About the book
Destined to be toted in school backpacks everywhere, this new encyclopedia series for young readers contains on-the-spot information in children's favorite subject areas. Kids love facts: they want to know about the biggest, fastest, tallest, and oldest everything. Full of instant information, these books feature a fresh design that is sure to appeal to the middle grade audience. These single-subject guides offer a unique catalog-style presentation, which clearly lays out individual subcategories with concise and punchy text covering all of the essential information on whatever topic is at-hand.
Pocket Genius: Rocks and Minerals profiles nearly 200 types of rocks and minerals from volcanic rocks and granite to sparkling diamonds and explosive sulfur, and tells what they are made of, how they are formed and what they are used for.
My Thoughts
Do you have a child interested in rocks and minerals? This book could become his/her field book when looking for something out of the ordinary. It is perfect to include in a backpack and won’t take too much place. Even though the size of the book is small, it contains valuable information to help identify the rocks and/or minerals your child would encounter in his/her adventures.
With stunning images of various rocks and minerals and information within the tips of the fingers, your child can determine which type of rock/mineral it is and even learn fascinating facts like where it is formed, the shape when formed, the grain size, the color as well as the mineral content.
My oldest son expressed some interest in learning more about rocks and minerals when we visited the Science North a couple of years ago. There he had the opportunity to polish various rocks during an activity. Needless to say that it opened new learning possibilities for him and his siblings. Since then every time they can they would grab some rocks and observe them.
Pocket Genius books are a great way to keep on learning while travelling long distance too! Their size is perfect to control the weight issue when you are in an RV and would be perfect to have in the car. The kids can go through different subjects like dinosaurs, animals, and sharks. There are also two other titles planned for later this year – bugs and ancient Egypt. Each of these books contain limited information on the subject they cover but would be a great way to stir the interest of a child so that he/she decides to learn more about whatever animal, bugs, rocks and so on.
To keep your kids busy this summer and to help them to keep their brain active, I would recommend that you consider the Pocket Genius books from DK Canada.
The Pocket Genius Rocks and Minerals is available for purchase at your favorite bookstore, even amazon.ca.
