planning for a Comic Book Fundraising Sale for CHEO we were doing on Saturday.  But we brought Jane to swimming and told her that it was voting time in Ontario.

IMG_1290IMG_2603IMG_2604

On Saturday morning, we still didn’t know what to expect for the fundraising sale we were having.

IMG_2605

Jane helped as much as she could early in the morning with helping Jasmine coloring an easel to announce the sale and serving lemonade.   She even got a huge hug from the CHEO Bear.

IMG_2612IMG_2611IMG_2610

But all good thing come to an end and Jane has to travel to another destination this week.   So she sat with me and together we wrote the blog post about her new book.

IMG_1298

I will be honest with you.   I have a nice list of dolls to make for Jasmine right now.   She looked dutifully in this book and told me which ones she really liked.  She even told me that I needed to do a camera as well for the dolls just like the one in the book.  So far, she requested the Lottie doll, the ballerina with the fairy wings, Shelly the Mermaid, and the double doll Cinders/Cinderella.  When she looked at the knitted dolls, I stopped her because you see I don’t know how to knit and honestly I don’t have the time or the patience to learn.  I would love to be able to do that but I must be honest with myself.  It’s just not a good time to start that kind of learning.

I like the fact that there is a wide variety of ideas included in this book.  It is packed with simple steps to sew and/or knit the cutest dolls I have ever seen.   Templates are also incorporated through the pages of this book.  The projects are explained in easy terms with clear step-by-step instructions.  Fabulous photos can be found at the instructions levels or to show the final product. You will find a wide variety of dolls in this book from ballerina to superhero as well as topsy-turvy dolls or tiny pocket dolls.   Accessories instructions like handbags hats, shoes camera and more are also explained.

I also find that you can adapt some of the smaller crafts for something else.  For example the Handy dolls which were originally created to be covers for scissors or key rings could also make an original book marker as well.   In the last section of the book, Jane Bull is showing you the step-by-step instructions on how to sew, knit or stitch.  I know I will refer to this quite often when I tackle the requests of my daughter.

I am quite excited to have a new project to do this summer in making these sweet dolls for a sweet girl.    With over 30 variations included in the book I know that there is something for any kind of crafter out there.  These dolls could make fun gifts for your kids and/or grandkids at birthdays or Christmas.

All good things come to an end unfortunately.   Jane Bull the doll has to fly to another destination.  I wish I would have had the time to bring her see the parliament but it just wasn’t possible.   Follow the adventures of Jane Bull on Canadian soil and her tweets by clicking on the image below.  You can also discover the various hosts she will be staying at by checking her Canadian Tour schedule and by checking out all the books written by her.

Spirit Bridge

Spirit Bridge – A Well Spring Series Novel
By James L. Rubart
Published at Thomas Nelson

About the book

The Warriors Riding have battled in astounding supernatural realms, set captives free, and awakened thousands of hearts. But now their only chance of survival depends on calling for The Spirit Bridge.

Reece, Dana, Brandon, and Marcus have achieved staggering success in the spiritual realm . . . but each is reeling from vicious attacks. They need rest. A break from the war.

But the warlord Zennon is raging and will give them no quarter. The demon holds what he believes to be the trump card—a hidden strategy set in motion before Warriors Riding even began—that will detonate the team from the inside out. And he's just set it loose.

The street magician Simon—finally free of Zennon's alternate reality prison—is racing to remember his past before his ignorance obliterates his destiny. Then there's Miyo—a brash young warrior with advanced knowledge of spiritual realities and supernatural armor even Reece doesn't know about. These two will be pivotal in the final war.

If only the Warriors knew which side Simon and Miyo are truly on. If only they knew how to fight against Zennon's final assault.

The Spirit Bridge is the epic conclusion to acclaimed author James L. Rubart's Well Spring series, which will propel each of the Warriors Riding on a quest of true identity, ultimate freedom, and a final battle that will leave them changed forever.

My Thoughts

When I saw the opportunity to review this specific title, I knew that before I can even imagine reading it I needed to catch up on the previous installment.  I had read the first book last winter after discovering the author and enjoyed numerous of his books.  However, I had not read the second book of the Well Spring series.   So I purchased the title and immediately read it.   It didn’t took me long and I didn’t waste time before jumping into Spirit Bridge.

I fell in love with the character of this series from the first book, Soul Gate.   I was hoping to get the 2nd book – Memory’s Door - on sale but I had to purchase it in order to review Spirit Bridge.  The writing of James Rubart will keep you on the edge as it will pick your curiosity as you progress in the reading.   There is adventure and challenges for the characters of this book.  The Warriors Riding will have to learn to work with new people as well as deal with the loss of a close friend in order to fight Zennon.

This book – along with the two previous titles of the series – will allow you to realize how powerful the spirit realm can be.   I find the series to be an eye opener on how the enemy can decide to attack people when they are involved in something beneficial for others.    Though the author keeps you wanting more, his writing flow so well that it isn’t a surprise when you arrive at the end of the book.

If you are interested in this book, I would strongly recommend that you read the two previous titles that are part of the series.  I find the books are linked together if you want to enjoy the whole story.  I am grateful to have discovered James Rubart books last year and hope that many more will be written in the future.   He has become one of my favorite authors since my discovery.

Spirit Bridge is available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.   However, before reading this novel I strongly recommend reading the first and second books of the series.  Below, I am offering all options for the series.
