October is the Food & Drink Boutique at DK Canada. And honestly, with Thanksgiving coming soon, I think it is the best month to promote a variety of books dedicated to food and drinks. DK Canada has numerous books that will stirrups your taste buds whether is it for your coffee obsession, wine, food from other parts of the world, food that will bring healing in your body, slow cooking, vegetables, herbs & Spices, or cake decorating.
I personally love the Step-By-Steps cooking books from DK Canada. But this time around I saw one that I knew would be useful for me – the Step-by-Step Kids’ Birthday Cakes.
This book is perfect for anyone wanting to create a special birthday cake for a child. Step-by-Step Kids' Birthday Cakes includes 50 inventive, fun, achievable projects, from rockets and trains to princesses and teddy bears with step-by-step instructions, photography highlighting tricky details, and a special section on lettering, as well as tips for using fondant, decorative media like stencils and molds. The book also includes other variants like mini cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops.
As soon as the book arrived in the house, I had some kids pretty excited and my younger ones wanted to be the first one to go through it. But it was time for homeschool so I said no and besides mommy would be the first to dig into it…. Their reactions were priceless. “Ahhhhh!” But when lunch time was done and I sat to open the book, they were surrounding me in order to see the photos and discover the book with me.
All the cake included in this book are fabulous and each have it’s own level of complexity. Already, I have some requests for upcoming birthdays. My third son wants to have the monster cake that you can see on the cover of the book – the orange one at the bottom. He also requested that there is an eye for each person invited to his birthday party. MmmmM! We will see about this. Personally, I really like the one titled Over the Rainbow, the one who looks like a fish tank and the one called Over the Moon with its aliens.
Here’s a list of the cakes you will find in this book:
- Monster Madness
- Pretty Fairies
- Up, Up, and Away
- Over the Moon
- Furry Teddy Bear
- Treasure Island
- Over the Rainbow
- Party Train
- Dinosaur Egg
- Cupcake Owl
- In the Jungle
- Soccer Mania
- Prima Ballerina
- Fish Tank Friends
- Happy Robot
- Sparkly Butterfly
- Circus Big Top
- Cupcake Caterpillar
- Princess Castle

Also included at the end of the book, you will find basic techniques like how to make sponge cakes, how to prepare a cake, how to make cake pops and cupcakes, how to make fondant, using flower paste, covering a cake and frosting a cake. You will also find other ideas on how to make different animal cakes, animal cake pops, animal cupcakes, and much more.
Essentially, this book is a great idea book to have at hand if you enjoy making fun cakes for your kids. It is packed with ideas and suggestions that will brighten the special day of your child in a very out-of-the-ordinary way. The book contains templates for you to use as well. If you are into cake decorating the book could give you new ideas.
