Book Review: What Does the Bible Say About That?

About What Does the Bible Say About That?
Most kids don’t realize it, but God’s Word has a lot to say about the things they care about. Covering more than 300 everyday topics in conversational, engaging, one-page units, 8 to 12 years old will get biblical perspective on many topics like homework, dieting, anger, sports, classmates, puberty, siblings, self-confidence, friendship, integrity, knowing God, etc.
Each page of the book what the topic has to do with the Bible, what the Bible says about it, and how the Bible’s teaching applies to the reader. Also, you will find 200 original cartoons that illustrate some of the topics.

Who is Carolyn Larsen?
Carolyn has written forty books for children and adults. She is a mother of three who combines humor and experience in writing on biblical topics. She is best known as the author of the Little Girls Bible Storybook line, which has sold 1 million units.

What do I think of What Does the Bible Say About That?
Love it. It's another wonderful book from Crossway. It’s simple and direct so that my oldest can understand the topics without problems. It gives some scriptures to relate to as well as some food for thought on each subject. There is also a prayer at the end of each topic so the child can talk to God about what he/she has just read. I can see ourselves using this as a devotional during our next school year. The topics are real for 8-12 years old and very down to earth.

While scanning the Table of Contents, I saw a topic on dancing. I was curious with what the author would write on this because our church is a church who worships God on electronic music and people don’t hesitate to dance if they want to. I was glad to see that Carolyn view of dancing is the same as ours. We don’t allow suggestive dancing as we think it is improper.
At the ages where influence from others is strong, we need to rely on God’s word to stay strong and firm. This little book will helps our kids to dig more into the Bible and to understand how it relates to today’s problems as well as how to live your life.

My only question mark regards a topic that I think should have been included in the book. When you look at the table of contents, you can see a topic about boys. Having three boys myself, I thought this is probably a topic specific for boys. I was wrong… This topic is for girls only! So I decided to check to see if there was something similar for boys under the topic Girls. Nothing. I checked a little bit more in the Table of Contents and found nothing specific for boys only… Mmmm!

So here’s what I would have written about the topic of girls.

What Does the Bible Say about Girls?
This one is for boys only. Some of you are not interested in girls whatsoever and others are starting to see them more. The feminine gender was created by God to complete the male. Girls are a beautiful creation. They can be vulnerable at times and it’s your duty as a boy to protect them and help them when it is needed.

What the Bible Says

Husbands love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Colossians 3:19

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
1 Peter 3:7

It (love) always protects, always trusts, always hopes,, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13: 7

And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man is actually loving himself when he loves his wife. No one hates his own body but lovingly cares for it, just as Christ cares for his body, which is the church.
Ephesians 5:25-29

Time to Face the Facts
Like it or not, someday you will want to get married and a woman will enter your life. But in the meantime, you need to respect the girls around you and take care of them. The girl of your life will complete you and become your companion. She and you will grown close to each other and support each other. To prepare yourself you need to learn to care and respect them. Be yourself when you talk to them and be honest. Always make sure they feel secure in your presence and that they can trust you.

Today I Will…
Thank God for girls. Make a commitment to God that you will respect the girls around you, be nice to them as well as protect them if circumstances arise.
