2010_04_29_09_32_30 About two weeks ago I’ve contacted Red Prince Apples to see if I could review their – well you guessed it – APPLE! And my request was accepted. At the end of last week, I have received a wonderful package containing 6 apples that my family had the opportunity to taste.

What is so special about the Red Prince Apple?

The Red Prince Apple was discovered in 1994 in an orchard on the German/Holland border located in the small town of Weert. The discovery was a surprised as the owners of the orchard realized that one of their trees was producing red apples in the midst of a sea of green apples. Lo and behold it was discovered that the tree was a natural crossing between two existing varieties: the Jonathan and the Golden Delicious. And in 2001, the owners of Global Fruit planted their first Red Prince trees in Ontario. Nine years, later, they are the exclusive growers in Canada and they are proudly introducing the Red Prince apples to Ontarians.

The Red Prince is a premium apple that is available 19245_272980561714_261750371714_3596938_7437630_nduring the winter months. It grows in Thornbury, Ontario. This apple is recognized for its antioxidants properties. It has also inherited the sweetness and juiciness of the Golden Delicious as well as the crispness and tanginess of the Jonathan.

How the variety grow

Ontario Red Prince apples are grown in a uniquely sustainable and innovative fashion which includes: high density orchards, eco tunnel sprayers, drip irrigation, precision planting thanks to the GPS technology as well as pre-sorting and grading technologies.

Our Thoughts

I have never heard of this kind of apple before. But not I can say that I will not forget about it. They are simply delicious. When you eat one, it will remind you of the kind of apple that I call the pear apple. The fruit is juicy and refreshing to eat. And when you bite it, you can hear the crispness of the fruit.

The kids devoured their snack the day I serve the Red Prince Apple. My two oldest ones expressed some of their thoughts to me.

Dominic, age 6 “I love it. (to this he goes on to lick his lips….)”

Alexandre, age 8 “It makes a good healthy snack. Probably good for a fruit salad as well.”

The Red Prince Apple has found a new loving family. This kind of apple is perfect for the winter time and firm enough to be able to cook with it.

Since I had not seen this variety of apple at my grocery store, I was curious to see where I could get these. I was pleased to see a store locator on their website - http://redprinceapple.ca/locator/ . This simple page will let you know where you can get this new variety of apple close to your home. It is disappointing that it is not available everywhere though.

I strongly recommend everyone to go to their closest store and get some delicious Red Prince Apple. You won’t regret it.

Now if you would excuse me, I have an apple to savor.
