Story of Wolverine

THE STORY OF WOLVERINE_JKT.inddStory of Wolverine – DK READER
Published at DK Canada

About the book

One of Marvel Comics’ favorite characters, Wolverine is a mutant who possesses animal-like instincts, super-enhanced strength, and the ability to heal from any wound. While he was part of the Weapon X program his skeletal structure was bonded with the near-destructible alloy adamantium, and now very little can stop him.

DK’s publishing program celebrates Wolverine’s classic comic book roots, with gorgeous imagery, classic story lines, and a nod to the franchise that Wolverine has become.

Wolverine Reader Level 4 The Origin of WolverineWolverine picks through his fractured memory to remember the Weapon X program and how he came to be the mutant hero that he is.

My Thoughts

Wolverine must look like a savage when someone doesn’t know anything about this comic character.  But deep down, he is looking for answers.  When I first encountered this character I was reading the X-Men comics that my husband had.   Since then Wolverine has invaded the big screens with his presence in numerous X-Men movies and even one about himself.  Next year, a new movie will come out in theater where Wolverine will travel to Japan to train to be a Samurai warrior.

But who is Wolverine?   This DK Reader will present you in much details who is Wolverine, how he became what he is today and what is his mutant ability.    You will also learn more about his friends and foes, how he battles and his history as a child and grown-up.   Wolverine is a unique character as you can see it in the movies (if you have watched them that is…).

If you proficient reader is passionate about comic characters and want to learn more about Wolverine, this little book would be the best place to start.    I find with children (and even with adults) that having a book that stir your interest is the best way to encourage them to read.    So when you are at your wits in figuring out how to have your child read more, look into his/her interests.   If it is comics then get some to him/her.   Be wise in what you purchase because some comics can be very graphics unfortunately but if you stick to known heroes, then you might open a door to reading for your child.  How do I know this?   My own husband learned to read because of comics and we encourage our kids to explore various type of reading material – from books to comics.

I know that some people will not agree with me in presenting a book about Wolverine.   But it is a character that has made his mark through the years in the comic book world.   His first appearance in Incredible Hulk #181 (November 1974) is now worth 1725$ if the  comic book in in near month condition.   The first official comic of Wolverine in a four part mini series is worth 75$ near mint.    This character is going to be present for numerous years I think and it’s worth knowing where he comes from and how he became the person he is today.

A Street Through Time

StreetThroughTime A Street Through Time
Published at DK Canada

About the book

In a series of fourteen intriguing illustrations, the award-winning A Street Through Time tells the story of human history by exploring a street as it evolves from 10,000 BCE to the present day.

Watch the landscape and daily lives of the street's inhabitants change, as the small settlement grows into a city, is struck by war and plague, and gains trade and industry. Throughout, children are asked to study the photos in order to find a time traveler in each scene, as well as to pick out interesting details, encouraging them to pore over the unique illustrations and more easily learn about the historical background.

My Thoughts

Have you ever wondered what a place would looked like if you could go back in time?   Take the city where I was born for example – Montreal.   Through time, it has gone through numerous changes.   It would be interesting to have the ability of going back to the 1500s and see how the Iroquoians lived back then.

Well A Street Through Time is one way to visit history and see the changes of a specific section near a river in a walk through 12000 years.  You will go through various ages and see how the people lived at specific times in history from 10000 BCE to today.   You will experience the Iron Age, the Romans, the Medieval times and much more.

The book will also highlights the life of people during that time period, give vocabulary words, allow you to explore at your own pace and follow a time traveler named Henry Hyde.   You will have the challenge to find Henry Hyde through the pages as he tries to observe without being caught.  The illustrations are packed with details and will bring history to life for whoever is looking at it.   I find this book to be very interesting because you can always find a new detail that you have missed or you can grab it anytime to explore at your own pace.

A Street Through Time is a perfect book to have to complement the history lesson you can cover at home or that your child has at school.   Now only will it give a perspective to what happened in the past but it also stimulate the reader to find details in the pages.   The author will also have another title in March 2013 called A City Through Time.

A Street Through Time is available for purchase at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca and amazon.com.

There are always lots of cool things to do in the city. But most of all, the girls just like hanging out with each other!

Both book gives more background on the universe of Lego friends.  My daughter, who is four years old, has received one Lego Friend items last year and since then she plays with Stephanie whenever her brothers are playing with Lego.   Having a selection of Lego specifically for girls is marvelous.   These two books will not only present the girls and what they like to do but it will also transport my daughter in Heartlake City to discover the place where they live.

I am slowly bringing more books more geared toward her taste and her gender.  These two books are definitively a great addition for her personal library.

The DK readers is a multilevel reading program which will enable your child to become more confident with his/her reading skill as they grow.   There are five levels in the DK readers reading program:

  • Level 1 Pre-level: This leaver is perfect for the child who is learning to read.  It contains high-frequency words, a picture word strip, a picture glossary and a simple index.   It also uses labels to introduce and reinforce the vocabulary.  Adult participation is highly recommended.
